Root Install roms & kernals without a computer?

I'm pretty new to this rooting thing, I rooted pretty much to just de-bloat my evo and overclock. So currently I'm just running the stock rom with a freedom kernal, and just use go launcher to customize the phone how I want it, (but this method is beginning to consumerian massive amounts of memory) So now I kinda want to try some new roms, problem is I'm at the VA hospital right now and dont have my laptop anymore cuz I got caught with it in my wall locker and I'm not supposed to have it unless I'm taking classes, and the computers I do have access to won't let me download roms or kernals (Damn government computers have to ruin all my phone tinkering fun). So my question is, is there a way I can download roms/kernals straight from my phone to the root of my sd. From what I have read, (so yes I have read and apologize if this has already been addressed elsewhere), rom manager with clockwork mod recovery can make this possible. The thing is I'm running RA recovery. Seems most people prefer the way it does back-ups. Could boot manager help me with this or is that just an app acting as recovery? In which case should I delete it and just flash roms from recovery via h-boot to save memory? I would very much appreciate the help. Thanks!

OK, please do not use rom manager for anything except downloading a rom. I wouldn't really trust it to do that either.

Yes you can download the rom or kernel directly to your phone. All you need to do is locate the appropriate download folder where they are downloaded to and either move the files to the root of the sd card (not in any folders, the "top" level) or navigate to the folder in RA and flash from there.

I just made the connection in my head, VA hospital and signed Grunt. I assume you've been hurt serving?

I just want to say thank you for your service. I completely support the troops and really appreciate what you sacrifice. My pops served in Vietnam, 1st 501st airborne, recon.

You've found the best forum on the web here, you will have all the help you need. Flaming or trolling for asking question is not tolerated here, so ask away! :)

Welcome to the forums!!!!!!!! :D :)

Granite pretty much covered it! I just wanted to chime in and say Welcome to AF!!! (A little off topic) What Branch of military are you in? I was a Navy Submariner.

I didn't know you were in the military Frenchy!

I'd have thanked you a long time ago for your service!!!!:o:)

My old man told me if I joined the service He'd disown me right quick!! He went through hell over in Vietnam, he didn't want me to get scarred like he is. I obliged. First generation in 5 to not join. :o

Sorry, I don't want to Hijack this thread. Back on Topic! :D

Use a file explorer like Astro or Estrongs to locate the download folder for your browser, then just cut them and past to the root of the SD card.
I will suggest MikG for a first rom flash, very stable and fast. Flash the freedom kernel you already have after you flash the rom, in a seperate recovery session.
IE: flash the rom, reboot and get it setup, then boot to recovery, make a nandroid backup, then flash the kernel.

Thanks guys I appreciate it such a quick reply too. So I can just download say straight from the rom and kernal sticky find the download and move to root? Or nav through RA? So clockwork isn't even needed at all? Really its that simple?
Yea an air force friend of mine that was here introduced me to the world of phone hacking and I had just got an evo (which he seemed kind jealous of, so I knew I had something good), I heard him say he uses this forum, so after he promised to root my evo, then bailed. I got to reading and watching videos and rooted it myself the day before I got caught with my computer. I'm glad I taught myself how to do it tho, so far I'm enjoying all this phone tweaking stuff. this forum has been a huge plethera of information. Thanks again guys!!!

Any time!!

Yeah once you're rooted and you have a custom recovery Clockwork mod or Rom manager isn't needed anymore.

And yes it really is that easy! :D

You've done the hard part...Rooting the phone and switching recoveries to Amon-RA.. Just make sure to follow the flashing instructions in the rooting for dummies guide in the "after rooting" section. Wipe the appropriate partitions and before you change anything at any time make a nandroid backup! ;)

I have rot explorer and file expert, I've been able to find pretty much everything I want with those , I dont foresee any problems, then again like I said I'm a noob haha. Ill let you know how it turns out.

I had an idea you were ARMY based on your screen name. Please keep us posted!

So I flashed mikG 2.6.1, everything went well... For a few seconds, then I kept getting this error saying "android.process. Acore foreclose" I think thats what it said. could this be because i accidently deleted the "com.htcprofile" file, and does anyone know if I can possibly get that back? Because if I recall correctly the nandroid didn't bring it back for some reason. I just had anidea tho. Be back in ten mins.

just go into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache and re-flash the rom. no need to wipe data. this should bring back any system files that you delete without affecting your data or setup. also you can just do a nandroid restore if you made one after flashing mikg.

Must not have made my nandroid before I deleted it. And I wiped bedore I flashed, didn't work :(

sorry i'm not sure that i understand, but you wiped dalvik cache and cache and re-flashed the rom? and it did not work? or you wiped previously before you initially flashed the rom?

either way try and wipe dalvik cache and cache in recovery and re-flash the rom. if this did not work the first time then maybe try and re-download the rom again then repeat my above recommendation.

I do it on the regular. Like others said, I would highly not recommend flashing through Rom Manager either. I do download with it. You can also download through your phone's browser and download it to the SD card. So XDA Forum links will not allow you to download through the browser because they have that QR code thingy that you scan with your barcode scanner. If you use the barcode scanner, it will download directly to your phone's SD card.

For kernels, I do it the same way. You can also get the Kernel Manager Lite from the Market that is also good. It gives all sorts of details about the kernel as well as FAQ and such. Kind of like Rom Manager. Again, I wouldn't recommend using it to flash the kernel though.

Once the ROM/kernel is downloaded, I use something like ES File Explorer, Astro, root explorer, etc. to move the ROM from its downloading place such as in a separate folder to the root of the SD card. If you are unsure, the root is the "beginning" of all of the files on your SD card. This is the first place that will be opened on ES File Explorer or Astro or your computer (not on Root Explorer though).

Once this is done, then you can load up into Recovery and flash like normal.
