Root Installed KaosGingerbread V6 ROM, BAD IDEA!!!

As the title states, i installed this rom a few days ago. The rom is complete unfinished garbage, and now i am no longer able to access my phone through my computer. I have been trying to get out of this rom for the last few days, with no luck. Here are the things i've tried:

Tried flashing a new rom via recovery, but can't scroll anywhere, it's completely stuck

Tried installing ROM Manager to flash a new room, i hit ok to reboot and NOTHING happens

Tried re-rooting my phone because i thought this may be the issue, i hit ok to reboot and NOTHING happens

Tried installing RSD lite to flash my phone back to stock, again my computer doesn't recognize my phone, yes i have USB debugging enabled.....

I think that's it but i'm sure there is something im missing. If anyone can help me get out of this rom or even back to stock, i would appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

What rom did you have before KaosGingerbread? Like the unruly Red Sox Fan :D suggested, do a nandroid backup to that rom (if you made one). Another bit of information that would be useful (besides previous rom) is what method did you use to root your phone and what recovery is installed?

I had KaosFroyo i can't remember the version. I made a backup through ROM manager........However when i go into ROM manager and try to restore it, i hit ok and nothing happens.

I used a one click Eris APP, and it says Build: RA-eris-v1.6.2 for the recovery.

Does your trackball work if not plugged in with your cord? There are problems with some phone having a cord plugged into them. If your trackball works without the cord plugged into it, it should work in recovery. Downlolad a rom thru your phones browser then move it from your download folder to the root of your sd card. Boot into recovery and see if you can go from there. Let us know.

While you are right that KaosGingerbread is rather unfinished, it's also two versions old - there is a version 8 as well.

From the KG thread at xda-developers:

V6
Rolled up to AOSP 2.3.1
Speed improvements
Working OpenGL
Fixed a stability issue with Bionic
Merged latest SU
Fixed Wifi
Fixed Bluetooth
Gapps is having an issue when rolled in currently. for now flash gapps-mdpi-20101228-signed.zip after flashing V6.

If you'd read that, you may have saved yourself some trouble. You may still be able to download that gapps package inside KG as it is with the browser - it's not a very big zip file - and, either by following the directions above to flash the Amon's Recovery listed above, or by starting Clockwork Recovery within the ROM Manager app and installing the zip from there, you may be better off.

It would have been smart to make a Nandroid backup before you tried to install KG as well, though, of course, if you cannot move the trackball, you'll have a hard time doing that unless you install the new recovery. (It does beg the question - how did you flash KG if you cannot use the trackball within Amon's Recovery?)

Anyway, I think that you have enough good ideas here:

1. Follow the instructions in the Amon's Recovery thread to install the new version. If you cannot install gscripts from the market, you may need to use Scenario 4.

2. If that's too much for you (and installing the SDK and getting adb running can be quite a chore), you say that you have ROM Manager installed, so from within ROM Manager you should be able to flash that google apps zip package from within Clockwork Recovery.

3. You may instead want to install a relatively small ROM that you can flash instead. If you can get it, you may want to install the AFV app from the market so that you can verify that the file's MD5 matches what it should, since Clockwork will try to install something that isn't signed. But Vanilla 2.0.4 is a good one; you should be able to download the zip file from the browser on the phone.

4. You could go out and buy yourself a micro SD card reader for your PC, take the SD card out of the phone, and copy files from your PC to the SD card using the reader. They actually sell these usually at Verizon Wireless stores, and Best Buy should have them as well. That way you won't have to stress over not getting connectivity from the phone to the PC for copying files over, anyway.

I have to go to work here in a few minutes but i just want to say thanks for the responses. As far as my trackball goes, it doesn't work plugged in or not. I'll have to try that tutorial posted in the link above.

And as far as everything you posted doogald, thanks. I will read through this better when i get off of work. I'm not a phone nerd by any means and have limited experience with all of this. But just saying keep the responses coming and i'll check back with this thread later tonight and frequently after that.

out of curiousity, do you know what bootloader you have? i have some other ideas that should in theory work, but ill wait and see how the above pans out before opening my mouth.

i fear that you will not be able to install the tracball optional recovery with kaos v6.it ran it a few months ago  and it was incredibly laggy and not very useable at all(not to knock kaos, its not like building a rom from AOSP code is easy.it IS an early verion).

so im a little confused on what you have on your phone,if you could clarify.
you do have rom manager? do you have the market? are you signed in to your google account so that you could possibly send apps to your phone from the online android market? do you have any backups on your sd card made with Amon_Ra,or have you always used clockwork and rom manager?

I have ROM manager. I don't have the market. It won't let me sign into my google account. I have no backups with AMON, used ROM manager.

Hope this clears things up for ya.

I am in the middle of the Custom Recovery: trackball not required and i am completely confused. I get to the part where it says: H. let it do its extracting thing...and then exit Astro File Manager. I do that and it says it extracted however big the file is. Then what?? I have no new apps on my phone and i have no idea where this GSCRIPT Lite is coming from.

Do you have the Gscript app downloaded? Are you doing senario 3? I don't know about 1-click but with the universal method you would have Gscript already. Scary's .zip opens in Gscript.

I just got a copy of the app. When i try to run the script i get stderr: Permission denied. But it doesn't have all that other junk that in the screenshot on the tutorial. Just says permission denied and that's it.
What the heck?

in order to continue we need to somehow get you a working gscript lite app.
i could prolly copy it and either add it to my drop box or email it to you.

if you got a card reader to stick your micro-sd into your pc,you could download the .apk onto your pc,transfer it to the sd card, and then use astro to find and install it.

if you dont mind re-rooting,you *could* flash the root rom to get a completely functional phone back. what doesn anyone else think about that option?

i dint know that either

Well I feel a little less stupid than normal then. I assumed he could use my method of getting a different rom on his sd card but I don't know anything about rom manager. Guess I'll stay on the porch and let the big dogs help him out of this mess.;):)

Still wish I new how to multi-post.

I do have a card reader. I found an APK for gscript lite and did exactly as you mentioned. I loaded the zip file into the program, and when i try to run the script it gives me a Permission Denied message. However i don't know that it is the latest version of Gscript....

I haven't had any luck flashing ANYTHING (can't use recovery, and ROM manager is unresponsive) so how would i go about re-rooting? Like i said before, when i initially rooted the phone i used the One click Eris App. I've tried using that again, but it doesn't work now that i'm on this new rom.

As far as the browser being tied in with GAPPs, i never flashed a GAPPS file (don't have maps, market, etc) but i still do have a working browser.

it still amazes me that people use rom manager() from now on any referecnes to rom manager by me will be followed by a "" to show my extreme displeasure of it :p ;)

if he is comfortable re-rooting,i think the easiest solution is to flash the root rom in hboot, since all hed need is a pc that downloads, and a cardreader to move the file. tracball wont need to work (i think "vol+" to update when it asks). ive been hopeing one of the big dogs(you know who you are*cough*scary,dooglad,eu1) would comment that this is an acceptable solution,or give a "no way! dont do that!" before giving further directions or links.

bc,all you gotta do is click the little multiquote button on all the ones you want to appear in your reply box. then just click new reply. automagically they will appear :D

since you asked...
go here: [HTC ROMs] Consolidated HTC Eris RUU/OTA/ROM URLs - xda-developers and download the "root rom"

scroll down untill you see: [ 2.19.605.1 ] a.k.a. "Root ROM" - (Eclair/2.1)
the download link is there. it will ahve an exact size of 107,427,740 bytes; and a MD5 signature: 63eacc5ede3b179f95dc22d8ef585f94

this is a PB00IMG file that you put on the root of your sd card, boot into hboot, and then the phone will see the file and ask if you want to update. it will then automaitcally "upgrade" to that software. when the phone comes up you will basically be back on a stock 2.1 with an S-OFF bootloader(wich can be handy in an emergency, but be careful).

at this point you can reroot with the one click app, root for dummies,or any other method you see fit. :)

in order for it to work:
1) your SD card MUST be formatted FAT32
2) you must rename the file EXACTLY "PB00IMG.zip"

take note that those are zeros, not O's,and that windows will automatically add the ".zip" so if youre using windows, just rename "PB00IMG".

if the phone does not find the file, then one of those 2 things is not right.

DISCLAIMER: im really into this stuff, but ive only been around for a couple months on the forum. i would reccomend that you wait untill one of the aforementioned big dogs replys with their opinion on doing this. if it were my phone,id do it in a heartbeat. i have in fact unrooted, rerooted, and flahsed the root rom several times. but...my eris is inactive, and i have a couple other phones i can use so turning my eris into a paperwait isnt as catastrophic as it would be for someone who that is their only phone.

You have to unzip the file first. I assume that you are talking about the file that you downloaded to install the trackball optional version of Amon's Recovery? (This is what I would do if I were you at this point.)

From your PC, copy that gscript-sa.zip file to the SD card using your card reader, and unzip it from there. It should put the script that you need into the gscript folder on the SD card. Then you load the gscript-sa.sh file into gscript lite and run that, using the instructions located here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html under Scenario 3, starting with:

Launch a new Gscript Lite instance and:

A. press the soft menu button
B. select Add script option (lower left)
C. press the Load file button
D. select the gscript-sa.sh script
E. leave the Needs SU? checkbox checked (you need root for the flash to work)
F. press the Save button (lower left)
G. you'll now be returned to the main Gscript Lite menu and you should
see gscript-sa available at the bottom of the list of scripts
H. to run the script, short-press the gscript-sa script name
I. you should be prompted by the SuperUser whitelist app to allow
the Gscript program to run the /system/bin/sh as root (select Allow)

Let's hope that you have a good SU in that build of KF.

I unzipped it through Astro File Manager just like it said. I then place the unzipped file into Gscript and it gives me the permission denied message.

It seems that my phone isn't letting me do anything, which makes me believe it's not fully rooted or rooted at all. It says it will pop up a Superuser Whitelist app if it works correctly. I have no Superuser apps in my phone.

I am about ready to do what scotty has suggested.

slikrider20,

Just to be clear, exactly when are you getting the "permission denied" message? (trying to pin-down exactly what step you are doing when the issue occurs)

Is it when you launch / run the gscript-sa script and you see the screen described in my thread preceded this text:

If you are not rooted, didn't enable the Needs SU? checkbox, or there's a problem flashing the custom recovery image, you'll see something like this:

i.e., the screen immediately before the start of the "Scenario 4" section?

Make sure you've enabled the "Need SU?" checkbox in Gscript Lite when running it (you would be seeing the behavior you are if this checkbox is not enabled or you are not truly rooted).

Let us know.

This in bold. However my screen doesn't have all that stuff that the screenshot before Scenario 4 does. It simply just says stderr: Permission denied. SU box is checked.
