"Home" icon + power clears the exclamation icon and brings you to the menu - attempting 1.5 (unrooted) to 2.1 now...
It looks like the XDA site is focusing on the same thing I am.
That's the first portion of the update-script, which I'm pretty sure is run when updating. I extracted the original .zip file, modified the update-script and re-zipped it. I got a different error than those trying with a leak.
From what I can tell, what I've bolded tells the the update to check for those two versions, and if it matches, to update. So, I'm not sure why it's not working.
It worked for me too, updating now. I peed my pants a little bit when i saw the "Deleting Files" going.
Someone over at xda just posted Home and Power got them into recovery mode. Tried it on my phone and it went past the exclamation screen to the recovery console.

This code actually does say that 2.1 should still get the update... so I think I will just sit back and be patient on this one.
I think this file is meant to run from internal memory on the phone and not from external storage. I'm betting that is why it is aborting, although I cannot explain why the OP got it to work.

Great! So can someone post the exact procedure in order to work?

Power and home worked, but it says it can't find the file on mine. Gonna have to look into this some more.
