Insurance on X. Worth it? Yes, no, opinions...

OK, I'm assuming this thread got merged with another? I thought I remember there being a mobile recovery stickied up top, can't find it in search at all any more - anyway, to my question,

I got mobile recovery to work fine, its been running ever since I installed but I got a text yesterday stating that I only have 3 days left, it stated that I'm not enrolled in equipment coverage (which I thought you HAD to be with verizon, could have been a sales ploy.. but I have insurance) - text contains options to enroll, quit, and help. Haven't done anything yet, thought I may post since everyone installed basically around the same time. Anybody else getting this?

Thanks!!!

Same here... I was searching for awhile and couldn't find it anymore.

Did anyone get a text from Mobile recovery saying they are not subscibed to the service? I got one yesterday. I thought Mobile recovery was linked to my asurion insurance. ??

Ok knowledgeable Droid X folks, I need some help. I've been dragging my feet on buying insurance and my 30 day window is gonna creep up on me if I'm not careful.

Here are the coverage plans available:
Calling Features: Total Equipment Coverage

I personally don't see a real difference between the $8/month Total coverage policy and the $6/month Asurion policy. Please enlighten me.

I normally encourage discussion and sharing of different interpretations, but in this case if we could keep it to the cold hard facts I think that would be best.

Btw the reason I started a new thread about this is because the other ones I found in AFs are extremely long and convoluted. I'm really hoping to make this one very concise. Thanks in advance guys!

I agree 100%. I mean, why pay $2/month extra for extending 1 year against defects? That is completely and utterly worthless considering you already have the Asurion insurance.

If all else fails, and your phone has a defect after 1 year of ownership (highly unlikely, most defect occur within first 90days), then either "lose it" or "accidentally water damage it"... then pay the same $90 deductible you would pay otherwise.

Wow, just saved everyone $2/month...? haha. I'm still debating the squaretrade warranty... are they still running a 30% off?

Ok, this is a bit frustrating. I signed up for Mobile Recovery a few days ago, and a couple days later received a text message that the service would expire because I didn't have TEC. Since I only signed up for TEC on 8/13, I figured the timing might be off, and ignored the message.
This morning I received a text message saying the Mobile Recovery service was discontinued, since I don't have TEC.

Called VZW, they confirmed I have TEC effective 8/13. Transferred me to Asurion. Asurion confirmed what Verizon saw, and said there should be no reason why my Mobile Recovery was disabled. Said to uninstall and reinstall. So I uninstalled. And now I can't reinstall since the link just says "Download Coming Soon".

Lovely. Well, hopefully they will fix it quickly.

And yes, I think this thread was merged at some point. Had some trouble finding it because I was searching for Mobile Recovery in titles only.

I got the insurance for two reasons.

1) I use my personal phone for work. My company reimburses me an amount that exceeds what it actually costs me every month for DX. It pretty much pays for 1/2 of my family plan (4 phones). So, since I am not really footing the bill myself, it was a no-brainer.

2) One of the requirements in place for my company to let us use personal phones in lieu of being issued a company phone is that you must have the means to replace it within 48 hours if it is lost/stolen or broken. Now, I have like 2 or 3 of our old Verizon phones that I could reactivate in a pinch if needed. Which, I will probably do during the time it takes me to get a replacement phone, should I need one.

Yes, I've got insurance on my X. It's called the Droid 1 plan. If I break my X I'll reactivate my Droid 1. :) I'm getting a new phone every year so I think insurance is a waste of $$$$.

i got the $1.99 extended warranty, does that make any sense? i've never had a phone die on me, well except one i left in my pocket when i put the cloth is the laundry. not something i'd do with my droid.

Go and get the insurance. Im glad that I did. My screen became defective 2 weeks later after I bought it. It had white banding. I am now waiting for my replacement :D

I have been through numerous blackberries and assorted other phones and have never broke one. I always ask myself if I should get insurance when I get a new phone but when one looks at it I would of spent well over 600 dollars on insurance by now so it's a wash. Might as well keep trucking without it.

You have a month to return your phone bro. You didn't need insurance for that. Also, I'm not sure of motorolas, but I know blackberries have a manufacturer warranty for that stuff. I think it's 6 months and I would imagine most others are the same. These 600 dollar phones makes you think about it hard but the fact of the matter is the insurance is there for them to make money. Odds are good that the average person will come ahead in the long run by never purchasing insurance at all.

Manufacturer's warranty is 1 year...
i am also waiting on my replacement after i had the same banding problems on 3/4 of the screen. make sure you get a new phone instead of a remanufactured one. i called to check on my order a few days after it was placed for the replacement and found out the d-bag rep i spoke with the first time put in for a refurb. (i was hot)... luckily the second rep fixed that problem, but now im still waiting for my phone and it's week 2...

I never like linking away from AFs, but I sure as hell am not about to retype the stuff I just found here:

I went with squaretrade instead of VW and Asurion

There is a ton of good info about SquareTrade (alternative to Asurion). I am seriously considering going with ST after reading all of that.... I suggest reading page 2 and 3 in particular.

I just got three DX's for myself and kids. I couldn't stomach paying so much per month through Verizon but realized I had $1800 worth of new phones (retail) so I wanted to do something.

I checked with my homeowners insurance guy and he checked and said it would be about $18 a year per phone. It would cover everything with a $100 deductible per phone. That sounded decent so I said yes. I just got the bill and the rider only added $26.99 to my policy for all three phones. Can't beat that.

Check with your current homeowners or renters insurance company and see if you can get a rider like you do for jewelry or computers.

There is quite a bit of controversy about using a homeowners rider. I would definitely check whether or not claims on that rider get filed under your homeowners claims experience (you don't want experience... the less claims you've made, the less money you'll pay for insurance in the future): I would be willing to bet that they do. Also, I'd check on whether or not exercising the rider will effect your homeowners insurance premiums. If there are no adverse effects then great, but I'd be very skeptical.

Anyway, I'm not a homeowner so this isn't even a option/concern for me.

I have all my "stuff" on my homeowners. Boats, snowmobiles, trailers, etc. I had a storm destroy the canopy on my boat lift and they covered it with no change to my homeowners. Check with your agent. Just my 2 cents.

Did anybody get a text from mobile recovery today? saying something like "Thanks for using the Mobile recovery beta, please delete app from your phone."

Beta??

Yes. Exactly. And VZN and Asurion will be hearing from me. No notice anywhere about this being beta or I need new reading glasses.

Yes its worth it. Like with anything in life, u never know what might happen. In my case it came in handy real fast...

I would use a company that covers lost and stolen also. Thats one reason I'm still with Asurion for now. Between 2008 and 2009, I lost my phone twice and had it stolen once.

I rarely lose things: keys, money, etc. But that year was crazy..lol

Asurion only covers 2 claims in a 12 month period. (I got the phone in May or June 2008 and by Jan or Feb 2009 lost 2, 1 was stolen) Verizon hooked me up tho with a NE2 discount on a new phone. (Verizon CS ftw)

Its possible it wont happen like that again years from now,, if ever, but having that relief knowing I'm covered is good if it does.

Storm damage is considered an Act of God and in general, does not count as a claim or "experience" for your Homeowner's policy. While possible, hard to imagine many instances where damaging, losing, etc. your cell phone would fall under the same category.

For those of you depending on your homeowners policy to provide full coverage for your phone, be aware that even when your policy specifies that phones/electronic equipment/computer equipment/whatever is covered, the loss must be caused by a covered peril under your policy. Water damage, except under very specific conditions, is not a covered peril under most policies. Having it on your homeowners policy may give you some protection, but it does not offer the same level of protection as the plans offered by many carriers. Yes, it's cheaper, but before you drop your carrier insurance, READ YOUR POLICY. It doesn't matter what your agent tells you...they aren't the ones who are going to adjust your claim, they only sell you the policy. What matters is what your policy says.

The excerpt below is taken directly from the Covered Perils in the HO0003 (4/91) - which is the standard homeowners form. Unless you have an endorsement amending the covered perils of loss, specifically water damage, you do not have coverage under your homeowners policy if your phone gets wet. And, since water damage is probably in the top 3 reasons people need to replace their phones, this can be a big deal...it is for me, having had my phone replaced recently through Asurion due to water damage from a leaking cup of melting ice sitting too close to my phone.

Accidental discharge or overflow of water or steam from within a plumbing, heating, air conditioning or automatic fire protective sprinkler system or from within a household appliance.
This peril does not include loss:
a. To the system or appliance from which the water or steam escaped;
b. Caused by or resulting from freezing except as provided in the peril of freezing below; or
c. On the "residence premises" caused by accidental discharge or overflow which occurs off the "residence premises." In this peril, a plumbing system does not include a sump, sump pump or related equipment.
