Can someone explain what rooting is to me..what will it do for my phone..does it help performance..why would i want it??things like tyat..nthanks.

Rooting is taking control of your phone from Sprint. Its basically giving yourself admin rights just like you have on your personal computer.

Once you are rooted you have the freedom of changing the Rom and using powerful applications that wouldnt be available to you other wise. Applications like "wireless tether" that give you the ability to make your phone a wifi hotspot for free. The same hotspot that sprint wants to charge you $30 dollars a month for.

And before you ask, a Rom is kind of like an operating system... Some Roms are optimized for speed & performance and some give extra options not found in the stock rom your phone came with.

Another benefit to rooting is it gives you the option to customize the look of your phone with themes and modifications.

I know what a rom is...I was asking about it because i thought it was along the lines of a jailbreak for an ipod which is what i did with mine and i was right..Its along the same lines as that..I dont need a hotspot so i think i'm fine with the way it is.

Jailbreak and ROOTing are basically the same. It's just called different things.
You know how Apple users are ^_~

One thing i failed to mention is when you are rooted you can delete the bloatware that sprint wouldnt let you delete before.

Another thing you can do with root is make Nandroid back ups that saves the current state of your phone exactly the way it is so that if you ever mess up your phone you can bring it back to the way it was when it was working correctly.

You can also use apps like Titanium Backup that backs up all your apps and data so that you can switch between roms with out having to start from scratch.

if you have any more questions or if you decide you want to root later, the 2 threads at the top of this board should answer just about any questions you have on root.

im not sure if you have a "Reasons to root" section in your guide but if you dont it might be a nice addition... anyway keep up the good work :)

Can anyone tell me what the benefits are of rooting ur phone and what kind of damage to ur phone is possible from trying to root. This is my first Android phone. It's a HTC EVO and I having fun with it but its kind of complicated too. Just wanna let Yall know I'm kind of a dummy when I t comes to androids.

Welcome to the forums! First I would read through the Rooting for Dummies sticky at the top of the forum. It has alot of info about rooting and what it does. As far as the benefits, some do it for free wifi tethering and to delete the Sprint Bloatware. Others do it because it allows you to customize your phone way beyond what Sprint wants to allow us to do. It does void the warranty on your phone if Sprint finds out, but is easily reversible if you have problems with it.

We are here to help, so if you have specific questions or run into issues feel free to ask.

...and yes rooting can drastically improve performance and battery. it also gets you custom modifications and optimizations that you cant get from the market and its free.

the developers are highly skilled and awesome!
