Interesting Spider Myths

Spider Myths: Home

I just thought that site was very interesting and learned quite a lot actually. Some myths that I thought to believe:

- daddy long legs as venomous but couldn't bite through human flesh
- articles regarding camel spiders
- spiders coming up from the drains (I established this when I was younger and would always be freaked out seeing a spider in the tub)

I also learned that "poisonous" and "venomous" are actually two contrasting things. A spider can be venomous while a mushroom can be poisonous.

Oh no here we go again the answer is 9!!!!! ;)

Oh wait, spiders, eh ew. Actually camel spiders are pretty freaky looking -- but I'll be forever scarred by that picture of a soldier in iraq holding one that distorted the size of it.

lol yes the answer is still 9 :p

I remember seeing that photo a long time ago. It's really amazing how much the size will change just by the angle of the picture. The spiders look huge in that photo. I like how he says that it's always a "friend" of that person. One of my friend's husbands is a soldier and he actually said that his "friend" saw one of those in his bed. It's great that he pointed out that's how urban legends work.

Tried to go through some of these myths but apparently my fear of spiders is worse than I though, way too many pictures couldn't get through more than a few pages. from what i read lots of interesting info

This guy (well not this exact one but one of these and this same size) was suspended between two trees in my yard today. Sry, he had to go.

When I was young I was walking in the woods one night and walked into a web with one of these in it. Was never quite the same. Venomous or not, some people don't like spiders.

One thing about spiders is that they have no interest in people. Not even those that people think are hiding and lurking somewhere to come out and get you in the night or whatever (brown recluse, black widow, etc).

They want insects and other spiders to eat. There are a few that do hunt small animals, but I think that most of them are in Australia, Tasmania and perhaps parts of South America.

But people are not of interest to them at all.

That doesn't guarantee they wont bite you if you come across them.

Tell that to the guy who just died from 19 Black Widow bites.
Did you see that freaky article about the 40yr old guy who just died from 19 Black Widow Bites? It was all over the news.

That one seemed to love flesh :(

Ok, I have arachnophobia.....I'll be honest.

Do you actually like spiders ?

Ewww...banana spiders.

It's well documented that I have a fear of all bugs, spiders especially (I said bug, not insect, don't judge me!). One day my mother came in from the porch and was like "You got to see the size of this spider out here it's this big!", motioning her hands apart in a slightly unbelievable range. I wouldn't go outside, but I could see it through the window, my god, she wasn't kidding. Those things are enormous!

Another lil known fact about spiders, they all speak with Mexican East LA accents and carry switch blades. "I'll gutch you, homes!"

Camel spiders are in fact the most evil creations ever. They will not die no matter how many times you step on them and they will chase you until they are 100% sure that you will never try and mess with them again. Oh and they always hide in your boots.

Actually the daddy long legs is the most venomous spider in the world.

Didn't know this:
Not all arachnids are spiders.

...investigators have found no oil-secreting glands opening on spider tarsi (end segments of legs). One unique feature web-making spiders do have on their tarsi is a third claw opposable to certain specialized bristles, enabling them to grasp individual threads. No insect has more than two tarsal claws per leg, and most are helpless in a web.
I thought it was because they walked on 'non sticky' part of the web, lol.

They bite when they sense a threat, even if it's just a person putting a shoe on with them in it.. not an intentional threat, but a perceived threat to the spider's life, so it will instinctively thrash and bite.

Its venom is there for digestion of its prey.. not to terrorize people. That's my only point. They were here long before humans and they'll probably be here long after.

Do I like spiders? Probably more than the average person. But I have friends who like snakes, ferrets and even Republicans. Now that's gross. ;)

If you are bitten by a radio active spider, apparently you do not suddenly gain super strength, develop a sixth sense or have the ability to cling to surfaces.
