Help Intermittent SMS alerts

markus316

Lurker
hi,

I put an update on my Desire HD at the end of last week and now my SMS alerts are very intermittent.

i can at one point get a text and the message tone will ring and the green light flash along with the alert showing on the home screen but then the next time nothing comes up and i dont know i have a new message until i go into my inbox and notice i have an unread text!!

this gets annoying as now i have to constantly go to my inbox to see if i have new messages.

Any help would be appreciated on this please.... it has been since my update

Hey guys, exact same problem here, tells you have a message then dosnt tell you, and also the notification hangs in the bar at the top till you click it, even if youv already read the message.

This started right after the last update, pretty annoying, does android support read the forums or would we need to report as a bug?

Same here.

WHAT IS WITH THESE UPDATES. Apologies for the caps, but this is really starting to grate at me. The amount of problems that have come with the most recent update is un-real!

Same here! And plus, I have another problem. I live in Croatia but I was in Sweden for the new years eve holiday. There I downloaded the update. The phone worked wonders before the update. Since then, I have the problem of the intermittent SMS notifications and on my weather widget it keeps saying that I'm still in Stockholm altough GPS works perfectly in Locations and Maps. And when I open the Google site it's always in swedish and I can't change that. Is it possible to delete the last update???

Not sure if you can delete updates, dont think ya can, but i could be wrong, do you also notice the problem with txt messages being in the wrong order, say you reply to someone in the same minute they message you, your message will go up above theirs like as if it was before theirs, i notice it doing that also, i got two messages at same time from one person and i replyd, and my message went above them cause i replyd on the spot...if you wait till the next minute it dosnt do it, its like the message list dosnt record seconds...lol

I haven't noticed that honestly. But today I noticed what is probably causing the problem. If you are communicating with one person it works fine, but as soon as another person sends an SMS then the notification doesn't work. If you reply to the second person then the notification from the first one does not work. Sounds confusing, but it seems like the phone aknowledges only the ongoing thread while ignoring all others. If you reply to someone else or only send a message to someone else then the system "updates" itself and considers this as the ongoing thread therefore stopping the one before. It sounds confusing but I really don't know how to explain it differently.

Maybe so, ill watch out for that, you could be right i think actually, ill keep an eye out for it, there doesnt seem to be any support staff here on the forum i thought there would be more help or information here but its not looking good :(

I've got the same intermittent SMS notification issue, but it happens on just one thread as well.

I installed Handcent and seems to have solved the problem. I will wait and see before definitely calling victory :)

Handcent looks like iPhone -> notgun

my girlfriend bought a htc desire hd last week aswell and she has the same problem as myself and the rest of the people who posted here.

theres not very much help on the forum about this issue at all is there? i thought there would be a much better responce from people =( is this not the main android support forums?

Until HTC fix this issue, I'd suggest installing SMS Popup from the Market. It's free and is intended to provide advanced SMS notifications, but is just as useful as a simple replacement for the current Android/HTC notification system.

You need to launch People, go into settings and disable notifications, then activate them on the SMS Popup app you've installed. It seems to work very well and means that, if you're happy with the People app, you don't have to switch to using a different text application.

I am getting the same issue but have not worked out a way of resolving this yet. It does seem to have started since the update last week.

Ive had all the sms problems discussed in this thread since doing the update. In fact immediately after the update, for some reason it re sent all the previous days text messages to people, which was stramge and annoying.

Also, since the update ive got the little green dot on some message threads but ive got no unread messages in any of them. Really annoying that its telling me ive got new texts to read but i havent.

I have the same problem. On Jan. 14, I opened a ticket through the HTC Support on their website and, sadly, this has been the latest reply I've gotten (Feb. 7):

"Thank you for your email. Our development team our still working on a fix. We it is finished I dasly do not know. Hope it is very soon. If you do not want to wait for the fix one can always contact your retailer to have the phone sent for repair. It can some times be quicker but they do a factory reset so would recomedn to back up all importat data first. very sorry that I do not have a date when the fix will be out."

Other than some typos here and there, we basically have to wait... I am not very keen on the idea of installing a non-native applications for something so FUNDAMENTAL as receiving a text message. Maybe everyone who has this problem, should open a ticket and harass them a little bit, so there's some reaction (HTC - Support - Customer Service - Support via e-Mail).

But if any one of you has had any news regarding this, please do share them. I am starting to become frustrated because of this.

Just came on here to post a new thread about it, glad im not the only one getting these problems.

The message app is driving me up the ****ing wall!! I love this phone but this is really poor from HTC. I don't know when i get a text message since nothing comes up in the notifications. Every once in a while i do get a notification for a text but most of the time i have no idea.

I also get a force close error when trying to view my drafts folder. What the hell? Therefore i cannot see any of my drafts.

Even when i do go into the message app and realise that i have a new message it will not come to the top so i have to go scrolling around and search for this unread message. Even if it was only sent to me an hour or two ago. Bloody annoying. I'm going to call up HTC support if it carries on. This is a key thing for a phone fgs.

Why have tech blogs not picked this up either? A phone that can't handle receiving messages properly.. should give HTC a push, they don't seem too bothered.

I ended up installing Handcent......very happy with it. I didn't want to use a third party message app but was forced to really. I'd recommend it for now until a fix goes in. I did email HTC as well but the same 'generic' response came back.
Handcent has nice custom settings. Hang in there I guess

Just install SMS Popup as noted above, it sorts the problem and you don't have to install an 3rd Party message app.

I can only echo this. Even without the bug, I would recommend SMS Popup anyway, as the ability to quickly read a text without having to go into messages and open the thread, is something thats sadly lacking from the stock message app.

I've been using SMS go app but might try the SMS popup app. I'm shocked the HTC have done nothing. At best i hope they have fixed this in Gingerbread.

I didn't realise this was such a problem..I was all ready to get in touch with GiffGaff (O2 network) and complain.

I've had sent SMS' take forever to reach the recipient, and received messages come hours later. Wishing I didn't update to 2.2.1!!

Just had an argument on the phone with HTC Support (0845 890 0079 - please phone to complain about your issues too - the more complaints they get the faster those tech guys are gonna work). They told me that they didnt have any update and that they couldn't say when it was going to be fixed.

I said this was ridiculous that the tech team could not give a reasonable estimate for when they were going to fix this, especially after working on this for so long already. How can anyone work on something for months and still not know how long its going to take to completion?!

1. This is a basic function of any phone that is the most used of any function by far. For that reason alone this should be a top priority for HTC
2. No company I have ever worked for has ever allowed me to work on a project or task without me telling them how long it was going to take me to complete it. Similarly, There is no way that HTC bosses would be happy for tech guys to work on this problem without giving a realistic estimate for time to completion. These date estimates need to be fed back to customers immediately.

Please contact HTC and tell them that this customer service is not acceptable. We want a fix for this immediately. We want information. We do not want to be fobbed off any more.

By the way, I spoke to a low level support bod, and then asked to speak to a manager. He said he would raise the issue as urgent. He also said he would contact the tech team and he would feed back updates to me. I will chase him tomorrow if he does not call me back. Will post updates here.

Cheers

Stuart
