Root Internal Memory - Any suggestions?

Hi All
I know this is a popular topic so apologies for the new thread.

I am showing only 5MB of internal storage on my HTC Desire, I only have a handful of Apps, most of which I've moved to the SD card, I've deleted all my photos and videos but I still haven't gained any more space.

I followed the instructions on other Forums and managed to Root my phone but I am totally clueless as to how this has helped or what i've actually managed to do. I'm a total phone novice and to be honest about 90% of the topics and suggestions on here mean nothing to me. I've read some of the faq's about memory but really don't understand them.

Is there anything I can do step by step to clear some of the memory. My contract is not up for renewal for another year and at the moment my phone is pretty limited, I can't update anything or download any more Apps, surely this isn't right? I have an 8GB SD card which is virtually empty.

If you've read this far then thanks very much - any help will be really appreciated.

Hi All
I followed the instructions on other Forums and managed to Root my phone but I am totally clueless as to how this has helped or what i've actually managed to do.

Rooting has unlocked the potential for your phone. No more, no less. Keep reading the FAQs & asking questions when you have. I would suggest you think about partitioning your sd card with Gparted & installing a ROM that supports this as there is the least potential for anything to go wrong.

Hi
SuRoot - I did read your original reply in the other Forum and looked at the Root Memory FAQ, unfortunately as I've said above I just didn't understand it, it didn't make any sense to me, I don't know what most of the terminology is so that's why I posted on here to see if anyone could give me some really simple advice I could follow.

Tyseyh - Deleting pictures etc won't free up internal memory either. Thanks I know that now, any ideas what will????

Nicka3200 - Thanks for your reply, I think I'm just a little out of my depth even being on this forum, it seems to be for people who have a good knowledge of all things phones. You wrote :partitioning your sd card with Gparted & installing a ROM that supports this as there is the least potential for anything to go wrong. I have no idea what partitioning my SD card, Gparted and ROM's are???

Thanks again all of you for attempting to help but I'll try and find a 'Dummies Guide' somewhere - failing that i'll wait til next year and get a new phone! What I don't understand is how a supposed 'Smart Phone' with a completely empty 8GB SD card in can be full!!

Thanks again all, have a great day!

Ok, it seems you need to start with the "Rooting faq" before the "root memory faq" then. It explains all the other things you dont yet know.

Both the faq's assume no prior knowledge, so its just a case of reading and re-reading them until it sinks in...

I too had no knowledge of any of the terminology our techniques used until I read the guides Suroot refers to again & again & again. It took me a year to pluck up the courage to even root my phone. If you keep reading the guides it will sink in eventually. I found reading about the issues people had on these forums & how they were resolved (invariably with Suroot's help) helped me gain enough knowledge & confidence to have a go at flashing a ROM & partitioning an sd.

Hang on in there.

Agreed, there are many users on here that have helped hundreds of people sort their phones out. The problem is we all have different levels of understanding, and need different levels of help. Not against reading the guides at all, but when the terminology doesn't make sense you know that person is going to need a little more help. It's a bit like driving a car - you can read about it all you want, but there is no substitute for time behind the wheel. I think what goes on here and XDA is a bit like that - things become clearer and mean more once you go through the process, though I fully understand why people say read the guides as all the info is there.

From the initial post it would seem that alsealey is just one of those users who will need their hand holding a little more than others. But that is the good thing about this site. I knew nothing about flashing roms to my phone when I got it a year ago. Now I am s-off, memory repartitioned running a custom rom with all the apps I want and still 80mb of free memory left. And it was thanks to people such as SUroot, Hadron, Rastaman FB and others that I got where I am today.

I am really pleased with my Desire now. It takes a bit of work to get there, but it's a cracking little phone once you overcome the shortcomings of the device.

Hi - I am a new member too and I was in the same position not that long ago. I knew nothing but I am now rooted and running a custom ROM with all of my apps on a partitioned SD card. After an awful lot of reading, I am incredibly happy with the result because I now have the phone that I had always imagined. Here is what helped me.

The first thing I tried, which was the easiest, was to follow the "Guide to move most apps to the SD card" in the tips and tricks section. http://androidforums.com/desire-tip...ore-most-apps-sd-without-root-simplified.html This method was satisfactory for a long time for me and could work for you too if you still don't have many apps.

If you want to be more adventurous because you are rooted, you could try installing a new ROM that allows all apps to be installed on an SD card. (I really like the simplicity of Teppic74's ROM and A2SD+ from the XDA forums [ROM] [20/08] Pre-rooted Stock Gingerbread (3.14.405.1) [Optional Mods] - xda-developers.) Installing a ROM is more straighforward that you would think if you follow the guides, but partitioning an SD card for the first time required quite a bit of research because it was my first adventure into Linux. TechCredo | Tutorial: How to partition your Android?s SD card for A2SD+ with GParted on a Windows PC (EXT2/3/4). (Edit: The usual recommended downloadable partitioning software did not work for me for some reason.)

Good luck - it is worth the effort!

Internal memory is only gained / lost by apps, messages /emails Application Data.
That kind of stuff.

Not by music, pictures, videos
They are all on the sd card.
