Root Internal Memory Full

I have an unbranded Desire (GSM) which I rooted after a couple of weeks of having it. That was last July and I have been through various ROMs since then include Sense and AOSP versions. Late last year I settled on Defrost and then moved onto GingerVillain, which I still use. As far as I can tell it's basically CM7 with Darktremor's A2SD a few other additions like OTA updates.

As of last week I also have S-OFF via AlphaRev.

I am not an expert on all of this stuff but I work in (Windows) development so I consdier myself pretty competent, and I try to keep up with what is happeneing on XDA and similar.

Now, to my actual issue: I am running out of space.

I currently have 15MB left on internal storage and I'm not able to install more apps. I have a fair few things installed, certainly more than I could ever get on stock, but it doesn't feel like I have a ridiculous number, I only keep things that I use. I've verified using Quick System Info that my A2SD is working and ext partition shows as 369MB free out of 458MB, which is actually a bit strange since it should be 512MB? But regardless, there doesn't seem to be an issue there.

If I wipe my Dalvik cache I get up to around 50MB free in internal but after a week or so this will have disappeared again, presumably as I use my various apps.

Is it normal to have Dalvik fill up the entire internal memory? Or is there something else at work here, like perhaps some of my apps are on there as well? I could use Dalvik2SD but I feel like there is something else going on here, I don't think I would have 150MB of Dalvik?

I've also heard that a lot of people don't bother with Darktremor's A2SD any more and just use the standard Gingerbread version. Is there an advantage to doing that?

Lots of questions I guess, just looking for some advice on what is happeneing here and how I can improve it.

Thanks for any help offered!

Hey I know it doesnt really help, but I have the exact same problem... im using RCMixS ROM. I also have clear space in my ext4 parition but it still has low memory. In addition what I'm finding is that even after uninstalling apps, with adequate space, soon enough even after not installing other apps and reboot that it will go back to low memory.

Any advice would be appreciated

Actually, Dark Tremor doesn't automatically move Dalvik-Cache to SD-ext as older a2sd scripts do.

Open a terminal emulator (if you havent got one, titanium backup some apps and uninstall them to make space).

Achive root access in term:

Code:
su

Then type the following command:

Code:
a2sd cachesd

This should run the script to move Dalvik-Cache to sd-ext, reboot the desire and you should hopefully find more space.

I realise that Dalvik Cache was on internal (hence why I tried clearing it but as you'd expect, it gradually comes back). Just moved it to ext via TE, now have 100MB free which seems fine, will have to see how it goes over the next week or so.

Does running with Dalvik on ext have any performance implications?

Thanks.

Apparently it has but its negligible. I never noticed any

Me neither, phone is rapid! Had a play on a mate Moto Defy, god it slow!!!
Next option (seeing as your S-OFF) would be a custom partition. I now have well over 200mb free QSI reports All apps at 130

Hey is it possible for me to do this too? Im running RCMix S Rom version 2.0 A2SD+ version with Hboot (not CM7) and S-ON. I have an EXT4 partition as well

I desperatly need more space :S

Txs SU Root. I download Android Terminator Emulator from Market. Ran the commands as you mentioned. SU is fine. a2sd cachesd do not work it gave an error message saying a2sd not available.
Do you recommend any terminal emulator?

I'm running RCMIXHD v2.0. With about 40 apps, internal memory is running at 30 MB. Likely to run out of memory soon.

Thanks Hadron. I read on a forum that for RCMIX v2.0, one needs to run MCRs Script. There's a script to move Dalvik from internal to SD. When I ran the script, an error message came up saying that a file already exists. Does that mean Dalvik is already on my SD?

If yes, then, what's using my internal memory?

you should ask the rom dev
were good here at resolving faults we are familiar with but that zip sounds rom specific

Turns out that Dalvik was already on my SD. To solve the low internal memory issue, this is what I did to install RCMix S v2.0 CM7. Hopefully, it will help someone in a similar situation. Credits to RCMIX FAQ. I found it too convoluted. I started out rooted using Unrevoked, S-On. Internal memory 37MB. According to Titanium pro there were 64 user apps.

1. Backed up using Titanium Pro, then Clockword Mod 2.5.0.7
2. Copied http://ftp.bestblog.de/DesireS/gingerbread/RCMixS_v2.0_A2SD_CM7Hboot.zip to SD card root directory
3. S-Off using http://revolutionary.io/revolutionary-0.4pre4.zip
4. Using Android Flasher flashed http://alpharev.nl/bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img
5. Go into Recovery mode
6. Cleared Dalvik cache, deleted user data
7. Installed http://ftp.bestblog.de/DesireS/gingerbread/RCMixS_v2.0_A2SD_CM7Hboot.zip from Recovery mode. Allow about 20 minutes
8. After system restarted I ended up with 67MB of internal memory. The system is very responsive and noticeably faster!
9. Using MCR Script which is included in the pack run the move Dalvik to SD script
10.Reboot. Allow 20 minutes for system to rebuild Dalvik.
11.Once system has started up, restore system settings and apps data using Titanium pro. Now system shows 196MB internal memory. System still responsive.

I experienced an error message with Gmail. Received an error message unexpected system close. To fix this:
1. Settings
2. Applications
3. Manage Applications
4. All
5. Gmail, Clear data
6. Resynch

Overall, very happy with RCMIX v2.0 CM7 and recommend it.
