Root internal mounting problems

top_up

Newbie
hi!
great site that has been very helpful rooting my prevails and a couple proscan/curtis tablets.

here is what's going on with my daily prevail.
16gig class4 sd...then i tried a brand new 16 gig class10..no difference.

odin rooted and i have ran megatron and ct3.80 in the past with no problems.(that i was aware of)
tried to installed honeybread a couple days ago and on reboot i either get samsung/honeybread over and over or straight to honeybread theme and then it stops.
below is what running logs in recovery shows.

187MOD

formatting phone to ext4...has a grey line through it when install is finished.
show log..
install from sd card complete.
mount: mounting /dev/block/st114
iled: invalid argument
w: failed to mount /dev/block/st1
ts)

ct3.80 mod installs and works but shows below in logs.

mount: mounting /dev/block/st114
iled: invalid argument
w: failed to mount /dev/block/st1
ts)

i have a spare prevail that is not activated and i have installed the above roms and i get no errors and have no problems, so can i assume there is an internal problem with my daily prevail?
i did a backup on my spare with honeybread and then swapped cards and did a restore on my daily phone..rebooted and it locked up on honeybread theme just like doing a fresh install has in the past.

thanks for any recommendations or advice.

hey a familiar name..
yeah odin is a life saver for sure.
phone works but i can't seem to get extra internal memory or load honeybread.
i have ctmod 3.80 on it right now...just trying to find out what i did to make the phone not write ext4.
i'm kind of a tap/swipe/click before understanding person so i assume the problem i'm having was caused by myself.
i have odin rooted several times in the last couple days but end up with the same errors and lock up with honeybread.
would a factory stock restore help?
i was going to try it but didn't know if the SPHM820.ops file was the same for stock and rooted loads.
i know the tars are different.
thanks for the reply biker

Just remember, NOT all sd-cards play well with the Prevail...... some work just fine, others won't work, even if these sd-cards work fine on computers, cameras, MP3 Players, etc.....

Never could figure it out, why some sd-cards not work, but that's just the case....

My tip : Just try another brand/typ of sd-card !

Excellent suggestion. I've never had any issues with sd cards but a lot of members in here have.

thanks guys but i just installed a brand new 16 gig class 10 sandisk.
my old 16 gig class 4 sandisk did the same thing.
i noticed when coping files to the class 10 it was twice as fast but i'm sure it's because of the higher class rating.
i'm just stumped at having 2 identical phones both on ff19 ect..
one is activated and wont write the honeybread rom and the other inactivated does.
is there anything in recovery i can't change or do on my activated phone to maybe fix the internal partitions?
at this point i'm thinking it is not a sd card issue but something i did to the phone over the last few months.
thanks for the advice and i may have to pull the micro sd out of my tablet and try it just to reassure myself.

i just got CTMOD 3.80 set up to use daily and then i did a back up.
tried honeybread again with same results and then i did a restore of CTMOD.
below is the last 4 lines of the restore.
maybe someone will know what it means or what i have missing or messed up.

restore cache...
sd-ext.img not found. skipping r
-ext.
restore complete!

thanks

Welcome to the forums!
Looks like it has to do with the sd-card. You may have formatted it wrong or it didn't take. From the posts above it looks like you were having sd-card problems and that is what you have now by what it says. Did you make any partitions on it?? That is what the problem looks like.

Good Call Cwhatever. :)

Top_up..... save anything you do not want to lose and reformat your sd card with your custom recovery.

hey guys....thanks for the reply's!
ok the old card i partitioned to 1024 and 0?
the new card i just assumed honeybread would partition it.
what i'm not sure about is the old card has the HB rom zip and also the backup of HB on it.
the extra phone loads and works great but when i install the card in my daily phone it locks up or loops after install and reboot.
if the old card wasn't partitioned right would it still work in one phone but not the other?
i did odin back to a full stock rom late last night but i haven't started over yet..
i have read a lot...that's why i haven't posted sense i joined, i was able to work through install's/problems and such just from researching on your great site.
if you could point me to a partitioning thread that i need to use for HB rom i would really appreciate it.
not looking for spoon feeding but maybe just send me in the right direction.
thanks again...

Well you've been talking to some of the best I know. If you've Odined back to stock the next step would be recovery. I do believe Odin's again going to be to way to go! Welcome and thanks for saying hi XD! If you need anything I've had this phone for years and have several themes out (that all need serous updates) for it too. Wet and CM are good friends and vice is just as awesome! Thanks guys BTW lol.. go ahead and shoot me a pm if you have any more problems...

P.s. unless skater187 updated the rom without my knowing I don't believe so. The partitions need to be universal between roms. Ill ask Skater if anyone else has had these problems.

Ok. In recovery, select mounts and select format sdext and paste the results here. (this will tell me if your sdcard is partitioned or not)

EDIT -
the new card i just assumed honeybread would partition it.
This leads me to believe your card isn't partitioned. If the rom partitioned your card that would be a DISASTER (since partitioning the card ERASES EVERYTHING  )

BUT your error was for dev/block/stl14 (which is either the internal data partition or the system partition... It's been to long... I don't remember :o ) which doesn't have anything to do with the sdcard.

make sure you have a backup and then in recovery, format /system and /data and paste the outputs here.
____________
Also, are you flashing a kernel with the rom or just using the one that comes with it?

man i got all the big boys helping...to cool :)
ok i odin root and did a 1024 0 partition.
then i installed the HB zip and loaded it..it did the same exact thing as for the last couple days....loop and then sit on HB back ground.
rom only...no kernal added.
i also tried to mount sdext and when i applied it took me back to the same place in recovery...should it have produced data or showed a change?
oh, when i partitioned the card i seen that i lost 1 gig on sd when i looked in storage on phone.
unless i did something to the internal storage of the daily phone the only difference i see is one is activated and the other not.
thanks

i am not seeing "format" in recovery ...i checked advanced area also.
under show log:
checking for extended command..
skipping execution of extended
not found...

duh
i forgot to open mounts to find format...sorry
brb

It should be in the mounts menu (mounts and storage?)

Lol, never mind. I see you got it :D

here is a newbeee response lol

formating/ system
done
formating/ data
done

that is all i seen...no real data

No, that's actually good :D

That's what we wanted to see. If there was an error, that would be a problem :)

Is it also successful when you format sdext?

i have tried a few times to format to sdext but the only thing that happens is it takes me back to the previous page in recovery.
unless....i am not doing it right?

*new*
ok i should have done what you ask instead of going off of memory...grrr sorry

format /sd-ext
formatting /sd -ext...
done.

Well, i guess I'm stumped... I can't see any reason it wouldn't boot.
:dontknow:

Are you doing a factory reset after installing the rom?
(i don't remember if it does it for you)

....and I still say : Try a different brand of sd-card..... maybe the old 2GB card that came with the phone or ANY other card, besides the ones you already tried....., I had in the beginning the same mystery shit happen...... I have like three sd-cards, they work and format just fine in ANY other device, just not in the Prevail.... They even work on other phones, but not in the Prevail..... I even have 2 sd-cards from the same manufacturer, same GB, same class.... one works, one doesn't !!! Don't know what it is..... Just try a totally different card !! Just My 2c !!!!!

EDIT : Some ROM's, like older versions of CTMod also booted up the first time, then after changing to DATA mode, it required to boot back into Recovery immediately and re-format the sdext again and then re-boot the phone normally !!! Not sure if HB requires that as well.....

i have tried it both ways...with and without reset and the same thing happens.
i just tried HB again and it rebooted to samsung screen then to HD theme and was locked up solid.
on the spare phone i loaded over megatron and did as skater posted below and it works the 1st time, every time on the spare...i am stumped.

To Install 187MoD-HoneyBread:
-Download your choice of HoneyBread to the root directory of your sdcard.
-Reboot into Recovery, Go to -Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache>yes
-Let the install script run.
-Once it has finished, reboot phone.
-ENJOY

my tablet has a different brand/8 gig class 4 in it.
i will try it and let you guys know:smokingsomb:

oh,
is the 1024 o good to use size wise and should i do as i have done with the above card... system/data/sdext formats?

The 1024 is plenty...... I made a 2048 and don't use half of it...... Have like 124 apps installed and it's using only 768MB ! Same thing !

the tablet had a 8gig sandisk...thought it was a samsung...
i formatted the sd and turned off the phone..removed sd and loaded HB zip from pc..
installed the sd and booted into recovery...did a reset and cleared dalvik cache then let the zip load.
i ended up with the same results with the loops and frozen HB theme.
seems like it's something to do with ext4's?
i loaded HB5 beta and it showed what's below when finished but it booted up and worked...seems a lot different than HB6 non beta as far as the workings inside.

formatting phone to ext2...has a grey line through it when install is finished.
the HB6 shows the same except ext4 with grey line through it.
thanks for all the advice and suggestions...i'm scratching my head???
