Help Internal to external HD help?

I have a 250gig internal HD in my PC that I use to back up all my pics, files, and videos. I'd like to make this an external so I can use it with my tablet. I know its just a matter of getting a case.

What I want to know is will it work with out an external power source. It seems pointless if I have to have a powered HD. Eliminates the portability of the tab.

I saw one on newegg for $10 that does not have an AC adaptor and another for $20 that has an AC adaptor.

If it is a 3.5 inch HDD - any external case will include an external power source. Only 2.5 inch HDD external cases use power from USB 2.0 port

Thanks, I guess ill have to see what size my HD is. Is the 2.5 for laptops and 3.5 for desktops in general?

Looks like ill just have to buy a new external HD. Any recommendations? I only need like 80-100gigs, don't want to have to use a seperate power soucre and under $50 if possible. Thanks.

best buy got a couple seagate 320gb right under $50.

Although it's great to reuse what you have, the price of external drives have gone down considerably. You can get a terabyte for just over $100 now (3.5" disk). The 2.5" drives are cheap in the 300-500 gb range. Doubt you can even buy one smaller than that now.

These external drives are cheap, durable and probably better than buying a case for a used drive.

However, if you still want to get an external case, don't buy the cheapest one you can find if you plan to carry it around a lot, they tend to not hold the drive as securely and might not have the best connector.

I couldnt get my western digital 500 gig hard drive to work with my Acer. I cant format this drive to fat or fat 32 only exfat so i think that is the problem.
