Root [International] Backing up files before rooting

grantoid

Newbie
I purchased an android phone for the first time and loving it so far!

I have been reading a lot on rooting my device and the benefits but I'm still very unsure and afraid of bricking my phone in the first month of a 2 year contract. I'll give a little info on my phone in case it's needed...

Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 4.1.2 I9300XXEMB5 UK 'Three' network

I googled the baseband version my phone has and found this link - Root I9300XXEMB5/BTU UK Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Update with CF-Auto-Root - Androidayos

Does this look like a sound guide or is there anything missing?

I have my phone enabling debugging but is there any other settings I need to change before starting?

When it says to back up my phone before starting does it mean just my vids, pics, music, apps, etc? Or does it mean stuff from the phone to make it work should something go wrong during the root so your phone is not permanently bricked?

Havent read link yet mate but if youre only rooting just now, you wont lose anything.
Anyway all u can really back up without root is your media. P.s. can i ask for this to get moved to the GT-I9300 (internationa s3 like we havel) forum? Youll get more accurate replies there man

No probs.
Are u plannin to put a custom rom on it mate or just rooting to use certain "root only" apps?

:) since youre new to android, id wait until you know what u want or whats missing from the phone before deciding on a rom but this is the place to be mate.
Let us know how rooting goes

Yep, at the minute 4.1 is more than satisfying for me. :D

Problem already with the attempted rooting.

I can't get odin to start. I downloaded it and when I hit OK (as seen in the attached image) nothing happens.

What have I done wrong?

Try right click > Run as administrator?

Redownload it from another source perhaps? Those Symbols don't look good.

If that still fails, get an older version?

Do I hit start before moving on to step 4 (which is above the odin window in the image attached)?

Sorry to be a pain, I'm not sure if I did this right and should go ahead with it. I'm getting this in the message box in odin.

<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)

This is different to the guide...

It also doesn't say PASS in the top left so I'm assuming it's not right :(

I thought I had it going by the screenshot below but downloaded root checker app and get this message 'Sorry! This device does not have proper root access'

Is my phone rooted but I need to install something else to give it 'proper' root access or did I mess it up somehow?

It has been rooted correctly I think because I can now use root only apps and have supersu. Thanks for the help. Is it risky to use phone for a couple of days before doing a nandroid?
