[International / GSM] Worst thing I ever did....

Was root and flash my gnex. I was happy to get 4.1.1 ahead of everyone else, but now I cannot update any more. I get a constant notification that I have an update available, but it fails on the instal screen. I have tried returning to stock, couldn't do it but did manage to remove root. Now I am scared to brick it.

Should have just waited it out. Now my erodes gnex is more up to date than mine and she just waits for whatever bell pushes out to her.

Since Android is supposed to be so open source I can't understand why rooting and flagging involves so many complex steps. I would have hipped it would have been a simple procedure.

Honestly, if you've got the proper USB drivers installed (for fastboot), restoring back to stock or flashing whatever factory images are posted by Google is a straightforward process (I've done it at least 20 times).

By the way, if you were still rooted and/or had access to or a copy of the OTA's update.zip file (that wouldn't be it's name), I've got an app I wrote that will analyze the update.zip to see why it might not be installing on your phone (there's a script in the OTA file that does cross-/pre-checking of your device to see that everything is setup properly to ensure the OTA will successfully install; my app basically does the same verification but tells you what might be failing instead of just failing).

Thanks for the reply. To be honest I have no idea if I have the right USB drivers installed, I find it confusing. If there was a simple "install this file" action to perform I would gladly do it, but I cant seem to find that. I am sure I could manage to re-root it if I need to.

i would love a clean step by step procedure on how to do it. I have tried to follow a number of the instructions on XDA, but either I am too soft in the head or they are too complex. It also doesnt help that every one of those threads ends up like 200 pages long with "new" steps added along the way.

What is you app?

I'ts called OTA Verifier. I principally wrote it for rooted folks that were trying to manually install and OTA or anyone who tries to manually install a leaked OTA/ROM, etc.

You just point the app (navigate to the file's location) and let it analyze it. It basically evaluates the non-destructive commands in the updater-script file that contains various assert commands to verify/validate that your current setup matches what the OTA needs for it's installation to be successful.

Side note: my app can be run against any flashable .zip file--not just OTA's or ROMs. It's probably just most useful for the OTA files, etc.

As far as the "install this file" scenario, I've written lots of instructions, but have probably made them seem more complicated at first glance because I've put a lot of detail in them. Have a peek at the stickied threads in this ATR forum and see if there's anything you have specific questions about--I'm happy to help you :).

So, it appears I finally pulled my head out of my butt and got this thing right. I used the nexus toolkit, returned the phone to stock and unrooted, then re rooted. Low and behold the OTA updates started to flow! First 4.1.1, then for some reason 4.1.2. Now if only I would get 4.2.......

Thanks for the help, it looks like I am back on the right track again!
 
WOOO HOOO......... After another restart there was my 4.2 update. Happy as a clam now......

Amazing what a little bit of reading will do for ya :)
