Root [International] Rooting Galaxy S4 - Dummies Guide

Developer Options > USB Debugging <- does this need to be switched on like some other guides have suggested?

The purpose is so that I can print the instructions. Nevertheless I got it done and your instructions are easy to follow

Can you consider adding instructions on how to unroot in this thread?
 
To unroot it's essentially the same process except you download the stock Rom from sammobile.com and flash via pda in Odin :-)

Thank you for feeling the need to share this insight into the Huawei Premia 4G M931 with us ss1992.

I do feel that it may be a slight exaggeration to say that with no drivers for your particular phone and no relevant software for rooting installed on your PC, that it would take 2 minutes. As the guide mentions for the S4, once everything is in place, rooting takes a mere 30 seconds.

However, I do agree that your Huawei Premia 4G M931 would probably be easier to root, and this may have been the point of your post, as it was launched in March 2013 with the 18 month old Ice Cream Sandwich firmware that was a lot simpler and quicker to root than the much newer Jelly Bean, Android 4.2.2 and 4.3, firmware that we are dealing with on the new Samsung Galaxy S4's that were released a month later. Luckily you will not have to face this problem with your Huawei Premia 4g as the plans to upgrade it to Jelly Bean have, I am given to understand, been withdrawn according to this article.

Therefore, unless you change your new Huawei Premia 4G M931, it would seem that you will not have to worry about rooting stock Android 4.1.2 or Android 4.2.2 or Android 4.3.

If you just flashed the kernel from that link it would not fix firmware problems as it is only a stock kernel which, if you were rooted, would merely un-root you.

If you are having problems with your GT-i9500 stock Samsung firmware you will need to re-download the identical firmware, not just the kernel, from either SamMobile, as sntaylor suggested, or from the link you mentioned and flash the whole firmware via Odin. The stock Samsung firmware contains the stock Samsung un-rooted kernel which will return your phone to its stock un-rooted state, if you are indeed rooted, as well as hopefully repairing any firmware problems you have been experiencing on the stock firmware..

Since your question does not appear to be related to the actual rooting of your phone as described in the thread, could I refer you to #4.4 in an effort to stay on topic. ;)

Since kies recognises your phone it suggests you have the drivers installed. Have you tried using a different usb cable/port. Could I also confirm that you pressed up to enter download mode before connecting?

I received an update to my drivers yesterday when I connected to Odin. Check that you have the latest drivers/Kies version = 2.6.0.13064_2_3.

Ensure that Kies is NOT running and that your phone is in download mode.

While using Kies to test the connection, I updated Kies

Used the 3 finger salute to close all Kies processes

Phone is in download mode

How odd! Never had a problem about connecting to Odin from anyone who could connect to Kies, before! In fact, most people use Odin because they cannot connect to Kies but can to Odin!

Perhaps, try a different PC...
 
Finally got the S4 rooted

Noticed that there is a Blue reset before the green Passed

I need some help. I rooted my phone according the instructions here, but after i rooted, the phone started crashing. I noticed that before it crashes, my reception disappears. Anybody knows whether the rooting could've caused it? Or is it the samsung software? I'm still on the i9505xxubmf8 version. After it crashes, I can't turn it on as it'll crash again when it loads at the "SAMSUNG" sign. I need to connect it to a charger before I can start the whole thing. Would installing a custom rom help? Or is it just a problem of my battery? (I noticed how weirdly the battery percentage would increase by itself after rebooting it from the crash).

Ehem! This was the best guide I have ever read, it's frickin foolproof Lord Ironass! It's the best of the best and I'm so happy that there exist people like you that spends hours upon hours to help us dummies. I will remember this Sir, just give me a call if there's anything I can do and I'll do my best. I live in Sweden but there'll surely be something I can do. And I also want to remind you that there are hundreds of people getting help from this guide that are as grateful as I but have no account on this forum.

Could you please post your, "Version", details as per #2.0, as well as the kernel you used to root.

Correct rooting, in itself, should not cause that problem.

I wouldn't eactly describe it as, "fool proof", as I never cease to be amazed at the human capacity for screwing up or not reading the instructions properly. ;)

It's nice to finally be part of the Android community. I have been a long-term iPhone user but eventually switched to Android and I'm happy for it. But I must admit (coming from the jailbreak community) that it is harder to find good guides and videos showing how to install tweaks when it comes to rooting and Android - therefore the happiness I expressed in my last post. Though I'll also admit I like the Android lot the better ;) (always this bickering between Android and iPhone)

True, I've been one of those myself. Sometimes my eagerness to tweak with my phone get the better of me...

Your memory doesn't fail you Lord Ironass! Norrlands Guld lager is Swedish and taste real good as well :D

And now it's time for me to leave this thread and let it get back to topic.
 
UPDATE

Have added a WARNING at the very beginning of post #1 about using this guide to root the latest bootlocked firmwares, currently, MGG, MH5, MH6, MH7 and MH8, until such time that I can ascertain if chainfire's latest kernel for the i9505 is backwards compatible or not and when Triangle Away and Mobile Odin will work on them.

I also need to look into the i9500, as I am unaware if the latest MG9 firmwares are bootlocked or not.

As soon as I can find some time and receive a definitive answer, I will update the guide.
 
FURTHER UPDATE

Now that the dust has settled on the the latest firmwares that contain the locked bootloader and Knox security and thanks to the untiring efforts of dev's such as chainfire and DjeMBeY, I have withdrawn the earlier warning from the beginning of post #1 regarding the rooting of these new stock firmwares.

I have amended posts #1, #2 and #3 with new links and advice.

My thanks go to chainfire and DjeMBey for their patience in answering all of my questions regarding rooting these latest firmwares.
 
Hi after i rooted my phone and go into SuperSU it displays this msg. "There is no Su binary installed and SuperSU cannot install it." anyone knows what this is? i've rooted my phone before and have never encountered this problem before..

Have you checked that you have SuperSu installed as per #2.5?
