Ipad 2......no thanks

Im keeping my xoom! I use it for it work. I need something that I can organize documents into folders the way that I want to do it. I need to drag and drop! I don't need to record a band, play keyboards or drums on my tablet. I also don't need games. I've done my research. There is NO WAY the Ipad (i have one) or the Ipad 2 can do what I need it to as quickly as my xoom. I'm sure the Ipad 2 is going to sell well. It's a great toy. Not a good workhorse.

He is saying that some people who didnt wait, and went ahead and bought the Xoom may be regretting it and returning it to buy the Ipad2. I think he is right.

actually i think everyone who bought the xoom or is waiting for the wifi only model are feeling good knowing they made the right deicsion. the xoom has alot of features the ipad2 doesn't and comparable features are better on the xoom (HDMI for example). about the only thing i saw the ipad2 have over the xoom was the garage band thing (that did look cool) which i am sorry to say doesn't count because it is a paid app. paid software outside the os is a developer discussion not a device discussion. and if you want to go there google's movie editor is free vs imovie $5.

I think your lost...this isnt engadget or BGR

Go there and talk about how magical and revolutionary a HDMI adapter, a .3 lb weight reduction and a few mm's thickness is. And when you power it on in two weeks, its the same grid of icons of my 1st gen ipod touch.

i believe it is .2lbs not .3 , ipad 1.5lbs ipad2 1.3lbs. other than that you are pretty dead on :)

I posted some stuff a few minutes ago about price being in favor of the iPad 2. Now after learning a few more things about the iPad 2:

HDMI out by adapter

might still have 256MB Ram

Wont be 4G capable

Honeycomb as a OS just looks different and brings freshness to the table. I get why some ppl like WP7 UI. Its something different. But with Honeycomb its not totally different from the Android that we know on phones, but it is...ya know what I'm saying?...lol.

No SD card slot. Now, I know there is some issues with it right now with the Xoom. But it will be here. And I think thats why there are no different model sizes for the Xoom. Why make different size models when you have an SD card slot.

And no Flash. Yea it isnt ready yet, But remember when it wasnt ready for Android phones? It will be, just give it time. And on a tablet Flash should be alot more enjoyable. I like it on my phone.

Yea the Xoom doesnt have alot of apps right now, it doesnt have all features enabled yet, but I wouldnt say ppl will be retuning their Xooms for the iPad 2. Some will but I think there will be some ppl happy with the Xoom, $800 price n all.

Still waiting for the day that an android device even competes with a iOS product. Flash sucks on my EVO, and most Flash sites have made apps that work on iOS devices anyway.

The iOS is refined leaps and bounds better than Android, and the quality of the apps are far superior.

Still waiting for widgets, err 'gadgets, though.

Why in the heck would I return my Xoom for something that doesn't blow it out of the water with features? I have had enough with Apple and their fan base. They are so smug with themselves, and feel like they need to tell everyone that their products are better.

For example, go to the Droid X forums and try to find anyone on there that is saying my Windows phone is so much better or the HTC Incredible kills the Droid X.

Instead, you see all of these guys posting for the first time saying that Android phones are pieces of crap and can never compete with Apple.

IF I WANTED AN APPLE TABLET I WOULD HAVE WAITED FOR THE IPAD 2 TO COME OUT! I WANTED AN ANDROID TABLET AND I AM NOT GOING TO RETURN IT FOR SOMETHING THAT I NEVER WANTED JUST BECAUSE YOU SAY IT IS BETTER!!!

Ok, I feel better now that I got that out

iPad 2 first hands-on! (update: even more video!) -- Engadget

Show me that level of smoothness and refinement on your Xoom.
...with a video.

I honestly am not hating on Android devices, I own one, but I am not blind to other options, and the iPad is clearly superior.

Will I buy one? No, why? Because with my Laptop and Phone, my tablet would just sit around...is it the best out there, depends on the user, but I sure think it is.

Lol I thought the mods on Phandroid were trying to promote a friendly atmosphere free of extreme prejudice and malice. I guess their userbase agrees more with their site name. :D

I was waiting for the Galaxy S II but I might just go get an Inspire and use the money saved to get a cool iPad 2. I was planning on getting the first iPad eventually, but the announcements this morning really just wowed me. It is the same simple iOS, but that is why I like it. The wow part came from the drop-dead 8.8mm thickness. I mean even the SGS2 is 8.49mm, barely beating it, and it is a phone, a plasticky phone, that who knows when will be released. The iPad has that premium aluminum build that other slates can't really compete with, is far thinner, guaranteed great IPS screen, guaranteed great battery life, and first and foremost it is coming out in a week. The xoom is still a pretty unpolished effort by Motorola and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Optimus Pad have yet to show up.

And that fun and useful cover. Why couldn't the other manufacturers think of something so simple, elegant, and cool? OMG it rolls. Squeal. And a kickstand! Did I mention the cameras? The video recording will be top-notch, if the iPhone 4 is any indication, alongside Samsung as the top imaging devices among smartphones/tablets. HTC and Motorola don't have a good track record in this department, no one can deny.

And it is still $499! So much for the Apple tax. They have undercut the competition completely and have leveraged their huge buying power effectively. If I were to get an Android tablet, it might be that $200 Archos one they are promising. All the big boy android tablets have been sky high in pricing and have tentative release dates that keep changing. My sanity and wallet will thank me if I skip this Android tablet generation for the next one, hopefully one that is a much more concerted effort. Honeycomb isn't exactly blowing my socks away. They need to have a more professional theme besides the TRON nerdgasm.

So if it's leaps and bounds better go get one. Stop talking about it and be about it.

Its not in tablet form yet I dont think. But I will try to do you one better for phones: WP7 phones are smoother than Android and iPhones. Doesnt mean I want one tho. And it being smoother doesnt mean its superior to me.

iPad has alot more apps so they have advantages over the Xoom. I wouldnt call it clearly superior tho.

I actually like that Honeycomb brings something different to the table and still reminds me of the Android I use today.

Right now, everyone seems to be trying to play catch-up to Apple on the tablet front. It's been a year since the iPad came out and right now, it just feels like most others are trying to get a product out in the market. The Galaxy Tab came out last year in a slightly different (smaller) form factor. The Xoom appears to have been rushed to get it out the door before the iPad 2. It is well known that there is supposed to be an update to the Xoom to make it more "complete".

I don't think that there will be a product more appealing to the mainstream market than the iPad 2 this year. All other manufacturers are coming out with their first generation product. Even though the functionality may be there, the whole package of form factor and functionality is probably going to take a second or third generation before it the main stream pays much attention.

If you look at phones, it took a few years before Android really took off. Although, Android is well established now, Android tablets are still very young. Give Android and other manufacturers (RIM, HP) some time to catch up. They are more than a year behind Apple at this time.

You may be right that people will flock to the iPad 2, but I have to disagree with you about Android needing to mature. It's all a matter of perspective, but iOS is stale and needs an update for me to even consider it. iOS is really only for playtime and offers not much else. Android's Honeycomb is built for play and is also geared towards getting things done. Android isn't a year behind Apple this time. The roles have been reversed. Apple needs to play catchup in a major way. Sorry, let me rephrase: Apple doesn't need to catch up because a lot of people would be happy with an aluminum unibody box with nothing but a glowing Apple logo. It's a lot like the Toronto Maple Leafs - the team sucks but the fans keep on going to the games. The Leafs don't need to win games or the Stanley Cup. But from the perspective of an outsider looking in Honeycomb is leaps and bounds ahead of iOS.

The Xoom needs help, no doubt. I know equating sales doesn't represent which is a better product. But it is a definite indicator when determining the market leader.

I don't think the Xoom can beat Apple all by itself. The Xoom has two models and one of them isn't even out yet. So it's 1 Xoom vs 12 Ipad variants in March. HTC, LG, Samsung, Asus etc needs to join the fight already.

Considering Honeycomb is really new and the first generation Android OS geared towards tablets, I expect that there will still be some kinks that need to be ironed out. All the R&D cannot compared having the product in the hands of the masses of customers. I'm sure that there will be many customer comments that come out of the first generation Honeycomb tablets that will help refine the next generation.

The iPad 2 is an example of this refinement. There are many people who feel that the iPad 2 had features that should have been in the first iPad. I expect the same with other tablets as well.

It will also take some time for Android (and other) tablets to gain market share as well. The world (main stream at least) probably have heard of the iPad, but probably cannot name any other tablet. This name recognision is an advantage that Apple has and will have for some time.

lol. There is a reason why the Leafs don't want the NHL to put a new team in the area. If the NHL did put a team there, Leafs fans would want an NHL team, too. :D

hehe :D

But yeah, Android does need time to mature in the tablet arena. Honestly, I think the whole tablet industry needs more time to mature. iOS needs a major overhaul for tablets, and where Android has in the proper tablet OS, they need the get their app numbers up, but that's just a matter of time. Next year's Honeycomb (or 3.1/3.2) will be much improved. I'm personally going to wait until next year to pick up a tablet. The Xoom is very appealing, but quadcore is going to be very nice and I'm sure there will be some really nice changes to an already great tablet OS. The iPad 2 just doesn't grab me. It's basically what I expected from the first iPad.

It's all very interesting to follow, to be sure. :)

I'm going to wait until I feel I have a need for a tablet before I get one. Right now, other than battery life, there's nothing that a tablet can do for me that is so much better than either a laptop or a phone to warrant purchasing.

What I really want is for a device that merges a tablet and a laptop in one. This convergent device will have all of the functionality of a laptop, but without the bulky keyboard. I can then get a keyboard dock for it if I need to do some heavy data entry (typing). Something like a combination of the Atrix and a tablet would be idea. The dock will have a larger screen and the convergent tablet/laptop acts a secondary screen while in the dock. I have a similar setup at work with my laptop. I dock it and have a large 20+" screen and my laptop screen is open as a smaller secondary screen.

Having three devices is just too many for me. I want one that is really portable (phone) which I can carry without really noticing it. The other is mainly portable within my house for most of my needs and I can take with me if I plan to be away from home for an extended period of time. Right now, my laptop is great for being a portable device within the house, but a little on the bulky side if I want to bring it out of the house. Something with a tablet form factor, but the guts of a PC would be ideal if I want something portable away from home. At home, I will have my dock with a full size keyboard.

I would love such a device as much as you do, but I'm afraid it seems that tablets are coming fast and in numbers and will be here to stay for a long while.

But, who knows what the future has in store for us. Only time will tell.

Sent from my first-gen iPad.

But, who knows what the future has in store for us. Only time will tell.

For a long time, I only had towers or desk top PC's because laptops weren't powerful enough for me. A laptop in the past had half the CPU power, half the memory, half the hard drive space, and half the keyboard all for twice the price. Now, laptops have gotten more powerful and more affordable.

I have seen a combo laptop/tablet available. I cannot recall the manufacturer. It has a keyboard that folds away and you can use it as a tablet. Not sure of the weight. The MacBook Air is great and light, but costs twice as much.

I'm sure in the future, the cost of the MacBook Air technology along with tablet technology will go down and the power will increase to be good enough that I won't need a full laptop anymore. The only question is when will this happen.

There are many things that in the past I wanted. It took about 10 to 15 years before those became a reality and affordable for me. I hope to see the tablet/laptop device that I want before the end of the decade.

I love people who equate higher sales numbers to a better product.

Perhaps there is a reason why they do this? High sales figures do indicate that at least some folks like the product. I am not convinced the iPad 2 is better than the first version but that is a personal view based upon my anticipated needs.

I like that I can use my Flash drives and the camera connection kit to put documents on the iPad and freely change the GUI as I see fit.

Overall, it is a better product. The specs are almost identical to the xoom. But it has a far better price and will actually be functional out of the box. You won't have to wait a month or two for flash and you don't have to wait for the tablet ready apps. Ipad 2 is a better product. Sorry

Tis true, that is why I went with an iPad. Lots of issues with both but I solved my specific issues in about 30 minutes with a handy JB. Now my iPad rocks and it is as capable as the Xoom.

I have theme access, I can change the GUI at will, I can add software from fifty different sources with point and click ease, I have flash capability, access to root, I currently have 128 GB of memory and that is expandable to twice that and beyond, through the use of MicroSD cards or flash drives. And if I need 4G, it will be available through a non-contract plan and no need to send my iPad to Apple for a 4G upgrade.

I will soon get a cool USB Flash Drive with a built in WiFi router, so when I need to open documents through Pages, it is effortless and there are no wires. It streams high def video and music just as easily.

I recently downloaded several movie rentals through iTunes. Watched them both, and got a little work done like editing a large Word document and lots of business email. Still had 10% or so battery life left over. So the battery life is grand indeed and quite like better than the Xoom.

So the iPad is quite remarkable and its design, form, fit, and its construction is a by God thing of beauty.

That said, I know that something uber great will arrive on the scene and it will likely be Android. But for now, and that is all that is important, my iPad works better than anything on the Android side. And lest me remind you that I am talking about my very specific set of needs.
