Iphone 4 announced, I still rather the incredible

This is ridiculous. Steve Jobs builds up the new Iphone in an 8 step process with supposedly better news with each step which finally ended with the introduction of iAd, yet not a single person addresses it here?!?!?! Ads will create revenue for developers but the phone will now be cluttered with ads whether we want it or not. I hear people around here complain all the time if an app has an ad in it, yet Apple promotes ads being in every single app and not peep out of anyone here?!

I guess I'm all alone in the fact that I think it's a MAJOR downside, especially on a 3.5in screen and would much rather pay for apps than see stupid ads all over the place. I mean seriously, this was only "new" news I saw coming out of the conference.

no different than the apps in the Market that have ads in them.

I only know of a very few apps that do and most of them you can pay for the full version to get rid of them. From what I understand of iAd, there will be ads in nearly every, if not all, apps which will unnecessarily take up part of the screen. If I'm seeing this wrong, someone please enlighten me.

although i agree with the 'polish' comments to the iphone OS, but for me personally i always considered it kinda AOL looking. if you remember way back in the day how "kiddie" and cartoonie AOL looked once there were finally other options out there, that is how i feel about the iphone. just a personal preference and i do understand where that simple cartoon UI works great for alot of people who aren't technically inclined. but you do really have to laugh when one of the biggest applause from the apple OS event a few months was that you can now have wallpaper, i mean really come on.

I agree.
Apple and the iPhone are kind of in a sinking ship.

Sinking Ship? That sounds more like Anti-Apple sentiment than reason.
Clearly they are Google's #1 competitor in the mobile OS space, and currently they hold a market-share lead with iOS sales still going very strong and about to get stronger with a refresh.

I don't put much stock in Google's or Apple's statistics. Google's Ad-Mob statistics seem to be the only place they could find where Android was clearly leading, also Android recent sales *should* out-pace everybody because iPhone is on its end-of-cycle (I believe Palm Pre out-paced iPhone sales for a very short period too). Jobs said RIM is in the lead, Android is 9% market share with Windows Mobile having a larger number, but most of us know that the RIM and WinMo are mostly legacy devices that are hanging on. So Jobs is just trying a passive-agressive minimization of Android. I'm not buying that either.

The only two mobile operating systems that are selling like hotcakes right now are iOS and Android. These are the only serious contenders, and NEITHER are "sinking ships". Apple just sold 2M iPads in 59 days -- that's insanely good. Sadly, even with HP backing it, I think WebOS will become an OS with some great features but never really caught on.

I wish Google and Apple would find some way to be friends and Google could get Apple to do their hardware because the hardware on that new iPhone looks awesome -- more "wow" features than the iPhone 4 OS. But I think we are coming to a point where mobile OS features will plateau a bit, Android and iOS are just getting to a critical mass on things we would want to do on our mobile phones.

But when it comes down to it, we consumers have two awesome choices now. If you want the simplicity, consistency, and stability of a controlled environment then iPhone is your choice. If you want wide-open variety, cutting-edge frequent releases, and customizability then Android is your choice.

I am an iPhone user and I must say that coming from Palm Treo 680 it will be hard to give me a feature that makes me switch. Sure I love some Android and even WebOS features that I don't have -- and there are features on iOS that I can't live without. It comes down to this.... I rebooted my Palm Treo 680 at least once per day if not three times per day when running GPS and MP3 Player at the same time. I almost bought a Palm Pre instead of my iPhone 3GS and breathed a sigh of relief when I heard of frequent WebOS crashes from Pre users. The other day I just realized when trying to figure out how to do a reset on my iPad that I could not remember the two-button-hold sequence to accomplish this. The reason being..... I have not reset my iPhone 3GS in over 10 months (and counting). This is the same reason my last 3 cars have been Honda/Acura because I previously drove a Ford and Nissan and spent much more time in the shop. There is much to be said for build quality.

So sinking ship? Hardly. Still the only choice? Absolutely not. The leader? It depends on what stats you subscribe to (stats can be the best lies of all). The best mobile OS? It depends on what you are looking for -- its a matter of taste.

My most wanted feature: ability to run iOS or Android in a mobile virtual machine from an iPhone or Android device. When mobile phones get that powerful it will be cool. Although iOS licensing and App-Store rules would likely require a jail-broken iPhone to make that happen legally.

It kicks all HTC's phones butts right now because the A4 is far faster and sips less power than a Snapdragon. There's also that it's stainless steel and real glass, far better than the horrid fiction fit cheap rubber back on the Inc. The RETINA display is also better than Super AMOLED.

Where it loses is the 256mb of RAM. Although to be fair, all Androids can't use their full 512mb until 2.2..

A 1Ghz Snapdragon running Android 2.2 is much faster than the Apple A4 CPU. When it was benchmarked, it wasn't even close. The A4 does outperform a 1Ghz Snapdragon on Android 2.1 a little bit however. So for now, the iPhone 4 will be a bit faster than the Droid Incredible and the Evo, but that won't last for very long.

Anyone who has any real experience with computers knows that having lots of ram makes a world of difference in how smooth your general usage experience is. iPhone 4 is going to feel really limited when it comes to multitasking compared to a modern Android device running 2.2.

The Retina display is nothing more than a run of the mill LCD but with a slightly higher resolution. It still has all of the shortcomings that an LCD has(that are solved with OLED). It will probably take less than 6 months for an OLED phone to come out with a comparable or higher res screen than the iPhone 4.

Here is a picture showing an LCD screen(Evo 4G) on the left next to an OLED screen(Droid Incredible).

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_excdv1c1bcw/TAz_03z12QI/AAAAAAAAA0Q/uRbC_TR1lD8/LCD vs OLED.jpg

I don't see how anyone could look at that and then decide that LCD technology is better than OLED, let alone Super OLED(which fixes the sunlight problem of OLED).

I could type a whole lot more, but I just want to set the record straight: The iPhone 4 is a very comparable device to the Droid Incredible, Evo 4G, Nexus One, and other high end Android phones. It has a few advantages, but it definitely has more than a few aspects to it that are not as good as the high end Android devices. Can someone say the iPhone 4 is better overall? Sure. Can someone say one of the Androids is better than the iPhone 4 overall? Sure. Can anyone say any of these phones blows the others completely out of the water? Certainly not. That would be nothing more than fanboyism. They are all very much within striking distance of one another in virtually every category.

good information about LCD vs OLED.

Nice post, dguy. Where did you see the Snapdragon benchmarked against the A4? That would be neat to have on hand. Thanks for pointing out how nice the OLED screen is on the Incredible, most people forget about that (or don't care? idk...).

I just noticed on this iPhone 4 vs. HTC Evo vs. Droid Incredible [INFOGRAPHIC] comparison chart that the Incredible has 8gb of internal storage. So with a 32gb microSD card the Incredible will have 25% more storage than the iPhone 4. And twice as much RAM. [It should be noted that the EVO only has 1gb of internal storage.] Put in a 3500 mAh battery and the Incredible will also have a longer battery-life than the iPhone 4....

Although the EVO is unrelated to this thread, I just feel like repeating, just to remind people: THE INCREDIBLE HAS 8X AS MUCH INTERNAL STORAGE AS THE EVO.

Tests of the A4 chip(iPad) vs a Snapdragon on 2.1:

Apple's iPad A4 SoC: Faster than the Nexus One's Snapdragon? - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

Tests of the A4 chip vs a Snapdragon on 2.2 were done during day 2 of Google's I/O keynote. That can be found on Youtube:

YouTube - Google I/O 2010 - Keynote Day 2 Android Demo - Full Length

Various other CPU benchmarks show performance boosts of 2x and higher with the only difference being the device was running Android 2.2 instead of 2.1. The new JIT compiler makes everything go really fast. 2.2 should excite everyone big time.

I am currently a verizon customer and I am up for my "new every two". Seeing how this is an android forum I have a feeling I already know the answer, but I was hoping that I might get a few personal reasons why. I have read alot of reviews and watched almost every video on youtube, but Im still not convinced. Thanks ahead of time and I look forward to reading your repsonses!

As if there weren't enough Android VS iPhone threads out there? Do a little searching, figure out which one is best for YOU, not joe shmo 1000 miles away.

if u have to ask u want an iphone.
so i say...really? really?
but...was listening to this week in google and leo laporte (mac fanboy converted to android) believes, he wants the iphone...but ONLY for the screen. he believes the android is better in every way. so...deductive logic...samsung (the worlds largest maker of cell phone screens) says: apples new screen is great! but...it has nothing on AMOLED screens. which is what the incredible has. so...go live in the past if u like it there!

If you'd like a cleaner interface with less customization, I'd say go for the iPhone 4.

If you'd like something a bit grittier with lots of nerdy customization :D, I'd say go for the Incredible/Droid2/Xtreme.

Personally my experience was that although the iPhone is cool and all, I didn't see myself using it for much else than playing some games on it and texting. The UI is plain and boring to look at IMO. I don't have iTunes either so I didn't see myself using it for music either.

The Incredible, I'm using it for everything. The browser, PHONE, texts, weather, internet radio, e-mails, Google Maps, games, etc. I've become the go to guy for "Hey, what's there to eat nearby (Layar, Google Maps)? What movies are out (Movies)? Can you tell me the crossroads... How about the directions (Google Maps)? And etc." And everything is customizable!

Yes, you can get some of these on the iPhone, but I just don't see it serving that purpose~

And with the pace Android is progressing at... I think Apple is playing catch-up.

probably the best explanation i`ve seen on this :D

Oh boy another one of these. Look man first off this is an android forum so you're not going to get any unbiased comments here. You need to search for a more neautral place to ask your question. Try yahoo answers or something. What I can tell you is that the Incredible blows the doors off the current iPhone. And the current Android OS blows the doors off the current iPhone OS. Now like you I've never actually used a new iPhone 4. He'll no one had yet so I can't say how it is. From what I saw in the key note though it looks sweet and very promising. I will say this though, a lot if the stuff such as multitasking, folders, combined inbox, tethering that are in the new iPhone os4 was already in the Android OS and has been for quiet sometime. Although the way apple looks like they have done it looks brilliant. Anyway Android is a good OS. If youre gonna stick with Verizon the Incredible is a good phone but for now I really can't tell you ifbits better or not until the new iPhone drops.

please lock this thread. I apologize for my laziness and not serching the topic.

P.S. Im just trying to get my post count up

This pretty much sums it up. iOS is boring, Android is evolving. I left the iPhone because of how boring there OS was. I'm glad I did, iOS4 is huge let down.

For me, it came down to service. AT&T sucks in NY. Tried and returned an iphone due to crappy service. So, iphone v. android was irrelevent to me. If this is the same situation for you, then it doesn't matter if the iphone 4 is the greatest thing since slice bread does it? If you love AT&T, then you have a hard decision to make. I preferred android Incredible over the iphone 3g. But I've never tried the iphone 4.

I'm very surprised to find out that there are so little people actually talk about how much of a let down iOS4 is. Not being an Apple fan, I looked forward to the WWDC '10, hoping to see if Apple could come out and "wow" people. That was a huge letdown. To be honest, while watching Froyo's presentation, I was thoroughly impressed.

Above is my honest opinion, there is no bias (android v ios4).

DInc: 8mp cam, able to upgrade memory, able to upgrade battery, user friendly App development, better wireless network on VW

i4: front facing camera, better stock battery (rumored), chicks dig it, people will tell you you're cool then talk trash about you behind your back, iStrain
