iPhone 4 vs Captivate

I agree with Baldilocks. The only ones chastising Apple for AntennaGate were the Techie WeBlogs trying to be the first on something 'new', and the Apple/iPhone haters. I personally don't like the iPhone, and I thought it was way overblown.

Now, all the BS videos Apple did, THAT to me was just plain stupid. Especially with the Droid X - after they had admitted during that press conference that they had a Verizon tower on campus, they go and to the video with the Droid X, and it doesn't even have the 3G symbol on? With a tower but a few thousand (at most) feet away?

Come on - even *I* can make a better BS video than that..

At any rate, that whole antenna business is pure BS. Smoke and mirrors.
I can grab my wife's caseless i4 right now, touch the DeathStrip, and it'll MAYBE drop a bar...

All nonsense...

Continuing on that course, who in their right mind goes out and buys an iPhone, and doesn't use a case? ANY current-gen smartphone, for THAT matter.

All BS...

BTW, in the case of my wife, she's waiting to head to the Apple Store here tomorrow or Tuesday to get a case. She has a 'thing' for the InCase leather sleeve cases with integrated belt clip.

While the Super AMOLED screen is bright, it is NOWHERE near as detailed and crisp as the iPhone 4 screen. It's just a FACT that the iPhone can display text MUCH better than ANY other phone out there.

keyword: text

colors on the Captivate are much more beautiful and vibrant, I couldn't believe how much better they looked than the iPhone 4 when I did comparisons with games and videos. so, IMO this is at least an even result, there is now way the iPhone should win the screen comparison.

there is nothing that someone can say that proves one phone is better than the other, it is strictly preference. my biggest complaint about the Captivate was the 4 buttons at the bottom, so I removed the body glove case and sure enough the buttons are easier to find and press. I'm going to have to look into a full body shield instead, but that is the only legitimate complaint about the Captivate that can't be fixed with a firmware update, which is comparable to the iPhone antenna problem. the antenna problem is very real, but from what I have seen a case easily fixes the problem, so it's no big deal to me.

both phones are awesome

Well for me, it's official, the Captivate is going back. Android just really isn't my cup of tea right now, and the main reason to use any GUI is to access apps, and the Android market isn't quite there yet. However, I can't wait to see the evolution of this platform, and if this problem changes in the next installment, who knows, maybe an iPhone 5 isn't in my future :)

I'd have a hard time not recommending this phone however though. For a non-Mac, casual phone user, I'd suggest this over the iPhone 4 in a heartbeat. Great multimedia device for one void of iTunes, and a great phone for those who use it.

I'm nearing towards being in the same boat. I'm slowly uncovering deficiencies in the OS. I've found the email to be less than mediocre. As a matter of fact, it's purely unfunctional. I've tried several options for mail sync, none of which are reliable (or are battery draining). Email is probably the single most important thing to me in a smartphone (along with battery life, which is alright for the Captivate). I've had to setup my email accounts to forward to the gmail account on the device....sad :(...That coupled with the lack of GPS is sort of irking me. I might be returning it tomorrow. We'll see.

Sorry, but the antenna issue is way overblow. I have NEVER gotten any kind of signal fluctuation with my iPhone 4. Now, my Captivate?? It's signal jumps all over the place.

While the Super AMOLED screen is bright, it is NOWHERE near as detailed and crisp as the iPhone 4 screen. It's just a FACT that the iPhone can display text MUCH better than ANY other phone out there.

Also, now that the iPhone 4 is jailbroken, the 'gap' between the two has narrowed even more.

Like I say, I have both. My iPhone 4 impresses me much more.

Way overblown? Get real. Name me one phone that was manufactured that all you had to do was touch a single spot and your data transmission stops.

I mean get real people. You have to hold the phone in a certain way so you don't stop your data transfer? How is this not a huge deal?

Oh yeah because you have to use a case! Get a ugly bumper or thick ass polycarbonate case to cover up the "best looking phone ever". It is so ironic because they touted this amazing new antenna in the presser but all it takes is your hand to one spot and your phone is a POS.

Sorry Apple fanboys..you have no response to your phone stopping to work when you touch the bottom of the phone. No other phone in the history of cell phones has ever had that problem. YES you can make the signal attenuate on ANY PHONE BUT YOU CANNOT make the data transmission stop on any phone except for the iPhone 4.

It's a shame isn't it? I know you were one of the more vocal supporters of this phone, but I think the honeymoon phase is ending for a lot of us. It's a fine phone, no doubt, but just not somes cup of tea.

I'm not an Apple fanboy by ANY means - read my posts, and you would see that.

That being said, I WISH you were nearby, so you can show me the data stop transferring on either of the iPhone 4's in my house.

That's just plain stupid. You'd have to have barely a bar to start with, and at that point, just about ANY phone will attenuate enough to drop the signal. I'm probably one of the more critical people of the iPhone series, as I think it's just a cosmetic accessory/status symbol, and even I will tell you the antenna situation is pure bullshit, from anti-Apple/iPhone people.

There are plenty here that have BOTH phones in their house, if not for themselves, and you are basically just showing your Android fanboyism/Apple hatred.

'nuff said - I ain't starting another dumbass argument, because this one doesn't even hold water.

...I can't believe I'm defending the iAccessory, but fair is fair...

I've not really had any GPS issues at all with my Captivate, but I did have it completely lock up on me twice, and removing the battery the only way to get the phone back up and running. Also a few apps caused the phone to choke a few times. I had an issue just logging into my own Youtube account through the Youtube app. Restoring the phone fixed that though.

Google Maps with voice guided navigation blows everything on the iPhone out of the water. I don't need GPS all that much but when I do I want a reliable one. This is the one thing that I keep thinking about when going into the AT&T store tomorrow to bring back my Captivate.

Like another poster stated, I'll keep my iPhone 4 for a year and a half, then hopefully the newer Android phones will lure me in.

Heh - and you'll probably STILL double your money selling the i4 for whatever you get later on (assuming you did the $199)! I just sold my wife's 8mo old 3GS on fleaBay for $350+s/h, paid $211 (after tax) for her iPhone 4!

Before that, she got the 3GS in November 2009 for $199, sold her original 1997 2G 8GB iPhone for $250 on Craigslist.

Gotta love them iPhone resale values...

If the iPhone 3GS had the specs of the iPhone 4 it would stomp the Captivate outright. The Cap is competitive simply because of Apple's stumble with the iP4.

Sure the Cap has a few high points as does Android. It's *close* to being good. But overall? iPhone and iOS are a superior COMBINATION. For example, why is my 1GHz Hummingbird equipped phone stuttering and lagging? How can anybody release a phone that isn't even as smooth as a first gen iPhone (with a much slower processor) from 3 years ago? Why does the GPS suck so hard? No front facing camera? No LED flash? No importing MP3 playlists without having to use another program?

Customization is better on Android. But half the time you're tweaking and customizing just to get the phone to work "right". For instance, I had to use Handcent because the stock messaging app is awful. Who the hell thought having to hit "more" to read long messages was a good idea?

Apps are hit or miss but mostly poor in quality vs iOS. I've downloaded weather widgets that don't update, clocks that don't work...the list goes on.

I really like the phone's POTENTIAL, but the devil is in the details. The phone right now is less than the sum of its parts.

I completely agree with you. I see a TON of potential with Android in the future and even Samsung, but at this point, I'm not willing to test those waters. I'm hoping Gingerbread fixes a lot of issues I'm having with Android, and both hardware manufacturers and software manufacturers with problems regarding quality and functionality.

The iphone screen definitely looks better all things related to text, but the Super Amoled outshines the iphone when it comes to colors in games and movies, it makes the iphone screen look washed out.
lol, that's because the iPhone 4's screen is washed out. The colors on the screen are 36% undersaturated compared to the SRGB color gamut (HTC Incredible is 37% oversaturated and Droid X is only 6% undersaturated).

(Shaking head in disappointment). Yup...I think for the casual user, the phone would be fine. For myself, though, I'm very picky about how the phone functions. I seem to have found a way around my email problem. I've just finished setup, and I'll be closely monitoring performance through the work day tomorrow. I'll be posting a new thread tomorrow evening. I reeallly don't want to have to return the device, because there aren't much better options for AT&T (Aria's size is not my taste and I have my nitpicks for all the other smartphones). I've tried just about everything and I'd likely be going back to a Blackberry 9700 if I return the Captivate. If my new email fix works, I might be keeping it. At least then I'll be back to only one issue; GPS.

Load a webpage on safari using 3G or Edge...as it is loading press your finger against the lower left corner and your webpage will stop loading...now take your finger off and the page will finish loading. This is on every single iPhone 4 manufactured. If you deny this then you are one delusional SOB.

Also, the fact that there's:
1.5
1.6
2.0.1
2.1
2.2

Is NOT helping matters! You still have vendors (*COUGH* Dell *COUGH*) releasing Android 1.6 devices...

But yeah - iOS is SOOO much more mature, but it's had a good heads-up on Android. The next year will tell the tale for Android...

Froyo and Gingerbread will have to really step it up. Don't forget the elephant in the room (Windows Phone 7). Microsoft has a lot of money (to lure developers) and from what I've seen WP7 doesn't look half bad. Curious to see the polish on WP7 vs iOS and Android.

I'm extremely picky myself. One of the big things for me is dust getting caught around the system. I have OCD (clinically haha!) and it's ridiculously hard to get out. Not saying the iPhone 4 will be any easier for me, but many have said it's really easy to get out, and doesn't get lost in the in bezel. I'm also a HUGE hater of the email client, as this thing does not want to work with my university email.

This scares me about Android. I'm very afraid of my Captivate not being able to receive Gingerbread, as Samsung is stingy with it's last of it's drivers, and the community, all of a sudden, seems blank. I really hope Google addresses this with Gingerbread.

I think WP7 is going to shock a lot of people, and I personally cannot wait. It looks very slick, very hip, and seems like a very viable option for those who are more business oriented. Does need multitasking though, that's worrying.

At this point I think we all agree that the UI is personal preference, and the software (Android - Apple's IOS 4) is also a personal preference. They are both, no doubt, exceptional systems.

Aesthetics from Captivate vs iPhone is also a personal preference. However, I will say that if you do not like one type of Android phone's design, you can at least have other phone manufacturers designs to choose from. SHOCKING isn't it? Actually having OPTIONS and CHOICES? That is one thing that bugs me about the iphone, is there is only one (newer) design...

I don't know how accurate these facts are, but I found a site that stated the differences of the Super AMOLED screen technology and Apples Retina Display. From the site...

"The LCD Display on the Iphone 4 is 960x640, 326 ppi resolution and 800:1 contrast ratio, the Super Amoled at the Galaxy S has a resolution of 800x480, 260ppi and a contrast ratio 50,000:1."

Now, after reading that, you realize why the iphone 4 has not MUCH (in capital letters as some people on here state) but, better in terms of text clarity. Again, key word being text. The iphone 4 makes a great mini e-reader. No doubt about it! I don't use my device to read with though, rather I watch TV shows while riding the NYC subway to work, or even a movie or game. Thus, the 50,000:1 contrast ratio provides for insane graphics (i.e the full color range of RGB with rich blacks) giving me a much satisfied and enjoyable viewing experience while watching a show or playing a game. The iphone 4 has nice colors as well, but no where close to the contrast.

With that said, it isn't either or, it's which one suits your needs and wants. I don't use my phone to read books on, and I don't spend much time on the internet, and even if I did I wouldn't be holding it close to my face squinting to notice the pixels within the text. I can read everything just fine thank you. I care much more about my multimedia experience, and syncing it at home via all share with my devices to continue my shows or game, after work.

Oh and for the commenter that said everyone buys cases these days for their phones, so the bumper for the iphone 4 is no big deal, well, I don't use cases and I think they all look ugly. I buy a phone for the looks as well as the performance, and I never plan on covering up the industrial design of the phone. I wouldn't do it to the iphone 4 either. I take care of my things, and if it scratches or breaks, well, that is my fault and I'll go buy a new one and sell the "used" one on ebay.

Cheers.

Dude let it go.
I am a new android user because the Iphone4 DOES have antenna issues, and when people post comments like yours that gives Apple the fuel to blow off those of us who DID have problems. Your comments are ignorant.

I am glad, and somewhat jealous that you are enjoying your Iphone4. I am not going to bash it, because I know its a sweet phone. I'm glad you are not having antenna issues, enjoy it and happy happy on down the road.

I had a 3G, my wife a 3GS, and things were good. We never had issues with reception issues in our house. We even decided to drop our land line. Now the Iphone4 came out, so with drool cup in hand, I ran to the store and grabbed one. It was everthing I imagined. I loved it, until it started dropping calls. I never completed a call longer than 2 min in my house. So I did some research, and bought bumper. Now that got rid of the BARS dropping, which I could care less if there are 55 bars or 2, but it did not help at all with the dropped calls. I caught myself using the 3GS to make calls, and thought, wait! This is a phone first and formost, and although bad#@! it is not working at all FOR ME as a phone.

So here I am, a new Captivate and android user, with many questions. So far I like it, very different from the apple experience. This forum is AWESOME and my hat is off to its developer and everyone here that takes time to post good information here.

My main concerns so far are Gps obvious, and I basically have NO email capibilities in the edge network. Can the email be a setting I am missing?

Thanks!

Um, I have a Captivate, thank you very much.

My wife and youngest son each have an i4.

THAT is why I call "bullshit." I have both in my house, tried and tested both. Yes, touching the strip attenuates the signal, but STOPPING data?

Come on - that's just STUPID. You guys are F'ing Web Blog following SHEEP.
What's IGNORANT, is trying to tell someone who has TWO OF THEM in their house what it can and cannot do, when I can just grab one and call your bluffs. You whiners probably never even TOUCHED an i4...

He's a fanboy - I mean, just look at his USERNAME.

'nuff said - but I will repeat - I have a Captivate, NOT an i4.
I put a pic up in another thread, with a nice message on the Cappy's screen...

Anyways, I digress - I'm not getting bent out of shape for this nonsense - buy what you want, others will buy what they want. Me? I'm perfectly happy with my Cappy.

What both of you don't seem to realize is just because you have or haven't experiences problems with your small sample size of 1 or 2 phones in your specific circumstances doesn't mean that's whatever every phone is going to be like.
You don't have signal problems with your two iphone 4's that's great. Maybe the phones are better, or you have towers close, or your towers aren't serving as many people, I don't know.
What I do know is my friend has problems with his iphone 4 dropping calls and data streams.
By the same token I don't believe everyone has those issues.

It's like saying I got stale fries at my McDonalds once so I'm never going to a McDonalds ever again because their fries are always stale.

What's IGNORANT, is trying to tell someone who has TWO OF THEM in their house what it can and cannot do, when I can just grab one and call your bluffs. You whiners probably never even TOUCHED an i4...
...or is it more ignorant to deny the reception issue might be real for many, many iP4 users? You can obviously account for your own phone's performance, but is it fair to assume everyone else's experience is the same? Is it any more fair than the "haters" saying all iP4's have the issue?

I don't own an iP4 and probably never will... but it's not because it is bad phone. The "completeness" of the UI is very nice, but I have other criteria that hold more weight for me personally. That is what's cool about having a choice... we all pick what we want.

Rhetorical question: What's better... a Honda Accord or Ford F150? Most would agree they are both decent vehicles in their own right, but depending on the buyer's wants/needs one may be more appealing than the other. (Note: both will get you to the grocery store and back...)

[edit] oops... poster above pretty much said the same thing :o [/edit]
