iPhone 4 vs Captivate

What both of you don't seem to realize is just because you have or haven't experiences problems with your small sample size of 1 or 2 phones in your specific circumstances doesn't mean that's whatever every phone is going to be like.
You don't have signal problems with your two iphone 4's that's great. Maybe the phones are better, or you have towers close, or your towers aren't serving as many people, I don't know.
What I do know is my friend has problems with his iphone 4 dropping calls and data streams.
By the same token I don't believe everyone has those issues.

It's like saying I got stale fries at my McDonalds once so I'm never going to a McDonalds ever again because their fries are always stale.

I agree, thats the point I was trying to make. It didn't work out for ME.

But, hey he's got TWO of them in HIS house, I guess the rest of us that had problems are just dumb "sheep".

Sorry, didn't mean to kick your dog. I'm done.

...or is it more ignorant to deny the reception issue might be real for many, many iP4 users? You can obviously account for your own phone's performance, but is it fair to assume everyone else's experience is the same? Is it any more fair than the "haters" saying all iP4's have the issue?

I don't own an iP4 and probably won't ever... but it's not because it is bad phone. The "completeness" of the UI is very nice, but I have other criteria that hold more weight for me personally. That is what's cool about having a choice... we all pick what we want.

Rhetorical question: What's better... a Honda Accord or Ford F150? Most would agree they are both decent vehicles in their own right, but depending on the buyer's wants/needs one may be more appealing than the other. (Note: both will get you to the grocery store and back...)

[edit] oops... poster above pretty much said the same thing :o [/edit]

That's what I've been saying all along...
To each their own. But outright saying that EVERY i4 stops transmitting/receiving data when you "place a finger on the antenna" is just plain stupid, as well.

I'm not minimalizing anyone's issues with the i4, but I think it was blown WAY out of proportion.

Bottom line, is I'm entitled to my opinion, ESPECIALLY since I have both in my house, in a WEAK 1-2 bar area at home.

NO amount of fanboyism will change that fact.
I LOVE android, would NEVER own an iPhone, but at the same time, that was some seriously dumb media-driven drivel. Actually, not even media. I seriously doubt engadget/gizmodo/BGR are actually considered media...

'nuff said.

This is my last response to this lower form of human being. I tested this on my own iPhone 4 that I returned and all of the iPhone 4's on display at the Apple store. All of them stop data transmission, go ahead and tell yourself that you son and wives' phones are fine, you just want to believe that.

Go ahead and believe what you want, YOU ARE THE SHEEP FOR BELIEVING THAT JACK-ASS JOBS.

"Lower form of human being"

Wow - over a PHONE? You can't even TRY to make a point without insulting people? Does THAT make you feel all BIG AND BAD Mr Keyboard Commando?

In EVERY SINGLE POST you have to put AT LEAST one insult.

Oh, and *I* am the lower form of human being?

Nice...

You have ANY IDEA exactly HOW that makes you look?

I replied JUST SO IT STAYS for posterity, in case you realize later how truly ignorant your posts make you appear. You can edit YOURS, but you can't edit mine.

Have a nice day!

Just an FYI Sharkonwheels: In case you missed the conference that Steve Jobs recently held, he acknowledged the iphone 4 having a reception problem.

Your families iphone 4's may just have been a batch of good one's. Either that, or you live in an area where you get insanely good reception, and thus the antenna issue wouldn't be a major problem.

Oh, I know there's a problem. I saw the press conf.

But saying EVERY iPhone 4, EVERY TIME you press the band, will STOP data transmission, is bullshit.

It attenuates the signal, of course, and the stronger the signal you started with, the less effect it has.

But to outright say it ALWAYS does that, 100% of the time, is pure, unadulterated android-fanboy Apple-hater bullshit. And I freaking HATE the iPhone. Around here, we call it the iVagina - for me, it's a chick's phone, an accessory.

What I hate more, is uneducated people, who haven't a clue about what they're speaking of, no experience with RF and antennae, yet insist on spreading their "gospel." It's what started the whole mess to begin with!

I mean, google around - accusing ME of being an Apple/iPhone/Jobs fanboy is just about the stupidest EVER!

But that's OK - everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Of course, the WAY they try to express their opinion, shows you what mental level they are at... It's like showing up at a gunfight with a pocketknife.

Cheers!

These arguments are too funny. Iphone Vs Captivate - this is what next wars will be fought over haha

This is my take on the whole thing:

The captivate is an amazing device there is no doubt about it. Iphone is also an amazing device on its own

working for AT&T, I am just glad AT&T now has phones it can offer that are comparable to the Iphone. It's always good to let customers have a choice, and who knows, maybe a lot more IOS freaks will convert to android making a more diverse community on AT&T.

The GPS issues on the captivate suck, I'll openly admit that. The antenna issues on the I4 are also pretty crappy. Android is better for Gmail based email and Iphone is better with other types of email accounts.

each phone has its problems,

and personally I'm going to stick with the captivate (being an android guy) with faith that Samsung will do what it can to resolve the issues

One feature on all android phones that I could not live without is the ability to select word wrapped text size in the browser. With the iphone you only have double tap if you want to word wrap. If that size is too small you are out of luck. Wiith android, you can zoom into any size font and THEN double tap and it word wraps in that size front. For people with not so great eyesight or just want a bigger font, this is a huge android bonus.

That's where I'm sticking...
Started with an unlocked Rogers G1 on AT&T, then the Backflip, now the Captivate. I can't see me EVER getting an iPhone - too "chic" for me!
Although the new "industrial design" looks better, still not my cup of tea.

Yo, since you work for AT&T, where's the other Android handsets they owe us? They said 5 in 1H2010, and we're like WELL past that! Only gotten 3, and Samsung wasn't even ON the original list (Dell,HTC,Moto)!

Hahahaha, holy hell dude, it was a _joke_. You two were going back and forth for post after post, figured something out of left field would lighten the mood.

Ahh...'k.

Cleaned THAT sh!t up in my previous post..

Yeah - a little humor would go a long way.
Some people are just SO blinded by fanboyism...

Anyways, Q:

In another "why I returned my captivate" thread...
We're discussing screens...

Anyone here have the iPhone 4 with the 2-for-$20 anti-glare screen protectors from AT&T store? Do they give like a wax paper effect to the screen?

T

Hahaha, yeah, sorry, I forget I haven't been here long and people don't know my sort of sense of humor. I showed it to the Wifey

I enjoyed this read. Obviously as a Mac user and MobileMe user, it would be easier to sync with the iphone.. As a google user would find android easier, and Im guessing an outlook/hotmail user will find winodws 7 phone to be easier.
I am disappointed that the battery life on the Captivate was less than stellar.. Battery is one of the most important factors for deciding on a phone.. Whats the use of a sweet phone if it dies by noon?

Umm, I feel like I'm stepping into a firestorm judging from the tenor of the previous posts, but I have some questions, so here goes:
First off in the interest of full disclosure, I have a 2+ year old iphone 3g (not "s"). It generally filled my needs (which was to play podcasts, games and get email/twitter/facebook during my soul crushingly dull job). I am by no means a power user. That has nothing to do with iphone/android- I just am not the type of guy who's going to jail break or root a phone- I'm not a technology luddite, but I definitely recognize that 99% (if not all) the people in this forum are technologically more capable than I am.
So, with my limitations in mind- is the captivate a good phone for me? (because of the family plan, I'm tied to AT&T) I noticed not a lot of love on these forums for touchwiz. Is it really that bad? Also, is the AT&T bloatware really get in the way that much?
I have ordered an iPhone 4, on the off chance that it will work well in my area, I can still keep the games I already paid for. If it drops calls I'll return it, then the Captivate option comes in to play.
PS- I sort of don't get the loyalty and animosity that is between many of each side. I look at Apple and/or Samsung as megacorporations who are taking my money. I have no love for either. And regardless of if I get an iPhone or a Captivate, all my phone purchase will say about me is that I HAD (past tense) an extra $200.
Anyway, any answers to my questions would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

There REALLY shouldn't be a firestorm - bickering over phones? Man, life's too damn short.

I'll tell ya THIS way: iPhone 4 has 30 days, NO restocking fee.
Try it out. If not satisfied, return it and get the captivate.

Easy peasy - ONE of the two should satisfy you.

T

Haha well 1 I never intended this topic to make a Civil War within AT&T between the Captivate and the iPhone. I was simply stating my position on the two sides to merely help those who are in need of a phone and have a tough decision between these two top of the line phones. I will stick with the Captivate, and although they both have issues, I feel the Captivates are less severe. The fact is, a phone is a phone and without any reception on my iPhone I honestly see NO purpose in carrying it around. That being said, I have a bit more faith that Samsung will push out these fixes ASAP due the Captivates siblings going to Verizon and Sprint. If they are unable to fix any of these issues, there will be a big problem in sales of the Epic and Fascinate because not only will there be the unreliability of Samsung, but there are other greater/safer phones to buy on those two companies.

Hmm, the iphone 4 has so many issues...

- Antenna (data and voice issues)
- Proximity
- fragile (vulnerble when dropped on hard surfaces)
- Glass surface on the back and front can be a little too slippery. (Every time I pick up my friend's palm pre it slips around in my hand and I drop it, its like a soap bar lol)

Not saying its a bad phone but it has issues like most other electronics do. Its not flawless...

I have been toying with going to the iPhone 4, which would be hilarious for me because I started with a iPhone 3g, then I went to Samsung Moment (hated it), then HTC Hero (mediocre), then HTC Evo (awesome size screen, but blah compared to Captivate screen wise and GPU, fps etc.) and now I have a Captivate. I probably will change my mind in a few weeks, but let me tell you I am starting to think the Captivate is underrated. The lag complaints are hilarious because I have seen the iPhone and iPad for that matter lag when trying to run too many apps/downloads at one time. It's completely normal for a phone to slow down slightly, even dual core computers do this, until we put I3's+ in a phone my guess is there will always be some lag. I barely notice because once I feel a slow down happening after downloading 3+ apps I usually just let the phone catch up for 2-3 seconds.

My reasons for keeping my Captivate:

-Super Amoled (Holy beautiful colors batman, I've never seen this on a phone before, outshines every phone I have compared it to: I4, Evo, 3gs...)
-24 hours to test apps in Android Market
-Nearly unlimited customization (this will be a lot more important to people after owning the same phone for few months, just today I realized when using ADW you can drag an app to your garbage at the bottom of the homescreen and if you hold it there for 2 seconds it asks if you want to delete the app! I love learning awesome things like this on a phone)
-True multi-tasking (I was playing the Carrom pool game ((awesome game btw)) and since it's multiplayer you have to wait a bit for your opponent to shoot, well just hold the home button down and go back to browsing the web, watch a youtube video, make a quick call, or whatever you were doing the last 5 apps, absolutely brilliant)

None of those reasons even include rooting. I think both phones will make their owner happy, but I don't see myself switching, at least for today.

Here, here!

I may exchange mine out on Friday for a (possibly) later unit, but other than that, I'm sticking with the Cappy in the meantime.

However, I'm a GadgetWhore, so I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for new toys...

If they put out the Galaxy S Pro (slider) next month, I'd be all over that like cops on donuts.

Keyboard is the one thing I miss on the Cappy - one of two things from the backflip.
Second is the awesome sensitivity of the capacitive buttons (Home, Menu, etc..)
