iPhone 5 live launch

Apple have a reputation for releasing new products that attempt to improve people's lives.

The iPhone 5 doesn't do that at all. And that is the disappointment. At least Siri tried to.

Improving the technology you already have is all well and good in a model upgrade, but as a new phone? Please. It could and should have been so much better. They haven't offered any new technology that will change the way I do things.

This is the end result of only investing 2% of your revenue in R&D, when Google and Microsoft invest 14% each.

I think any sort of exodus from Apple will depend greatly on how much people already have invested in the ecosystem. Someone with only a few apps and no accessories might decide to switch, but those that have dug themselves in deep with car adapters, stereos, tons of apps, etc. may just end up deciding that they have too much in already.

the apps .. is a good point.

but with the new i5 with the new smaller connector.... that will make the accessories obsolete. sure, there is an adapter, but it is a big square, which will make a lot of the docs unusable. (this is another sour subject, why a new connection, but an adapter can work? does that mean there is NO advantage to the change?)

I believe the advantage lies in faster transfer speeds. The aging connector design, as I recall, is dated in transfer speeds and the new connector brings it up to spec. It was a necessary change, IMO.

The connector change would be a sour point for me as well. Especially with the little adapter being about $30 each.

I'm sure I will be equally annoyed when the new nano usb connectors come out and I have to change out all my cables or get an adapter.

The thing is that a lot of people will just get the adapter and see no real different in performance though. Completely defeats the purpose even if it is necessary.

The cables are one thing, that $300 speaker dock that needs an adapter is another.

but with an adapter... can the i5 w/adapter fit in the $300 slot? so that ruins the look of the expensive accessories.

I think those devices are the main reason the adapter was created. Will it ruin the look? Probably, but it will still function. There are iPhone to Android adapters that do the same thing though.

Either way, not something I would be thrilled about. Also the reason I stopped buying custom accessories to fit one specific product. I change phones far too often.

I'm going to bet the main driving issue was the size of the port. The smaller port gives them more room internally to cram stuff in.

True about the cables. Or they'll plug their cable into a USB 2.0 jack and lose most, if not all, of the advantages. Anything short of the Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 would probably diminish the transfer speed.

But I'm trying to put myself in their shoes. If they left it with the old connector, their laptops would be moving forward but their mobile devices wouldn't be able to take advantage of these new transfer protocols. If they changed, there would be a lot of transition aches. I think they were between a rock and a hard place. Given the same choice, I would have probably done the same.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I understand what they are trying to do. The newer connections are a lot faster and it only makes sense to use that speed. I just think it is a shame that they are still forcing people to use these proprietary adapters. Most cell companies got away from that a few years ago. They pushed the iPod/iPhone cable so hard for so many years and changing it would be very frustrating from a user standpoint, IMO. They should have really be working on wireless sync instead of better adapters and cables anyway.

millions of iphones will be upgraded.. fast. this will be a success.

but i do think there will be a large portion of this market that has been waiting.. and have been consumer savvy enough to know what has been available in OTHER devices. there will be a bleeding of these consumers to android

I was waiting for this iphone5 release for a while. I have had iphone since the 3G. Every model. You just get used to it. Nice sence of community etc. But the Galaxy S3 was where a lot of us almost woke up so to speak. Denying ourselfs a great phone out of a combination of loyalty and just being aquainted or comfortable with what you got. There wasn't enough of a leap for me to stay with apple this time, i wanted to but a bigger screen was one of my top requirements. A lot of the less fanatical Apple users will come over. I'm looking at the note 2.

I have owned many android phones including the latest razr maxx and s3.

I've read a lot on Twitter, BBC News, and MacRumours (and other news sites) this morning about how Apple are "playing catch up" with Samsung, HTC and other other companies with respect to the iPhone 5 screen size.

It's unbelievable how many time I've read "... still not as big as other leading phones...", "...still smaller than a lot of other touch screen phones..." etc etc etc.

Since when did biggest screen = best phone?

If Apple was playing catch up, it would have made the screen the same size, if not bigger, than the SIII (which is portrayed as been the standard for smart phones a lot of the time). In my opinion, Apple played it smart. They could have quite easily made the screen larger in both dimensions, and generated a massive "wow factor" after the keynote in the media and got a massively positive reaction. But at the end of the day, it's how the phone feels when it's in the individual consumers hand (and Apple know this), which is why they went for function over aesthetics.

And as for people complaining about "the interface been outdated" because "it's been virtually unchanged since 2007", get a grip. The operating system works, brilliantly. It's not the operating system's job to wow people, it's the apps. Luckily, with an iPhone, you have access to the worlds best App Store! So the operating system can just do its job of working well and providing a stable platform for apps, while the apps provide all the fun.

Saying this, there's still room for some added features, like settings toggles in notification centre, as well as music controls... I'm betting they'll include that in iOS 7.

I think once the media and a lot of people get over the initial "disappointment" of the keynote last night and this phone gets into peoples hands, the general attitude towards the iPhone 5 will change. It looks like an amazing phone, I'm certainly looking forward to see what else Apple will do to refine and enhance it with the "5S"

This phone has more goodies than any other phone on the market.

Retina screen, built in to the screen the touch sensor vs another layer like other phones, one chip for all cellular bands unlike other phones with two. This is the reason it had awesome battery life. It's the only phone In the world with this new chip. a6 processor uses less energy but performs faster than others, 3 mics, for voice but also clear what you hear from the speaker, better speakers with hd audio support, only camera like it, some are close (s3) but not there yet, best battery in any phone (8 hours of continuous usage of LTE), thinnest phone, lightest phone, fastest wifi of any phone. Yeah those are improvements that no one has but they are close.

Facts are wonderful. Open your eyes folks.

Bunch of cry babies here.

Making personal attacks on others is really not needed, thanks.

I believe that's the first time I've seen that statement made about any iProduct, to be honest.

As for your facts - I think it's one thing to accept what's being said in the blogosphere, another entirely to claim that they're all true facts.

I say that because my eyes are in fact open - wide open. :)

Your post comes across as very upset. Why so angry nizmoz?

As far as how the phone feels in your hand, that is pretty subjective, no? Everyone has different hands and everyone appreciates a different size phone. It is one of the reasons choice is a nice thing to have.

Strange outburst. You say since when does having a bigger screen equate to being the "best" phone. Well, that's completely subjective quite obviously. "the best" phone to some may be the biggest screen = easier web reading, more dynamic games etc so to some that is the "best" type of phone.

To others the "best" might be more horsepower. Like the new LG Optimus G. Really powerful. Faster phone, apps opening etc. to them that is the best type of phone.

People are allowed to define whats best in a phone for themselves. So you shouldnt find it "unbelievable" people want a bigger screen. Regards going over to Android I am concerned regarding how stable and smooth it is. As never once at all have i had slowdown etc on my 4S and i truly kill it.

There are people with just about every brand of phone or OS that can say the same thing. It all depends on what you do with the phone.

I've seen apps crash on iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. I've seen freezes and/or lag on all of the above as well. I've had phones that work flawlessly and phones that have made me wonder what anyone was thinking when they designed it. The nice thing is that you have time to try before you commit and that is something that everyone should take advantage of.

Definately. I can only talk from personal experience though. I truly do everything on this 4S and it's never once slowed down. Or crashed. I'm not saying this is the case for all iphone users, just me. So naturally because i'm used to this level of smoothness i'll miss it if it's not in my next phone which is more than likely going to be Android. We'll see. I believe the Note 2 comes with the newest Android operating system? This is the phone i'm looking at. I just wamt it to stand up to what I'm gonna give it if i get one! I'm not used to any kind of slow down or slow loading etc so we'll see.

.

ios was not designed to dynamically scale to different resolutions. Most of the apps and games on the app store will not work right. They'll probably be letterboxed so you really don't get the larger screen.

That's just from simply making the screen taller. What if they want it to be wider and taller? More problems for apps. Motorola was able to provide a 4.3" screen in the same form factor, not just because they figured out a way to take out the side bezel but also because Android is flexible.

You can say what you want, that the screen is just "right" but in the end, Apple's decisions are determined by fundamental limitations in the operating system. Google figured out these problems years ago because of previous experience from PalmOS.

iP3gs = 480x320

Android was eating its lunch with 800x480, so they doubled both dimensions so devs could scale their screen mapping by going times two.

2*(480

We all know the 5 will be a big seller...when has Apple released a product in recent years that has done considerably well?

Me, personally, I would not even look into getting an iPhone until the UI is changed. Sorry, its just to bland and simple for me...I like the option to change things around however I feel.

One thing of curious note, if they moved the touch layer in with the display layer, wouldn't it mean the phone would be useless if cracked?

And I mean the small crack on the display layer...not the full blown smash cracked.
