ipod died... new one or 32gb in the Inc?

My ipod video 60gb that I've had for a while kept shrinking in battery life. I tried to replace the battery myself but the shoddy pins bent on the device so now it's a hockey puck.

160gb iPod Classic now just $249.

the 64gb iPod Touch is $399. I do remember that it wasn't as good a music player, and the dock connector actually doesn't fit any connectors you had previously. It fits, but music won't play out to like a rca converter. Stupid Apple.

I could just buy a 32gb microSD for my Incredible but would I be happy with the Inc as my primary music player? I just wish the Inc had a line out, instead of me relying on the headphone jack which is already pre-amped before piping it through my car stereo.

Thoughts?
 
Well... if you are going to just buy out of contract and use it as a media player, that's a pretty weird move. Sure though, HTC has some nice media apps, if not, there is the market.
 
No, I own an Incredible. Just considering buying a card and using it as my media player in the truck.

Relatedly, has anyone tried to add a bluetooth adapter to a factory stereo deck?
 
Buy the card. You can do what you want with YOUR music and not be tied to what SteviePoo says you can do with it. When you're phone becomes obsolete and you are done with it, simply pop your 32gb card in another android device and enjoy your music on it.
 
I'd go with the 32gb SD as well. I'm actually having this same battle with myself. I have the 30GB video iPod and really want to just transfer all my music to my Inc like you're thinking of doing. After Christmas when I have the extra money I think I'm going to finally do it. Also, I'm curious about what people have to say about adding bluetooth to a factory deck. I've been looking at some BT devices but I'm not 100% sold on any yet. I wanted the X2 but the price is now $15 more than when I first saw it and, frankly, I'm not sure if it's worth the $50 price tag. If I were to get one I'd think it would be the T505, which I've heard good reviews about from Inc users.
 
Buy the card. If I didn't already have an iPod Touch before I got my Incredible, my Incredible would be my MP3 player. You are also not really gaining anything by buying the iPod. With the way things are going, most of the big iOS games and apps are coming to Android, and most are free too. So from the apps stand point you are not going to be missing much. And if you use your Incredible as a media player, you don't have to deal with iTunes anymore. Thats a major advantage in my opinion. I would much rather just drag and drop files to my phone rather than sync them to it through a client like iTunes.
 
All good points, though:

1) I frown at reducing my 60gb music collection to less than half if I went w/ the card. But more so...

2) I prefer a client over drag-and-drop. Maybe doubletwist would be ticket, esp. w/ its wireless syncing.

3) my biggest concern is podcasts. Itunes makes them easy to catch and play. The podcast players on Android haven't impressed me too much. I guess doubletwist could sync w/ itunes to get my podcasts, but I don't know how htc's music player or others handles podcasts.

Doubletwist plays and syncs podcasts too. I think the player is pretty good. Does what I need it to do anyway (play and stop...;). I believe a recent update added lock screen controls too. But some reviews of the air sync ability are less than stellar.

Voice of minority - I say replace the ipod.
- I think its still a superior media player over htc or doubletwist.
- Plus no lockscreen to handle (but you could disable it i guess).
- And yes I too wouldn't like to limit my library in half.
- Keep your battery life on your phone and kill the ipod's - if you don't have your charger with you of course..
- If you have a lot of itunes bought music get it.

Although i don't like many of Apple's practices, they do make a damn good product.

I'd stay with the ipod. As jayefef said. Itunes has their stuff together when it comes to music and portability. After having been with Itunes for as long as I have, switching everything over to my Incredible would be more than a hassle. It would be a train wreck. While the incredible is more than capable of doing the job, the music players (all I've seen) do not come near the Ipod.

All that aside, I can't stand when your riding in the car with someone who owns an Iphone, and when they get a call, the music halts. Music and cellular phone should not go together IMO.
 
I bought the 32 Gb card and am happy enough with it, but agree with earlier comments about using third party apps. I use iSyncr (which also has a wireless sync option as an add-on) to sync with iTunes and Mixzing to play, and I'm pretty happy with both. But for podcasts, you can sync them all right, but the player doesn't treat them like an iPod does, but only as a play list.

Video is a different story. I put video on the dinc's internal storage since the micro-sd card is class 2. I notice the transfer speed issue when using a slider on the player to jump to the middle of a long podcast - it takes quite a bit longer than it did using my older 16 Gb class 6, and it's not reliably fast enough for video playback (I use Act 1 for video, btw). And video drains the battery so fast that Act 1 actually shows the percentage battery left on a running basis.

I'll also mention that my 16 Gb card became corrupted and had to be replaced (by manufacturer). I thought it was from removing the dinc from the USB mount without clicking safely remove hardware, but it was something else since it couldn't be reformatted. I have the feeling the micro-sd cards are a lot more liable to become corrupted than the solid state memory in an iPod.

Final issue I would add is that the iPod is built to be a media device, the dinc is built to be a small all-purpose computer that makes phone calls too. That means the iPod works right out of the box, while the dinc (or any android phone) takes a few third party apps and some tinkering around before it works like you want it to. It also means that there are a lot more options for linking an iPod to various devices than there are for the dinc.

Bottom line for me, the 32 Gb card and some third party apps, coupled with a few hours getting things to work the way I want them to means I only have to carry one device around, not two.
 
I have not one song on my DI. My minority vote is to go with the iPod. I am not a Steve Jobs rider, but I love having my iPod for a few reasons- main two....

* I have a 160gb Classic that's full (and agree that I don't want to cut my collection down to fit it)
* While I love the general notion of the integration of gadgetry, I like my mp3 separate from my phone. If I'm in an airport/plane or other headphone-friendly place, I don't want to kill my phone battery listening to my tunes. For my truck and home, the iPod is fully integrated, so no need to tether my phone to either place.
 
I love my iPod (32GB, 3G), but i feel bad given how little use it has received after i got my Inc. Frankly, i HATE (LOATH, DESPISE) iTunes, so being able to get away from that explicative deleted was a god send. I OWN all my music, and forget apple telling me otherwise (music bought on iTunes only usable on a pod).

Anyway, the iPod's player doesn't do anything that i can't find in one of many other programs (Doubletwist, poweramp, winamp, etc) each offering unique features. I would say ditch the pod, but i guess that might be more difficult if you don't want to give up the crapware...

My iPod gets 0 use now I have a Dinc. I've got 100 gigs plus of music, so I loved the huge iPod classics when they came out.

But what I do now is, run Sub-Sonic a music streaming server on my home pc. It stores all my music, then got the sub-sonic app (works from web based too) on my Inc. Now I can steam 100 gigs of music to my phone anywhere! My own pandora.

Streaming with the 3g works great, haven't had any buffer issues yet. Plus I don't have to carry around another device for music. I can get a car dock/charger so it doesn't drain the battery while jamming and driving.

Then all the worries about syncing your device with PC music is out the window. You could even still use iTunes on the pc to grab your pod casts and manager your music, just point subsonic to your iTunes music folder.
 
Get the touch. I LOVE mine. Not the greatest music player but does everything else very well and I love the games available.

My reason for keeping with a touch in addition to my phone comes from owning a 3G iphone. I used it for everything and just when I needed to make a phone call the battery would be dead. The Incredible battery life isn't the greatest as it is even with a custom ROM and a Seidio 1750. I can't imagine using it for music on top of everything else i do with it.
 
I say buy the card. I use DoubleTwist with AirSync and I love that I don't have to connect with a USB cable to sync my music. Since most people have their phones with them at all times, you're never without your music.
 
I'd say go with the Incredible and the 32GB card for one simple reason, the ability to delete any song you want on the fly.

I like to regularly rotate my music as there's always new music to listen. So if i feel like skipping a song, that means its just wasting space so I just delete it instead. Even with 40 GB of storage available I find the sweet spot for music is around 12-16 GB. Any more than that and it seems like a couple of months go by before you listen to a song again (assuming you listen to your whole collection).

And for those knocking the audio quality of the incredible, take the time to install the DSP equalizer. It makes a world of difference and sound better than any ipod (just from the bass quality alone).

PowerAmp is light years ahead of the Ipod as far as functionality, and it's also very quick compared to the Inc's default media player. Pair it with tasker and you have a fully automated machine that you just plug into you cars audio jack and go (or headphone, bluetooth etc..)

If battery is a problem just get an extended battery or keep chargers around. I recently went snowboarding and used a bluetooth headset and constantly listened to music for about 6 hrs before my ears hurt, then I still had over 40% battery left (this is with the stock battery).

I'll have to check out the streaming apps for my home collection, sometimes it's nice to be able to just listen to any song you want without your whole library cluttering up your card.

I realize not everyone has the same listening style, but comparing the 2 just for their media qualities and capabilities I'd say the incredible wins by a large margin.
 
Buy the card. If you worry about the battery dying because you listen to a lot of music, then buy a spare battery too. There's loads of music players to choose from (you aren't stuck with just one like the iPod) so you are bound to find one you like. You can't download podcasts or new music via 3G on the iPod either.
 
Discovering the subsonic app is one of those things that sent me running to my wife saying, "look what I can do."

For me, debating how to handle music, streaming was a no brainer. Access to all my music (100 gigs) anywhere in the world, and still have my storage space open for pictures, movies, apps, files etc. almost made me cry.

If you don't want to run the server on your home pc, or you don't have a good enough home connection, I've read of some companies that will host your music, a few gigs for free and 40 gigs for about ~5 bucks a month. Can't remember the name of the company, lifehacker had a post on it earlier this week.
 
I think it's nice to just carry around one device, I would probably get the card. How often do you really need 60 GB of music to listen too? And I know, I personally wouldn't die if that one song I wanted to listen to wasn't on my card.

As far as the other half of your question, I just put a JVC KD-R900 in my truck and it works awesome for streaming music - Slacker and phone calls. It sounds great. And as far as integrating into a stock deck check out Scosche Bluefusion kits. I am seriously thinking about getting one for my wife's Honda Pilot. It also integrates steering wheel control buttons.
