Is a black image akin to the screen being off?

I know that the phone itself will still be on and still be processing graphics data etc, but if I display a black image is that the same as being off as far as the sAMOLED display is concerned? I download large torrents with it since the phone kinda replaces a proper computer, but I'm paranoid about leaving the screen on the same thing (longevity concerns, mostly) which is necessary to keep it downloading at speed, and think that maybe if I leave it on black it won't matter.

When an AMOLED screen shows black, it turns of that pixel.

Yes and no. In theory, yes. In reality, no.

Take your GN into a closet and put a black image on screen. There is still light coming through.

That said, a black image will use far less energy to display than a bright one, but not quite the same as being OFF.
