Help Is enabling the "Camera Button" required??

Lurker
The hardware "Camera Button" on my phone (lower-right, below the Voice Dialer key) does absolutely nothing. Press, multi-press, press-and-hold, nothing. Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change to enable it, or do I send it back to Amazon for another one?

There is no setting for the two stage camera button that I know of. You can download a camera app that will allow you to use the camera. It would be a matter of finding the one you like the best.

Umm... isn't that button supposed to operate the camera? I can already use the camera using the touchscreen interface. Problem is, there's only a back-facing camera, so if I want to take a picture of myself, or myself and someone else, I need to be able to use that button.
Besides, if that button is supposed to control the phone, and does not, the phone is defective and I need to exchange it before my 30 days are up.

Let me rephrase the question—What is supposed to happen when that button is pressed?

The camera button is a 2 stage button. While you are in camera app pressing button half way will cause camera to focus. Pressing it fully in will take a picture. If you push it an hold it the camera app will open if you aren't in it already.

If phone is stock and button hasn't worked since you got phone I'd return it to place of purchase for exchange or call VM to have it replaced.

Thank you very much. That's what I needed to know. I'll retest it tonight, and if it still fails, I'll get back with Amazon about an exchange. Thanks again.

Just to clarify, the camera button only takes pictures if you're already inside of the camera app. It does nothing if you're at the home screen. If you're inside of the camera app then it should take a picture.

Actually, if you press it fully and hold it, at any time, it should open the camera app. This will work from the home screen or when you are running any other app.

Ah, OK. Thanks, everyone. First, I didn't realize the button was two-stage, so I was only pressing to the first detent. Nothing at all happens there, at least, not on my phone. ;-)

However, if the camera app is open, the button does act as a two-stage, focus-shoot button. And if the phone is on and unlocked, pressing to the second detent activates the camera/camcorder app from wherever you are, after which it must be released and pressed again to act as a two-stage button.

Thanks again! I'm on page 87 of the manual, and I still haven't found an explanation of this there...
