Root Is it Android ICS or the Motion that is bothering me?

HelgenX

Newbie
Since leaving behind my iPhone 4, I have been seriously disappointed with this phone. They are a lot of small things maybe, but they seriously affect my use with it to the point where I almost want to return it. I have it rooted and I feel there's still no answers to simple solutions with it being rooted, and I want to list them in bullet style so that way maybe there's something out there that one of you may know will help me like it better, maybe some app or tweak, here's some problems I have with it:

  • Can't set pin lock screen to disable for short amounts of time
  • the keyboard seems to not almost ever read correct button presses
  • the battery life literally drops before my eyes with rare usage
  • have no idea how to go forward in dolphin or chrome (no buttons)
  • cannot tether with ANY tether program for some reason
  • One time the phone glitched on me asking to delete contacts repeatedly

I think the battery life and the lock screen is the most annoying. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

I suspect it's a combination of things. The Apple-to-Android transition is a big change and it takes a while to adjust, I'd equate it with going from a Mac to a PC. There's a lot more user involvement needed if you want to have everything to your liking, and chances are there will be a few things that you won't be happy with.
Time will help you acclimate to a lot of it, and much of what you need can be found right here in these very forums. Take some time to read through the general Android sections as well as the Motion-specific stuff.
If the battery life is really that bad and you aren't using the phone constantly, there may be an actual problem with it. While few if any Android phones can be said to have stellar battery life, our experiences with the Motion have been that it is actually pretty decent in this regard, and there are tweaks to make it even better especially if you are rooted. Read the threads discussing battery life and try some of the suggestions, if nothing works you may need to return the phone and get it swapped out (or at least get a new battery).
Tethering can definitely be made to work, again do some reading.
Good luck.

I got tethering working with barnacle. Just clicked start and associate and I was online. As for the battery getting rid of all the bloatware did wonders. Check your battery usage and see what is using it. Also try another keyboard.

To go forward on chrome press the menu button and you'll see the arrows.
What exactly is your problem with the lock screen? I dont quite understand what you mean.
As for battery life, i turn off data when not in use it helps a lot.
Try another keyboard, I bought ics keyboard but there is a free version

Can't set pin lock screen to disable for short amounts of time

I'm not sure what this means.

the keyboard seems to not almost ever read correct button presses
That's because you're not hitting the right keys. I'm not trying to be facetious here, but the stock keyboard is very responsive. Also, I use Swype exclusively, so hitting the wrong keys is an issue that never comes up for me.

the battery life literally drops before my eyes with rare usage
This phone doesn't have the best battery life. It drains faster than my previous two Android phones (Optimus M and Optimus M+). With everything turned off and moderate usage, I can go two and a half to three days on a full charge.

My recommendation is to get rid of bloatware and turn off running processes. Also, turn off mobile data if you're not using it.

have no idea how to go forward in dolphin or chrome (no buttons)
To go forward in Dolphin Browser, use the gesture feature and input whatever the gesture is for forward. In Chrome, hit the menu button and the back and forward buttons will be on top.

cannot tether with ANY tether program for some reason
I've successfully tethered using Wifi Tether for Root Users, with the settings set to "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)" for Device-Profile and "Netd (master)" for Setup-Method.

One time the phone glitched on me asking to delete contacts repeatedly
I can't help you here since I've never come across or even heard of this glitch.

Hope this helps with your Motion 4G experience.

Thanks for the informative responses, guys. The thing I was saying about the lock screen timer is, and please forgive me for comparing, but on the iPhone, I could set up a pin lock, then set the time for it to actually enter the code instead of entering the code again immediately. Like if I set the timer to put in my pin for 1 hour and I could freely open it without the use of the pin again for the hour, it will leave the phone open till that hour is up then I will have to activate pin again. Can I do that?

let's go through this one at a time...to make it easier for you

Can't set pin lock screen to disable for short amounts of time

when do you want it to disable? and why would you?...if you want it to delay in locking then you go to the lock screen settings in System Settings.

the keyboard seems to not almost ever read correct button presses

download another keyboard, the LG keyboard is a bit weird...i personally like the Gingerbread keyboard or the ICS keyboard....i dunno though...try out a bunch of different ones, they are free

the battery life literally drops before my eyes with rare usage

go into the power saver section of the Settings...and all the stuff it suggests to do, change those settings manually so that you do not have to turn on/off power saver...it is much easier to switch stuff on temporarily than to switch everything off all the time..

also take a look at the Apps safe to remove thread and remove all the ones that are safe to remove, it will increase your battery life...Also any task killer or battery saver apps you have installed, uninstall them

have no idea how to go forward in dolphin or chrome (no buttons)

in Dolphin the buttons show up in the bottom left corner when you press on the screen and disappear shortly afterwards...in Chrome press the Menu button and at the top of the menu is a back and forward button

cannot tether with ANY tether program for some reason

there are several threads that discuss this, if you need some help please e-mail me and we'll go through it step by step

One time the phone glitched on me asking to delete contacts repeatedly

i have not heard of this happening before, it could have been an app...what were you doing when this happened?

anyways...i hope this helps, and like someone else mentioned....going from the iPhone to Android is a tough transition because they are not anywhere close to the same thing

this phone has phenomenal battery life...much better than the OM or the OM+...i do not know why you would say otherwise...there is proof from many many people in the threads on here that say that this phone is great with battery

and 2.5-3 days on one charge is amazing...i highly doubt that you actually get that much...but moderate usage is different from person to person..

Well he did said he got that long usage with everything turned off. Maybe he turned off all his radios. But then what is the point of having a smartphone with no connection?

I'm just going from my own experience. On the Optimus M, I got five days on a full charge. On the Optimus M+, I got four days on a full charge.

Well, to me there's no point in having data on when I'm not using the phone. I don't need constant updates throughout the day. If I want to check something I'll just turn the data on with a home screen widget.

Well, I thought you must have used airplane mode to get two days on one charge. Seems unreal to get that kind of battery life, I know I can't get anywhere near that with mine. I do use a data toggle widget too since I don't need data on all the time.

yeah i'm going to call BS on that...

On the Optimus M+, I got four days on a full charge.

and same with that

there is no possible way...unless you were turning your phone off when not using it...and also...not using it at all for anything...but even then on my OM i would maybe get 10 hours if i did nothing whatsoever

and even with turning off data you still have android OS, mediaserver and the screen turning on to drain the battery...

like i said, there is no possible way that you got 5 days on a charge on the OM or 4 day on the OM+
i could understand maybe 20 hours without using the phone ever.....but even the most minimal use on either of those phones drained the battery significantly...

anyway, i do not know why i am getting all uppity about this...i just do not like people making sh*t up that's pretty much all there is to it...so yeah...keep going on about your 5 days on a smartphone but even the RAZR MAXX doesn't last that long dude...so...yeah

my friend has droid maxx and it lasts for 10 days on one charge, it also used app solar charger to charge itself up. I've seen it myself, true story!

androids eat apples. The motion laughs at an apple, peels it, cores it, purees it and feeds it to the masses of the younger android community. who say " hey thanks but apples are to easy for me to bother with". my grandmother has froyo and the apple couldn't deal with her. can you say applesauce boooooommm android rips em to peaces.

The battery is NOT better than the Optimus M. This phone uses more power and has a battery with less capacity. If anything, it on par with...

There's no facts otherwise, just a bunch of enthusiastic opinions.

My real world experience also begs to differ. Using the Motion just like my Optimus, I get .7 days on a charge. Hardly phenomenal.

I've gone a little over two days and I still have 42 percent remaining. This isn't something I'm gloating about. It's something I'm complaining about. People think this is great, but I'm used to longer battery life, so it's a slight knock against the Motion 4G for me.

Great battery life.

I shot and uploaded 500MB of HD video this morning starting around 95%, which dropped to 40% after upload completed with good reception.

The battery life isn't phenomenal, but the HD video sure is. B-)

This is what they most likely do with their phones:
