Is it just me?

Is it just me or do others seem to get frustrated when someone comes into the forums "Needing" help you give them the best advice or help that you can and they never come back and post anything else again. Not even well that didn't work or hey thanks that did it. I mean nothing. No word what so ever. I'm not even sure why this bothers me still its happend several times but it still does. I just wanted to know if it bothers others as well or am I the only one? Don't get me wrong it doesn't bother me enough to make me stop helping but still it bothers me.

I can see how this can get a bit annoying to some people, and you might not feel like you're accomplishing anything and/or even wasting your time. However, when someone else has the same problem and stumbles upon that thread, and then joins our community because of that answer it's a great great thing. Some people are more patient than others, but keep up the good work. I assure you that your answers have had more of a positive impact than you think they do. :D

I don't find it annoying. I don't even pay attention to the threads I post in. I answer the member's question and move on. If they respond great, I'll get a notification and I'll reply back. If they don't *shrugs* I don't really care.

My definition of a trivial question would be like how to answer the phone - that's in the quick start manual. The Vulcan actually asked me that.

An uninteresting question would be one that has been asked many times before, and the OP didn't look or do a search.
I've seen two identical posts from different people with the same question almost next to each other with a 2 hour difference. The posts would be on the same page.

Sometimes Google is not your friend - how do you filter results on a search in this forum? I'll want the latest answers and will get replies from 2009. There doesn't seem to be any consistent way to figure out priority. I've put 2011 or 2012 in the query and it doesn't seem to matter.

Yeah, but realistically you can't expect people to just "do a search" either. People come here for help/advice, and that's what we offer. If someone has trouble putting music on their phone, chances are they aren't very technically inclined, and we can't expect everyone to be.

Just like I'm no mechanic, we can't expect everyone to be forum/search savvy , but we can help them to be. Everyone has to start somewhere, and at one point in time everyone is a "noob/neophyte/beginner" or whatever you feel like calling them.

Nobody starts out as an expert.

The great thing is nobody forces anybody to help, it's not a requirement. Those of us that help pretty much enjoy doing so. Androidforums provides an atmosphere where people aren't and should be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem rudimentary and quite basic to some people. ;):)

The general rule I know that the staff follow is that these members already search Google and found AndroidForums. It takes time to sign up and they did that. You got to give them credit for doing that much. So if they post and the question is already ask, the courteous thing to do is to help them by either answering their question or direct them to the threads with similar responses.

FWIW, I respect that this board has different policies than the one I serve as a Moderator on, and I was really being light-hearted when I said I get "annoyed" by vague thread titles, despite my rantiness (seriously, I'm a pretty ranty guy in general). More often I just skip over vaguely-titled threads entirely when posted here...if they can't be bothered to be more specific, I can't be bothered to try to assist them. :p

As far as questions that get asked repeatedly, I recommend a FAQ thread if one doesn't already exist. Beyond that, as on my board, I don't see anything wrong with a pleasantly-worded variant on "Search is your friend." followed by a link to a search result that actually is helpful. I take a dim view of people who claim that searching will work but don't post a link, as it seems inappropriate to point a user to searching without providing tangible evidence that it will help them.

Our site FAQ is located here, it covers how to search our forums - http://androidforums.com/faqs/511679-android-forums-faq.html

Staff doesn't set policy here, we implement the wishes of the site owner, Rob.

If you would like the attention of our admin, Phases, while proposing changes to how we work, then may I suggest -

Suggestion Box & Feedback - Android Forums

If you like to have some sort of round-table discussion with staff of your ideas, please ask for us at - http://androidforums.com/private-chat-staff/

We have strict policies of being newcomer and family friendly.

We don't care if people search or not, we have strict guidelines for what we allow in giving search advice in our site rules, and we really don't care if people repeat questions or make spelling or grammar errors.

Hope this helps! :)

I totally hear you. I always wonder if they got their problem fixed. By the time I've invested in answering, I'm sharing the concern and showing the love. :)

If it helps any, we generally find that for our helpful members, a ratio of total posts to thanked posts runs typically at somewhere around 3:1, I'm near that myself, fwiw.

I notice in your case that your ratio is well above that - over and above in fact - at a ratio of roughly 2:1.

You're doing something awfully right in showing the love as well, to which I must say, mega kudos and... :adore:

So, keep on keeping on and well done, compadre! :)

PS - Roze agrees with me, I know that. ;) :D

I've got some catching up to do haha. ;)

Although I was around before the thanks button was introduced :O

Well, you and Roze crack me on your iconoclastic numbers. Both always welcome and helpful, obviously.

I just like picking on her because she doesn't like thanking me because my numbers are warped. :D :D

No one answered the question I appended to the post:

I'd really like to know.

Does that help?

I feel sorry for those who are challenged and for those who really just want an answer and don't have time to filter through old threads that have no relevance to the actual problem they have even though there is some similarity's there. I love helping the new comers. I was once a new comer and because I was treated warmly and wasn't told well why didn't you do a search I felt like I was being treated by humans who were more concerned with relationships than they were with having me jump a bunch of hoops and hurdles. I've called this place home ever since and have been willing to jump in and help when ever I can.

Yeah, and in addition to the questioner, and the answerer, there are plenty of people who appreciate the topic being brought up, as we enjoy discussing our phones, even if it's the same subject over and over. I think I have posted in 5 Google Wallet threads, because I think it's such a cool feature.

And plus, people don't always know to trust an old answer. Maybe the software changed. Or maybe they need assurances from someone current for whatever reason.

I often do the search, and instead of a link, I'll copy / paste a quoted post, and say something like, "I looked around and this looks like it might answer your question, if you think so too, tap that button in quote after the name and it'll take you to that thread if you want to check it."

Wait, I thought you knew everything off the top of your head ;)

Really, unless you're very savvy with forums or Android use, expect these kind of questions. A lot of times these folks don't have much experience or are foreign and their English is poor so it takes some time to help them out. I always report threads to be moved to the respective forum if need be. We just want to make this the most respectful and helpful forum possible.

I think we have succeeded. :)

I think people mostly want to hear from someone that yes this works or no this don't work. Doesn't really matter how old or new the results of the search are. I think people trust people and not technology. Lets face it things change and that does make a difference, and if some one has had that experience then that is what they are going to base their opinions and fears on. I've done searches on things that were so far out of date that I couldn't believe there was nothing newer then again I've done searches and have been bombarded with so much information I really wasn't sure where to start. And of course my favourite is we were unable to find anything on the subject try your search again later.

yes. Yes, i do.

However, in order to know how it feels to rely on google search, i purposefully stopped knowing certain things so that i could enjoy the richness of the full search experience.

I don't recommend it highly, but the exercise was beneficial.

:d

lol. :d

Hm. I think this thread may be illustrating rather spectacularly why I often feel I get along better with machines than I do with people.

For myself I don't mind spending the time to search the forum/web for my answers, and I feel a bit of accomplishment when I'm able to find my answers. Of course, if I can't, I'm certainly not unwiling to post a thread, but I tend to think most tech-related problems that I run into have probably already been experienced by other people.

I'm probably going to sound like a bit of an ass here, and I'm not meaning to fault anyone and I apologize if this rubs anyone the wrong way, but sometimes it seems -to me- like some people are just being lazy and would rather start a new thread than spend thirty seconds doing any sort of research. Ironically they may spend more -time- writing their new post than they might have spent searching...

I guess it's a matter of perspective, and I do appreciate that the Phandroid folks emphasize being friendly and supportive and such.

On a related note, I have to admit I'm baffled both as a person and as a Moderator (not here!) by peoples' tendencies to overreact to Warnings and such. It seems no matter how politely you word such a thing, about 75% of people seem to flip out even if they're getting a Warning that carries no actual penalty and isn't likely to amount to anything as long as they're not planning to repeat whatever behavior led to the Warning in the first place. I dunno...I discussed it with one of my fellow admins some time ago, and both of us thought it was just silly. Even something like a 48-hour ban...I mean, it's not like you lose all access to a forum at that point, you're just restricted from posting, and it's only two days. I just don't see what the big deal is...maybe I'm just much more casual about my internet? To be fair, I've never been on the receiving end of such a thing either...

Lots of people would rather get an answer from another person than have to look thru who knows how many pages of threads to find a problem that may be related. It isn't necessarily lazy but a comfort thing...not to mention if they start a thread and need further support for the same issue they have a place to go where they have already gotten support

Well yeah, I get that. It's just a difference in approach to problem-solving. Both have their pros/cons.

The moderators here are quite reasonable. Most time, they will send a user an informal warning through a PM if the offence is their first and not severe. They then get a formal warning. If they don't heed that, they are put on a couple of days probation follow by a temporary ban and if they continue to disobey the rules, they get banned. This is of course, depending on what kind of offence the users did. Severe offences might go from probation ->temp ban ->ban. Unless you're a spammer, you get at least 2 warnings to correct your behaviour before you are ban.
