Root Is root worth it?

For me it has. I needed/wanted a tablet but really couldn't afford anything over $500 at the time i got the NC. I used Deeper-Blue's honeycomb flash rom to eMMC and it's been fast and works well for being a preview SDK. I've been reading a lot of posts on another board from users that love CM7.

If you've got a rooted phone you've got wifi tether and you are set. Only thing i'm having issues with is which document program to buy at this point.

with HC i bought touchdown exchange to check my email and calendar with because there is no calendar sync yet for HC.

I went back to HC because i was having issue getting wifi to work at my office with CM7

Yes i too feel it was worth it.
1) I now have all of the readers install that normally would require me to own there hardware aswell.
Kindle, Sony reader, Kobo, Zinii mags.

2) It now has become my only tool for forums, rss feeds and magazines.

3) Allso my quick email / websurfing, craigs, ebay, kijiji, amazon, shopping center.

Will never look back now.
Love my nook pad.
Current rom is CM7 test build 50.

Can you still access the nook apps, such as nook store and read the books you've purchased through b&n?
 
I love my rooted nook. I bought it knowing it would be rooted. And I am learning what I am doing so I can be more comfortable rooting my Dx.

How does rooting mess up the warranty?

Just to be clear, there are several "methods" to open up a Nook Color.

"Rooting" just enables access to certain parts of the file system that were unaccessable. The easiest way to root a NC is to use Autonooter, which not only roots the NC, but installs the Android Market and other applications. Think of it as a Windows install where you only have user access. Now you have administrator access, but nothing really looks changed, but you can get into a few menus you couldn't before.

Rooting a standard NC doesn't change how it looks, acts, or anything else, just that you now have access to the Android Market and can install programs and games. All current NC functionality works exactly the same. You can read books, still have the B&N instore reading, read to me books work fine, etc.

ROMing on the other hand entails writing a new OS. Think now you've just upgraded Windows XP with Windows 7, and you needed to wipe what was there and do a new install. That's exactly what a ROM is, installing a new OS. You lose all programs and settings that you had (stuff saved on your SD card is still there). But in return, you get a fully functioning OS that wasn't dumbed down for the NC. You do lose those B&N special features (you can still read books through the Nook Application), but you gain worlds better tablet functionality.

The choice is yours. Rooting makes the stock B&N Nook Color a better reader because you can do more, but ROMing makes the hardware a much better tablet.
 
i bought it ONLY with the intent of rooting. after root you can still get to all your b&n books. plus the amazon and google ones to.

i personally like the phiremod. easy and stable.
 
You forgot the best solution. Get a decent SD card and flash your ROM onto that. My Nook has CM7 on the SD Card. All nooks boot to the SD card first so it's like an old fasioned boot disk. If I wanna run stock Nook again I just eject the SD card(leaving it in the slot but unseated)reboot the nook and it boots normal Nook Color software. Then I push the card back down and close it, and Nook finds the card, so I can listen to music or watch videos from my card. :D
