Never had an iPhone but I think rooting is like jailbreaking. Unlocking (at least in my android world) is fixing it to use with any carrier. I think I read a post that you can get a sim card from T-Mo to use overseas. I've also seen post on the net that can tell you how to unlock but never tried it.

rooting is different than unlocking, not sure what that is in jailbreaking terms

you can unlock your phone by calling tmobile tech support and tell them you will be going international, you'll also need to insert your other sim card in order to bring up that option
