Is signal issue not a problem?

I was just doing some research and think I have narrowed it down to the Razr Maxx, Rezound, or Nexus. It seems like everywhere I read about problems with the Nexus not having that great of reception or call quality or losing signal more frequently than others or in areas where others get signal. Just browsing through this forum quickly, I don't see that mentioned much. So for those who own it or have used it and compared it to others, is the signal as good as the Razr or Rezound or anything else? Or do you just not care that much about it since the screen and ICS is so great?

Assuming your talking about vzw. Signal on the nexus isn't as good as my signal on my bionic was. I usually have 3-4 bars of 4g in a good 4g area. But inside the signal isn't as good as the bionic. Where I would get 3 or 4 inside with the bionic. I'll get 2 with the nexus. Still better than blurr and GB and all the bloatware

If comparing signal strength, it is best to use dBm rather than "bars" because bars are completely arbitrary.

I have the razr and nexus right now, both for about a week. The razr can keep a solid 4g connection everywhere I go. The nexus can keep it while im outside driving but seems to have a hard time indoors and can go long periods of time with a VERY weak 3g signal. I do like the nexus though and it seems the upcoming update should make the signal better.

Also, I. Never had a message pop up telling me that I couldn't make a call until the nexus, for what thats worth

Welcome to AF DM88. Actually there is a sub forum just for the VZW Galaxy Nexus. If you don't mind i will move this thread there now. You will get more feedback in there. You may cruise through that sub forum and find the info you're searching for as well. Thanks for visiting AF :)

to answer your question. The signal on my G Nex (according to dbm and the bars) flat out sucks. However i have yet to drop a call because of it and my call quality is more than acceptable for me.

Yup supposedly the way the Nexus/ICS displays bars is more accurate, and Verizon was thinking of changing it back to the way other phones do it since it looks better.

I am starting to wonder if it is not just signal strength, but also some sort of protocol for when the phone will switch over to 3G. If you want to see a battery drain fast, let it latch on to a poor LTE signal, and 2 hours later you are in need of a charger. I wonder if the GNex will force a transfer to 3G at a higher dBm than some of the other phones. My thunderbolt would get 4G signal at my desk, but it was constantly cycling, barely holding on to it, and the battery life was horrific while this was going on. My GNex won't connect to 4G at my desk, but I also avoid the associated battery drain. Nothing scientific to back up my theory mind you. Just some observations I have made.

That seems to be the gist of the first article I posted. That will improve as time goes on and they expand the network. I'm glad in the Pittsburgh area I don't have any issues except in kmown bad areas.

my nexus does have worse signal (dbm) than my thunderbolt did, however this was after 5 radio updates on my TB and 3 radio updates to my nexus.

the nexus is still pretty new, i expect radio updates and software updates to "cure" the signal issues.

with that said, i have had my data drop but that was on release radios, but i have never been in a situation where i could not get a signal...no matter how bad my "bars" looked.

and call quality seems just as good, if not better than my Thunderbolt, droid x, or original Droid was.

I'm glad you pointed out the Verizon thread for this phone so at least I am seeing some of these issues addressed. I am a little nervous about it though that I will get a decent one. I don't think I will miss ICS if I go with a Maxx over this since I have never even had an Gingerbread phone. But the screen on this sure is nice.

I've had no issues with "signal strength" - for me that means, my phone has been able to make calls, get mail, etc. in all the same places that my Blackberry did. I'm not too concerned whether I have 1 bar or 4 bars, as long as my phone functions, I'm happy and I've had no issues at all with getting a signal on my Nexus, in fact last week in a DC hotel conference room, the only people in the room who had functioning email were those of us who had Nexi.
