Help Is there a problem with my USB cable or something more?

I am running AOKP JB Build 1 and was trying to update to Build 4 the other day when I realized my laptop was not recognizing my phone. I had a second cable that I normally only use in my car charger. I tried this cable and everything is working fine.

Is it possible my first cable is somehow faulty when it comes to establishing the connection to a computer? The charging seems to work fine from a computer or wall outlet, it just doesn't register as a portable device.

Yes, I've run into cables that don't seem to work with my PC as well. The original that came with the GN always works fine though.

I've taken to only using the original cable with the GNex to PC. The standard cable I had used before, and still works fine with other MicroUSB devices didn't work from day 1 on the GNex.

Yes, all USB cables are supposed to be the same, but clearly there is something different that causes poor performance with other cables.

is it the OEM cable or a cheap third party? if not try it.
