Root Is this a reliable root website?

now scary alien i heard from others that you are pretty reliable.... Does rooting your phone make your battery ALOT better? I basically want iPhone battery life on my android.

You can do plenty of things to increase battery life without rooting. Only turning on WiFI/3G when needed and all that can help a lot. Not having it at full brightness all the time. You can usually save a lot of battery by turning off background sync. These are generic rules for any smartphone and not specifically yours. Some people want instant updates from every app they use (FB, Twitter, email, etc) and that will drain your battery quicker. Also, some apps will drain a lot of battery because of being poorly coded. It usually ends up being a decision between battery life and having everything (3g/WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS/etc.) left on all the time.

EDIT: TRIPLE NINJA'D... (I hear that is called DALEKED!) :D. This thread is hopping, and you are getting some great advice! Good luck XxventanaxX!

i appreciate everything everyone is doing to help me out!!! but heres a couple more questions. My friend is going to be doing this for me because he knows a lot about computers and how to do the techy stuff but just needs the links and stuff in order to properly do it. After rooting the phone what do I need to download to help the battery like you said. You said i need to download certain rom and stuff....

Another questions which is most likely a stupid question.... How do i turn off the 4g? Im so used to 3g so i wouldnt mind staying with 3g...

Another one. You said that certian applications even if I didnt open them will be running in the backround. I have stupid dating apps like okcupid, and chat room aps and sportscenter that always seemed to be open when I used the task killer. Do dating site apps using stay on and running?

Also how do i turn off all that auto stuff....

Also to everyone who is helping me out.... Thank you so much!!!!! I am such a noobie when it comes to the Android network because I am so used to the iPhone iOS and the iPhone its self that this just seems to be worse. I love the Android itself and the network and I really want it to work out. Thanks so much everyone. I am very thankful that you guys are helping out and encourgaing me to keep coming back to ask questions. Thanks again!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Menu > Settings > Accounts & sync settings, there are check boxes for background data and auto sync. (I use a custom ROM, but I think it is the same for all 2.3 based OS's, if it isn't there sorry for the wrong info).

I would recommend not using a task killer, because of the way that the Android OS is made, it actually makes your phone work harder when you do that. If you want more in depth info check out this post: http://androidforums.com/introductions/394907-kill-apps.html#post3073253

Thanks to all posters above & for the patience shown to noobs. I am a complete noob to this world, but just got a Captivate Slide and a friend of mine who has rooted several phones brought it up to me. After reading this thread and a few others, I'm not seeing much compelling reason to root my phone. I'm pretty happy with it, have reset the apps from my previous phone (beloved Moto Backflip, RIP) & it looks like from scary alien's other page specific to this phone, that there's not a lot out there that would necessitate me rooting it. Am I missing something? Any compelling reason that anyone can think of to do it at this point?

Thanks again for your patience and willingness to share your knowledge!

We're all friendly here (at least I don't know the the mod's, the folks in red, do to the meanies when we report them:D but they go away quick). Don't root because it is the thing to do, root because you need to or want to. Your phone is new right now, so you may not need to.

As you get more comfortable with it, you may find that one thing that would make it perfect only to find out you need to be rooted to accomplish it. You may then decide to go down the rabbit hole. I would recommend checking out the All Things Root subforum for your phone and see what others are doing. See if what they are accomplishing with root would make your phone better for you.

I also know you will see more than one, and probably many root guides. Don't be afraid to ask if one is right for you. We were all there at one point. Sometimes a step in a guide makes perfect sense to the author, but just doesn't to you. Fire up a new thread and you'll get the help that XxventanaxX got here. I know myself, and I may be speaking for many, are enthusiasts and enjoy talking about Android and helping out new adopters.

Lastly, I see this was your first post, so welcome to Android Forums!!:)

Thx pupkact!

OK, let me throw a couple of things out there and let me know if these are the kinds of things that you would tackle through rooting:

-The autocorrect function in the phone's e-mail program is kind of screwy. For example, when I type 'ive', instead of changing it to 'I've', it changes it to 'ivve'. I have no idea what the thinking is there, but would rooting allow me to tinker with the auto-correct rules?
-This phone has a physical keyboard (thus, the 'slide' part of the name). I'd like to reprogram a couple of the keys as hotlinks to e-mail, web browser, etc. Do you think that rooting would get me there?

Thanks again!

The above items being said, I realize that there might not be programs specific to those issues yet (the all things root subforum for this phone is as thin as I'd like to be), but are those the types of things in the realm of rooting?

You can load alternate soft keyboards (the touch screen one, not the physical) that have better prediction / auto-correct without rooting. I believe that the prediction / correction would carry through to the physical keyboard though. A few that come to FlexT9 which I use, SlideIT, and I am sure there are others. Just search for them in the market.

I definitely think you would need to root to remap physical buttons. There are non-root alternatives that would allow screen gestures to perform tasks (e.g. swipe a v shape on the screen to open voicemail). I don't use any of these myself so am not familiar with them. I've just seen them around. You may want to ask about that in the Application forum as I'm sure you'll get more visibility there.

Lastly, I may ask the mods to move our last couple of posts in this thread to a new thread in your phones forum, so it can be useful to others there with your question.
