Is This An Upgrade From Evo?

I'm sitting at 70% after 3 hours of fairly heavy use (browsing, posting, texting, running speed tests). I'm so used to plugging in every chance I get so I'm kind of out of touch how that compares, hah.

And count me in as one of the ones that purchased based on the processor. Of course I came from a Hero rather than an Evo ;)

This phone not having a front facing camera is the dealbreaker for me. I will wait for the next wave of phones since the Epic is still behind and all other carries have a new galaxy s phone so I will wait on that. Hoepfully it still has a keyboard. My epic does the job well enough now.

I do not think this is a upgrade. The Evo is a mans phone. I would say the Shift is a step down for girls maybe.

I have read comments like this quite a few times the last few days, just boggles my mind. Just wondering why people are comparing EVO/Shift phones as womens and mens? Why is there the need to think of the Shift as a feminine phone, and not manly enough for men to use?

That's a form of Evo humor and should be read with the friendliness intended. It's probably also a friendly challenge - is the Shift worthy of the Evo name?

I say, yes it is. It's got a smaller screen and lacks a front-facing camera and lacks the mighty kickstand (I use that all of the time, srsly) - and provides a hard qwerty in exchange.

My wife's going for it over the Evo because of hand size - but had the Shift not been capable enough, she'd have gone for the Evo.

If this had hit first, I'd bet a lot of Evo owners would be owning this phone already - me too, and I'm a manly man, prone to doing manly things with a phone, like... like... web browsing, taking pictures, emailing and texting and other manly phone things.

Our dog, a manly Rottweiller/Shepherd cross, sniffed the Shift and not only did his tail wag, his breath improved - in a manly way.

It's got the quality, it simply comes in a smaller package. For uncompromising big screens lovers, this is a step down - for those that don't care either way about a big screen or want a smaller phone for whatever reason, it's a shift...

Smaller packages are definately not manly. :D

We bought this phone as a third on our account. My wife and I both have an Evo. Since we are a family with no land line telephone, this will be considered a "kid's phone" or an emergency use phone when the wife and I are both away from home. Nevermind that 4 kids, ages between 12 and 4, all fight over who gets to play Angry Birds next.

I never thought of this as an upgrade, just another offering that was more attractive to me for what we use it for.

Coming from the Touch Pro, I probably would've got the EVO Shift over the EVO, if I had the choice. And as I had mentioned in another thread, I actually like the dark blue (my favorite color).

At the time that I upgraded to my EVO, I was a diehard physical QWERTY keyboard guy (primarily for business purposes), but ever since I got my EVO without the physical qwerty and I learned about SWYPE, I can't ever see myself going back to needing a physical qwerty keyboard ever again.

The Shift is a very nice phone. My cousin got one because he still prefers the physical qwerty, but until they come out with a phone that is just as thin as the EVO and also has a physical qwerty (closest comparison would be Droid or Droid 2), I'll be sticking with a non-physical keyboard phone for a long time.

Srsly - we gotta kill that meme where it applies to this phone, mmmk? I may be seeing what you're not - that that comment has occurred in a lot of forums around here comparing the two. It's 15 minutes of fame are kinda up.

I think the take away here is that it's not a lesser phone - just a great phone in another form factor.

Leaving out screen size, it lacks only the FFC and kickstand compared to the Evo while trading for a hard qwerty and price. If you replace its 2GB SD card for an 8gig one like the Evo, the price gap narrows a bit.

edit and PS - FINALLY - It's on the HTC site with full specs - http://www.htc.com/us/products/shift-sprint?view=1-1&sort=0#tech-specs

Seems to confirm that this little beastie has twice the rom of the Evo.

I think the phones are parallel to one another. The difference is personal preference. Do you want a big screen with virtual KB, or do you want a physical KB. Of course their are a couple other "minor" differences (i.e. FFC), but screen size and keyboard are the main ones. Neither is really GREATER than the other. Again, its all about what YOU prefer. They both seem pretty awesome.

I figured that it was humor, but at the same time I have read it so many times (and the comparisons only started last week!) it is not funny anymore, to me at least. Unfortunately I think we will be seeing these types of "humor" and comments for sometime as people try to decide what phone to go with. Afterall if going Android on Sprint is there another phone to consider besides the Evo's? :D

I do not think the Original Evo is an upgrade to this, nor the Shift a upgrade to the Evo. Two phones made for two different types of users. My wife is looking forward to an Evo simply for the larger screen - she is looking at it as an all in one device. Where I am looking forward to the Shift because I will be picking up a Xoom and do not need the larger screen.

^ True. I have an iPad for the large screen goodness, but then again it can't play Flash 10.1. Can't win them all I guess!

Time to sell the iPad then and move to Android :D

Best bet would be to sell it before the iPad2 is announced and Android 3.0 is released - so you might go without a larger screen for a short while, but imho it will be worth it in the end.

I'm hitting 43 hours with 14% battery left on my Shift. This phone rocks and is Faster than my Epic and is also faster than my sister and friends Evo in every way. You might think the smaller 800mhz is slower but I can assure you its not. I'm absolutely in love with this phone. If nobody believes me about the battery life I'll be taking screen shots once the phone gets down to around 5%.

but I have the Evo Shift for my Android goodness :p Honeycomb might change my mind about Android tablets, but for now the iPad is working well for me minus the 4.1 issues with jailbreaking. It's nice to have variety :)

Oh, I believe you, because I'm getting similar life with mine as well! This is also just with casual methods of power saving; nothing special. I always leave sync and gps on as well and only leave wi-fi on when using it.

I like the shift, actually seems like a more practical phone for handling business without all the "bling" (I do like my bling, but don't need it).

If I needed a phone strictly for business purposes, I would certainly have the shift, doesn't have any of the stuff you don't need and looks easy to handle and store. A working man's EVO if you will. The Evo cannot be replaced as my personal phone right now, but for an extra business phone, this would be much more user friendly and less cumbersome.

I'm glad Sprint didn't follow in Verizon's footsteps by updating their lineup with a device almost identical to a previous device. With the Shift they filled in a gaping hole in other carriers line up, a current HTC device with a physical keyboard for those that wanted Sense. I've had the Droid Incredible for a long time now, and Verizon then announces the Thunderbolt? It's just better Incredible and the Incredible is still an awesome device, I hit 1300+ with quadrant with it. So Verizon lost me to Sprint, I mean how many phones did they just announce and not a single one of them had a physical keyboard?

Evo vs. Evo Shift. It's all about what options fit you best. I really like the Evo but it's just too big and I want a keyboard. The Shift is smaller with a keyboard. Shift's 2nd gen processor makes it battle just as well and sometimes better. Proof is in the specs. As for it being a girl's phone, well I am a chick who keeps finding her Manly Man wanting to "borrow" it. Couldn't resist pointing that out...:D

Since the first commercial for Droid, I've been watching the development of Android phones from a longtime, loyal and lately bitter BB user perspective. The Shift sold me when others hadn't.

If the last 3 days are any indication, my laptop is going to miss me for a while.

yeah.. not an upgrade.. but a "shift".

it is another option for sprint clients.. that dont want the EPIC .. and dont want the EVO size.

fill in the gap between the 2 phones... I am sure they will come out soon.. for a 3.8" screen with no KB.

This is why I got my shift :)

Battery life is very good for me so far. I am coming from a Droid Incredible which I had a 1750 battery in and the Shift lasts quite a bit longer.
