No one is sure exactly what/who they are monitoring.
VZW probably could figure out who's tethering and who isn't.
The only thing we can tell you are the facts:
Yes, tethering for free is against the TOS you signed when you got your phone.
Yes, Verizon is making it harder to get working tether.
Yes, it still works on the latest gingerbread leaks even with the work that VZW has put in, if your settings are right and you're using the right APK.
No, not a single person has yet gotten any stop tethering or we'll charge you notices from Verizon.
No, there is almost no conceivable way they'll start charging people without giving them notice ahead of time to stop. That's what the other carriers did when they told people about the monitoring.
No, Verizon will not send a bunch of men in black coats to your front door to force you to stop.

But thanks for clearing up what i kinda already assumed. I just wanted to make sure with the new "news" and me being new the DX that nothing has changed since i was on the D1. Plus ive never been a big tether kind of guy.

didn't at&t just up and start charging people? They sent a little notice that said something along the lines of "Glad to see you're enjoying the tethering feature, we'll make sure to add it to your plan because you must have overlooked subscribing, we're sure you didn't intend to do anything against your TOS."

Back when I was with Sprint and had a Moment phone, there were tethering apps for it as well. The story I recall goes along the lines that when you tether your laptop to the phone it makes a unique IP address that is reported back to the mother base. This unique IP it the red flag that indicates unauthorized tethering without their plan.
I just dont do it. If and when they get pissed off enough to do something to you Im sure it will be expensive.

Yea, I saw the notification of the ip of the laptop i was using at the time. Im not going to go ballistic with it. But using it occassionly i will do. Like today for instance, I happened to have my laptop in the car, went on lunch, and tethered for abotu 5 mins to browse. I highly doubt thety come after me when theres users who charge big data on tethering.
Basically what happened is p3droid of teamblackhat, the guy who has gotten us most of the leaks prior to them coming out, opened up to everyone about a month or so ago how he has known since like christmas that verizon was using different methods to try to figure out who is tethering.
It was this whole dramatic thing, p3 got very upset about it and basically scared the crap out of the whole droid x community. Its one thing for just about anyone else to say it, but when p3 says something everyone listens.
Also he did say that even running custom roms is considered running "unapproved firmware" on the verizon network which they wern't to happy about, but nobody seems to care about that
Personally I wont tether but i think the whole thing was blown out of proportion because as of yet absolutely nothing has happened to anyone, were still waiting on the infamous third shoe to fall

good info Mac. But what do you know about the "new" news that google is acting on behlaf of "some carriers" to eliminate the download of tetheriing apps. --That says to me. THeres no way vwz can pinpoint each and every tether(er?) and charge them. So best way to slow it down is to take those free apps off the market.

So even though you only tether "a little bit" your not an abuser? Just because you only tether "a little bit" doesnt mean your not part of the problem and part of the reason why Verizon is cracking down. Its funny how people can qualify things to make it seem like its OK.
ATT gave them several weeks notice before they up and started charging. And the people had the option of stopping tethering after getting said notice, and those who did *were not charged*.
Damn near 100% sure VZW would do the same. Also, while I do appreciate P3Droid for his connections and getting us all the leaks, if you ever look over his tweets its pretty obvious the man loves the melodrama.
It's funny how people get all self rightous and pass judgement when there own house is probably far from perfect. Ever drive 60 in a 55? Ever share a song or two with a friend? Ever get an extra dollar or two back in change and think I'm not walking all the way back into the store, they won't miss it. Glass houses people...Glass houses.

You missed the point completely so I will spell it out for you to understand. Its not about if I do those things or not, its about if I do those things and then condem others for doing those same exact things. To borrow your analogy, the poster I quoted is saying that even though he/she is breaking the law by going 60 in a 55 its not OK for another person to go 65 in a 55. Understand now?

I didnt say it was legal since i tethered a lil bit. I meant that it was ok for me b/c there is a very slim chance that out of all the top data users on verizons network, my 5 random minutes on tether when im out w/ the laptop is not going to warrant any attempts to come out and find me.

I agree that you will not have your contract cancelled or your phone fried for tethering a few minutes. What will likely happen is that Verizon will send a notice to any person who uses unauthorized tethering even for a minute. The notice will be light-hearted, like ATT, but you will have to stop or they will add it to your plan. OR, they may include tethering as part of the metered plans that will find their way to us sooner rather than later. I doubt it though because the thing about tether is that you can share your connection with non VZW users. So others are getting VZW data but not paying a dime to them. Verizon hates it enough to give its own customers a break on price (as do the other carriers).

its theft of services no matter what carrier you use...there is no way to tell whether or not your specific carrier is doing anything to track people that tether...
