Root Is this free tethering?

My carrier is a company called Page Plus. They offer prepaid plans. I have unlimited talk, text, and data. As i said before, They do go through Verizon towers though.

I pay about the same as being on a contract ($125 a month) but with the added benefit of not having a monkey on my back.......lol

Since they are using Verizon towers, I suppose that Verizon has a lot of say in how much data usage that they will put up with. As for tethering, there is a good chance that you will not deal with the same backlash as the big carriers. What Verizon would be concerned about is Page Plus gulping their data, at which they would bitch to Page Plus to cut out the heavy data users or find a new partner. If that means cracking down on tethering, then they would have to do that.

I was assuming the same thing but I wanted to get some others opinions on this as well. Looks like we are all pretty much on the same page.

The charging for wireless tether thing always confused me. I have unlimited data...so my feelings are this....what does it matter if I'm using that data through my DX itself, or my wifi only Xoom? Perhaps the carriers should allow the user to run 1 personal device at a time through wireless tether if they are paying for unlimited data.

I don't think anybody disagrees on the fact that we should be able to use our "unlimited" data plan however we see fit. The fact of the matter is that we all agree to VZW's terms of service and that means we agree we won't tether. We have the choice to not sign that agreement if we don't like the rules that are set in the TOS.

umm... i disagree quite a bit with it actually, and others do as well.

It's been discussed to death, but just in case you're wondering, the argument FOR free tethering is: It's MY unlimited data, unlimited means UNLIMITED, I should be able to use it how I want.

The argument AGAINST free tethering (that I subscribe to) is: It's only unlimited because they're assuming you're using your phone, which at most will use a relatively small amount of data. If they thought you'd be using other devices which use much more data-- and take up more, actual bandwidth, which is a for realsies thing that costs them money-- they wouldn't have "unlimited" plans, at least not at the same price.

It's like tipping at a restaurant. The prices are lower because they expect you to tip the waitress. If they didn't expect you to tip, the cost of hiring servers would be reflected in the price of the food.

But.... we've discussed it to death, you decide what you want. No one's changing anyone's mind.

So basicly what sonofaresiii is saying is "unlimited" isn't unlimited in our carriers eyes. They actually have a cap on our monthly data usage. You gotta love their tos. They know just how to word it so they can screw you any way they see fit.

It's unlimited for your phone. They say so when you sign up for it.

Anyhow, my point was that no-- not everyone agrees that we SHOULD be able to tether for free. Not everyone agrees that this is a case of the carrier screwing us out of something they owe us. You may think that, and that's fine-- I'm well aware I'm not going to change your mind. But don't assume that's how everyone feels.

OK so what's their policy on tethering? It doesn't matter if they use VZ towers if your carrier allows it it ok.

No, its not like that at all...its unlimited data for authorized devices ie: your phone, and any other devices attached to that plan

haha! yeah right...Im POSITIVE that if they use VZW towers that VZW makes it very clear to them how they can and cannot use their network...

Maybe you missed the key part of the first sentence "however we see fit". The way you use your unlimited data plan is another example of "how you see fit" to use it. So what exactly are you disagreeing with? Or was your post made because you thought someone was putting words in your proverbial mouth and then you turned around and did the same thing.

WHAT!?...

you said that everyone thinks we should be able to use our unlimited plans "however we see fit"

he disagrees...

Thinking and doing are two different things. Either way he assumed I was talking about free tethering (as he specifically referred to in his post) and I was speaking more broadly than just free tethering. He chooses not to tether with a method that violates the TOS and that's how he sees fit. I also choose not to tether in a way that violates my TOS, I have a seperate data plan for each device that needs mobile broadband and that's the way I see fit to do it. Perhaps I need to word my posts in a way that conveys what I am trying to say. Never have been good at writing

but he doesnt thing you should be able to do as you please...

Haha I'm sure they do but that doesn't automatically make their tethering policy the same as Verizon's. Verizon doesn't restrict tethering because of bandwidth its because they want to sell you a plan for EVERY device you have. That doesn't mean his carrier thinks the same and may be more than happy to let him tether. Verizon sells them the bandwidth and they "resell" it how they see fit as long as its within the terms of their agreement with VZW. Which again doesn't make it necessarily the same.

So if I was him I'd check with my carrier.

Sorry if I was unclear, but no I don't think everyone should be able to use their data plans however they (we) see fit. I also don't think people should be able to use guns however they see fit, because I don't like getting shot.

That's... no.

Motorola builds phones with these features in them, We get excited about a feature and buy the phone, but then you find out your carrier, in most your cases Verizon, finds a way to jip you of said feature because they want to make more money off it.

Can you tether? sure you can. But at the end of the month Verizon is gonna say "you used x amount of data for tethering now pay up". You don't pay up and they cancel your service and tethering becomes the last thing you have to worry about. Their TOS is written to protect their bottom line not your freedom to-do.

Nuff said. So, how about those cubs?.......:p

These tethering analogies are just mind twisting. Anyway in an ideal world Verizon offers unlimited packages and it's true they should not have a say in how we choose to use that unlimited data. The hook is they have you sign their TOS to use their service. But to be honest, I tether occassionally as well(which ususally amounts to a grand total of < 10mb...less than a podcast download). I think Verizon doesn't care about 3g tethering. What they have done is place data caps on 4g devices. What happens when all their major phones move to 4g and you still have the free tethering users migrating to 4g phones. Big problem, lawsuits, etc... If you're on 3g I wouldn't worry about tethering, if you upgrade to 4g....then that's when that 3rd shoe will drop.
