Lurker
Firstly I would like to state that I have searched through threads, tutorials, manuals, etc. ~ for hours and hours and hours ~ prior to posting this one. So if you should decide to shout at me about not not first doing my research...may my heartbroken tears weigh heavy on your conscience for the rest of your days!
The phacts;
I have:
'virgin' Samsung Galaxy Prevail (never been rooted, flashed, modded, or otherwise f*ked with)
Gingerbread 2.2
Bought from Boost, May 2011
Long out of warranty
Still on Boost
Added 32gb micro sd card (before knowing that this would be more or less useless until getting phone rooted).
Cannot afford another phone at this time.
The problem(s);
Apparent bad mini usb port - will no longer charge;
After about 2 months of it charging sometimes, with some chargers, holding it just so, etc... it stopped charging altogether (yes, I have tried multiple cables, computers, etc.)
Also: for the last 3 or 4 months the phone 'beeped' constantly, which I 'solved' by just keeping volume and vibrate off all of the time and checking for calls, texts, emails, etc., every few minutes. It did this even when it said it was fully charged, so I assumed it was no longer able to fully receive signal.
Fix:
Bought 5 extra batteries(Samsung oem batteries...unless I was ripped off) and 2 wall chargers, and carry a stack of them around with me, which I switch out a couple times per day. This seemed to be working great for the last month or so, and also solved the beeping issue, until...
New problem;
Just after switching out batteries the other night I got the 'stuck on pulsing Samsung screen' thing, that I've now spent about 10 hours of my life reading up on, watching youtube tutorials, scanning forums...
(if it's of any help, just prior to switching batteries I was sending photos to my gmail account. The battery was all but dead, but I continued to send until I got an error message and they would no longer send)
Tried;
Removing/reinstalling battery. no change.
Rebooting. nothing.
Different battery. nix.
Different computer. Zzzzzz....
Clearing cache. nada.
Factory reset. @#*%
Cleaning mini usb port (with compressed air, needle, sharpened toothpick). boring...it wasn't even very dirty!
Pinching charger end with needle-nose pliers to create tighter fit. This did actually make it possible to get a connection for about 10 seconds ~ if I held it 'just so'.
I then tried following the 'Rooting the Prevail for Dummies' guide, in the hopes that by holding the mini usb cable 'just so', I might be able to keep it connected just long enough to download something. Hard to say what the results were, as it would say that 'it' was downloading, but then say that the 'device' had been disconnected...so I really don't know how much it was able to complete before disconnecting.
Every combination of buttons I could configure(what did I have to lose at this point..?). finally... phone unstuck.
Now, my question is;
Is there a way that I can now get this monster rooted if I cannot connect to pc, or is there a 'trick' to connecting that I've not yet been able to find...
Regards and eternally gratitude for any help leading to the revival and salvation of my Prevail (and/or any consoling last words...),
