Help Issue: Dismount/disappearing defect in the Included 8GB MicroSD?

Sounds promising. I have a spare 8GB card that I had in my HTC TP2. I formatted it and am using it now. Been 4 days and not a single problem. I think the problem is a bad batch of SD cards from SanDisk shipping in the EVOs. Sprint and RS and BB better be ready to replace them when the EVO goes on sale.

I'll be thrilled if that is all this turns out to be.

I switched cards with my Hero's 8GB and it seems fine EXCEPT that maybe once a day or so, the card starts running slow (checked by SD Card Speed Test app). A reboot fixes the speed. Makes me wonder if I don't reboot if it will eventually start failing again.

Interestingly enough, I have had issues with uploading images to Picasa where the images show up on Picasa with some corruption (jaggy grey bar at the bottom). Seems to only happen when the card is in the funky slow state. A reboot and reupload fixes it.

Now HERE'S where it gets even MORE interesting...the same thing is happening on my Hero! And I've updated my Hero to 2.1 and it has Sense on it as well.

I'm not saying these issues are necessarily related, but it's simply more data to figure out what may be wrong. Personally, I think it's a 2.1 software bug, probably with Sense.

Would be interested to see if anyone else sees what I am seeing...a slowdown of the SD card throughout the day. Basically, run SD Card Speed Test throughout the day and note down the numbers. For me, by the end of the day, it has a write speed of 1mb/s, and that's when I get Picasa upload issues.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Actually I too, saw the slowdown issues with my 8 gig card. I presumed it was related to the failures, but given your experiences, I'm now wondering if it is either related or a similar but distinctly different issue. Worth looking to a bit further.

What class is the card you're using right now? Class 2 or faster?

Is it possible to turn off Sense on the Evo? If so, can you turn it off for the day and check the card speed throughout the day and see if it declines around the same rate. I know, easy for me to say...but I don't have my Evo for another 36 hours!

If we replace the card would you guys recommend just going ahead and doing a full format on that card as well or should they be GTG?

Root cause of the issue has not been determined.

A full format does NOT solve the problem for everyone - myself and several others have done a full format and suffered subsequent failures.

I just got a new 16gig card and it's running fine so far. I would advise that at this point.

Please take the time to read the original thread in the Troubleshooting forum - we've covered everything exhaustively there.

what exactly is happening with the sd card, are you getting an error message on the Evo along the lines of "insufficient file permissions"? I'm just wondering because this is exactly what happened to me with my HTC Hero and it occurred not too long after disabling Sense.

If you read the thread - full formatting (at least for most) doesn't attain a working SD card.

All of your questions will be answered in the main thread.

aw damn. this reminds me of the stock messaging app issue with the hero that happened when it first got released. i will read through it tomorrow, i don't think i have the energy for pre-troubleshooting ATM

actually, that question was not answered regarding a possible common denominator of "disabling Sense", but it does sound like it was just a bad batch of cards. well, hopefully Sprint/Best Buy/RS will reimburse or replace those of us who bought one at their store if the card is defective.

Mea culpa - I misunderstood your question.

I have not disabled Sense and I don't believe anyone else has. Though it has not been a factor that I have been inquiring about.

I'm eager for root to be released, hopefully Friday, because that will allow me to access system logs and hopefully find out more information regarding these failures.

So what exactly did HTC do about the Hero problem; did they do an OTA update or did they offer to fix/replace your phone?

Some background: I full formatted the included card with SD Formatter last week and it worked for a few hours then went back to no permissions. This was after formatting the card using windows and formatting it on the phone to no avail.

(As a side note, when you say format you should note whether you formatted in the phone, used windows/mac to format, or used the official SD Formatter located here: SD Formatter 2.0 for SD/SDHC - SD Association. It might help pinpoint the issue.)

After I got the error again I used SD Formatter to format a spare 8gb card I had lying around (it's a kingston and not sandisk like the included one with the phone), and stuck it in the phone and it has not given me the error since (with me trying different things to force the error to come up).

So I just took the card that was originally in the phone and tried to see if I could get some sort of error in Windows with it to see if it was bad or defective or something. Formatted it, copied over 3 gigs of photos, moved various numbers of files, deleted the files, etc and everything seems fine. Ran checkdisk and every other disk checking utility I could think of and everything came out to be fine.

Put the card in my camera and had no issues.

Decided to put the card back into the phone, messed around and tried to get the error and believe it or not I could not get it to reproduce.. so I'm not sure what the issue could be. I'm still going with my SD card instead of the one that came with the phone.

One thing to note is that the way HTC did the SD slot is ridiculous. I need tweezers to pull the card out. And the battery cover isn't that great either.

I pre-orded the EVO from my local RS. After reading this thread yesterday, I decided to contact the store to see what they knew.

The associate told me that his manager attended a training session on this phone the previous day. He told me that the problem was with the fast speed that the phone processes information. The problem is not with the card, but with the phone itself.

He also told me that all the phones which were pre-ordered are from the same production. If you have a problem with the phone as described in this thread, he claims that new replacement phones will be offered beginning 18 days after tomorrow's release.

I am not a technical whiz, nor do I know that what I have been told is true. I just wanted to share this info and wondered if anyone else has been told this?
