issue with contacts and multiple numbers

I have multiple contacts on my phone that have numbers the person no longer uses. I obviously have no need for these numbers as well. When I view the actual contact I have the ability to "hide" the number that they no longer use but when I create a text message or go to call them, the number still shows up and this can be confusing. I was just wondering if anyone knew how to actually delete a contact number.

Have you tried editing the contact? When I have a friend who changes numbers I simply look him up in my contacts, long press on his name and enter 'edit contacts'. Then I scroll down and delete the obsolete number.
