Root Issues with Eris (root/MMS)

Hello,

I'm new to this forum. In the past I've had the Moto Droid, HTC Incredible and the Droid Bionic. All which were with Verizon. I rooted the Incredible and have done other stuff with them and have decent experience with Droids.

I decided that I didn't need to pay to have a droid phone anymore and got a basic prepaid phone. Eventually I got sick of not having a droid and my friend convinced me to try Revol Wireless. He switched to them from Verizon and gets unlimited Text/Talk/Data for 50 per month. And they have 3g all around my area. He also said he would give me his HTC Eris he isn't using and I could flash it to Revol. So I went for it.

Well I'm having a few issues with the phone. It works and all, but parts of it kind of don't work well. It seems it's a phone that doesn't take well to a Revol flash. I can receive pic messages, but can't send them. Also, many apps don't work if they are more than about 10mb large. It's also very slow and buggy in general (a lot of force closes, SMS errors etc).

I decided that perhaps rooting the phone to gingerbread would help out. I gave this a try. I had success all the way up to the very end, and the new OS didn't want to install. I decided I would restore the phone, then try it all over again. Well once I restored it, it stopped working. It seemed to undo the revol flash. And when I tried making a phone call, it would give me a generic Verizon error message. It seemed to be connecting back to Verizon, rather than Revol.

So my questions are, is it possible to root a phone that was flashed from Verizon to Revol? And if not, does anyone have advice for the issues I'm having with the phone? I searched all over for this specific issue, but couldn't find info anywhere. So any advice is GREATLY appreciated!

I'm considering spending the money to just go back to a big carrier and buy a brand new phone. I'm just in a position where I'd much rather not spend that kind of money.

Thanks everyone and sorry for the lengthy post.

Also, I would like to add that after the failed root attempt, I brought my phone to Revol and they reflashed it for me. So it's working again, I'm just back to square one.

I have never heard of Revol, and do not recall ever seeing a post about it before. It sounds like that there is an APN issue with the phone.

For the most part, as I recall, it is far easier to run a phone on an alternate carrier using a stock/Sense-based, Android 2.1 Eris than one flashed to a Cyanogen-based ROM.

I did some Googling and this post shows what you can try with the app APN Backup & Restore. Install that app from the market (here) and then try what is mentioned in this post (i.e., backup APNs, make a copy of the backup file on the SD card, edit the backup file. Go back into APN Backup and Restore, clear APN, restore APNs.) Perhaps that will do it?

It's possible that it may also work with a Gingerbread flash - just use that same backup file to clear and restore APNs using APN Backup and Restore (this time do not backup first), though I have no idea if that is true. However, if you rooted and have Amon_RA recovery on the Eris, you can do a Nandroid backup of the existing stock before installing the Gingerbread ROM so that you can always go back.

These should be the APN settings for Revol, hope this works, otherwise get back with me :)

Well it seems I'm not able to change the settings. I went to Messages>Settings>Connection Settings. And all of the Vzw default settings are there. Problem is, I'm not able to edit the settings. They're grayed out to where I can't click on them. I think there's an app where I can edit things. I'm a little confused though. I'm not terribly experienced with adjusting these particular types of settings. I've never had to since I've always used Vzw phones on the Vzw network, until now of course.

Thanks for all the quick replies thus far.

Look at my post above for a way to edit the APNs using APN Backup & Restore. Or have you tried that?

I'm working on it now. I'm not sure how to edit the backup file once it's on the SD card. Is this something I should be doing from a PC?

I also just downloaded HTC Sync, hoping to be able to access my SD card by hooking my phone up to the PC by USB.

Yes, this is probably the easiest way. Make sure that you edit with Notepad, or something that keeps the format plain text.

I think that Astro File Manager has an integrated text editor, if you want to edit on the device, but that's obviously harder. Doable, but harder.
