Lol yeah i just love bein able to use the word "fanny" on a public forum. Differences in language can be fun sometimes :D
Did you catch the "fanny" irn-bru adverts mate?

"Made in Scotland from girders"?..nah we don't see many of them on China Central Television. :D

Yeh differences can mean a lot, I mean ****** is a meatball in the West Country.

Some drawings of the packaging, but more importantly, a couple photos of the motherboard and revelation that it will have a dual flash.

I wonder how nuch publicity OnePlus are going to give it, like running ads when it launches. I've still not seen anything about it in Chinese media, no hype or anything. And probably very important in their home country, will China Unicom & China Mobile be selling in their stores.

Yeah if I wasn't a geek I'd never have heard of it. I'm guessing it's only geeks they're aiming at but is there any money in that market?

Tech geeks are not the majority of people. Think many regular phone users like my father and sister would come to sites like AF when they have a problem with their own phones, and not to discuss new phones.

I know what's been happening this week in China, Samsung have just launched the S5 and China Unicom have gone gaga over that with high profile in-store promotions and window displays. China Mobile are still gaga over the iPhone, because they only just recently started selling it. And Oppo are currently running endless TV adverts for their new Find 7. Apart from that, anyone else is just another smartphone in an extremely saturated and very noisy market.

For OnePlus to be a success in the UK or US, they've got to get in with the carriers. If people can't buy it at say Carphone Warehouse, they're not going to know about it.

Maybe this thing isn't aimed at China.

cheap "high-end" phone .. made in china.. but not marketed to china (the huge and growing market). I guess that could be possible.

Same market nexus devices are targeted at. And those have been getting more and more popular ;)

nexus does have a lot of marketing behind it. not huge like Samsung marketing.. but some.
carriers want it on their line-up.

It's marketed and should be available in China. http://www.oneplus.cn/ It's a huge and growing market, but it's also an extremely saturated market as well, with a heck of a lot of companies and brands. Think unless you're the likes of Samsung or Apple, or can make a lot of noise, e.g. high profile TV and internet advertising or viral marketing, which is what Oppo are currently doing with their new Find 7. No one is really going to pay much attention to you.

Yes it does, every time go into Google Play, there it is "Pick Your Color" :D ...you don't have to be a geek to know about Nexus. I know in the UK can buy it from places like Currys and Argos, high street retailers that are not affiliated to any carriers either.

Xiaomi is a fairly new Chinese company that's being having a lot of success in their home market, and overseas as well AFAICT. Their software products has been discussed here on AF from time to time, the MIUI ROM and MiHome launcher. Those were things that came out even before they launched a phone of their own, and have been quite popular, especially MiHome. The founder of OnePlus is ex-Oppo isn't he? Maybe that's got something going for them

Here's my take on it.

First OnePlus One targets the enthusiasts like us. They're smart enough to know that we will eagerly spread the word. Considering most of us are the "go to" guys and gals in our families, friends and co-workers, our word of mouth is powerful and pervasive.

Second they now expand their target market by employing more conventional advertising. I welcome this approach, it's going to be quite effective.

this is an interesting theory.

but I am not sure if a company .. would risk it on this type of marketing only.
then need to move many units fast! we all know how fast a top phone becomes old news.. 6 months from release!

they need to make sales and profit quick.

Yeah a company like Google can afford to take a gamble on something becoming an earner in the future but you need a LOT of money behind you to do that.
They obviously got the investors though so who knows

The thing to remember is that it took a few years for the Nexus to get mainstream. The Nexus One really was a geek's phone, and the Nexus S. Here in the UK you could find the Galaxy Nexus in some stores (but not IIRC the Play Store). It was really only the N4 and N5 that began to have any serious presence, and I think the Play Store channel plus the size of Android were probably key there.

The gnex was the 1st I ever saw in a shop and even then, it was only because I asked if they had it. It wasn't on display

This looks like an impressive piece of phone. I'd hope some of this tech filters down to less expensive devices. Not all of us on the planet can afford such pricey toys, but I admire the thing for what it is.

Eventually, I'd love to get a phone that can be used internationally without relying on WiFi and VoIP or a phone rental when I'm out of the country (which has been a while for me). I just scored a LG Optimus F3, and am planning to root it soon. No chance for CM on it, but I've had that on other phones (LG Optimus V... a couple of guys hacked up a slim version of CM11 KitKat for that phone).

And they are:

  9. Taiwan
  10. Portugal
  11. Italy
  12. France

China is conspicuously missing.

No Cambodia either. :p

I would suspect that OnePlus are not really going for emerging markets. I still think they would have a difficult time to make any headway in their own country, which a growing market, but it's also a very saturated market. Mostly mid-range and budget Chinese phones, along with Samsung and Apple for those with the money.

This. No marketing in America, either. No way this thing will ever turn a profit.
