I've just sent an e-mail to HTC

Most people are really happy with the HD. I'm one of them so obviously can't help you :-p

I find it incredibly fast. It has every app I need. I can run music to my TV from it, access my laptop, send emails, watch TV, listen to webcasts, play games, and customise it beyond anything you can do on an ip4 or Bold. I'll stick with the DHD thanks.

Obviously not all within the same day or you wouldn't get past lunch time with the phone. Haha. ;)

Great, you can customise touchable shortcuts and widget on the home screen. You can't customise the physical buttons which you can on the Bold at least. Probably one of the most important customisation features you can get.

I hope HTC does something about the weak volume through the earphones. That is also my concern. I tried using the DHD's stock earphones with my iphone and it sounds great, loud without distortion. So the earphones are alright, it's the phone thats the problem.

The widgets in android phones are amazing but I had to deactivate auto-syncing on them to save battery life. So the widgets become useless.

Come on HTC! Don't make me go back to using an iphone!

I'm glad in the comfort that I'm not the only one who is having issues. To be honest, if most users of the Desire HD are Desire users or used other HTC handsets before, I understand as it probably is a big improvement. However, coming from pretty well polished handsets is a big disappointment I think. Each to their own though!

well I am in india, and my DHD is unlocked, and no one as I know in india have reported this problem yet

so yeah...why dont u try doing a factory reset once

to add on to this, I use to have galaxy s, but I find DHD is much louder in headphones, in SGS I have to make it 100% volume but here it becomes too loud even with 70%

and quality with dolby on is simply awesome

b) Haven’t used a decent phone in the past
c) Don’t listen to music on it/don’t use the camera/have a charger with them for the day

I don’t expect support in this thread or anything as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I’m just putting this out there for people to read.

I've had some of the best phones available over the last 5 years thanks. I buy sim free so if its a dog I'd sell it. I don't need to convince myself its great. I had the desire before this and went to the HD cos of the spec and alternative crap on the market meant nothing else suited me. I sit at a desk most of the day so if battery needs a charge it gets it. As it lasts a day and a half with regular use I dont find a problem. There are apps that help with battery management. If you set the phone up sensibly it will last. How long does your laptop last off charge??? Like most phones of this ilk, they don't last an entire weekend like phones of yesteryear did with smaller screens, less power, poor ui's etc etc

You will have a return period on the phone. If you dont like it just return it. Or unlock it (if locked) and sell it. Theres a good 2nd hand market after all.

A few users moaning on this forum (which is where you would go with issues after all) really doesn't reflect the number of users who are happy with the HD. There must be tens of thousands out there now?

Use the search function, look around for solutions and learn about the phone. It will do what you want.

If you wanted more customisation than the Android system/Desire offers, isn't that your fault for not doing research...:p

Ahhh you had a Desire before this, that would explain it. ;)

There are apps that HELP with battery management but you have to PAY for them. Well, to get the most features out of them. Pretty ridiculous scenario when you look at it really. I don't think that's quite acceptable, but then again those (like you) who are use to this obviously don't see a problem.

I think comparing the battery life of what is essentially a mobile phone with a personal computer is a pretty silly comparison. That would be like comparing the MPG of a fighter jet to a Ferrari. You have to really reduce the phone's features to give it the battery to get through a day and even then you're thinking, hmmm should I really play this game? Should I be browsing the web...?

I get my phone upgrades from a shop that my family have used for many, many years. Unfortunately the shop isn't just around the corner so I usually get the phones posted. I had read a ton of reviews of this phone, the ip4 (which I really didn't want as I've used friends before and I just do not like it) and the couple of new BB's that are out. Everything seemed to be pointing towards the DHD so I did get it on the strength of a few reviews. My bad, I should have gone to a local shop and tested them all out.

To be perfectly honest I really wish I had stuck with my original decision in going for a BB Torch or 9800. I will see what happens over the next few days. I'm willing to give HTC a chance but so far I'm so disappointed. At first I enjoyed it as it was a new toy, but just the basic, basic stuff it really struggles with IMO. There are some serious flaws for what I use the phone for.

I would be interested to know of those who like/dislike the phone on what previous phones they've come from using.

How is it a silly comparison?!?! You expect a large screen to be powered by a small battery to be significant....Its a compromise of weight, form factor, performance, screen quality etc etc. My 17" laptop lasts 1.5-2 hrs max. My netbook lasts 5 hours. Horses for courses.

No phone lasts anywhere near to the standby hours that are advertised.

Try Green Power Lite. Its free and is very useful in extending the battery.

Buy a usb charger and charge it off your laptop at work (if you use one). Buy a bigger battery - I think Mugen do one.

Over the last 5 years some of the phones I've had (the ones I remember) :
N95 (one of the best early smarts), N96 (a dog of a phone), another Nokia that followed the N96 but can't remember its name, SE W595, SE C901, Blackberry (stupid ickle keys - lasted about a week), some LG thing, ip3 (ergh), Nokia N900, Desire, Desire HD.

EVERY single one of these the battery lasted until tea time with heavy use. Every one of these had problems. The N96 was a flagship of Nokia when released but it was hideous. Slow, poor ui, unreliable reception.

The HD isn't 100% far from it. But it allows me to email, use te web to bank, order goods and run my life when away from a computer (always my first choice - I wouldn't use the HD to go online at home), entertain myself, listen to tunes through my TV(awesome) and car stereo, access my camera at home, watch tv, set programmes to record blah blah what else could I want? A better battery...yeah without doubt. But I have learnt to live with the capacity I have in modern devices. Not amazing but considering what I can do on a phone now, I am happy.

Hope you find solace in your device one day :D

Just out of interest, what Blackberry did you have? My Bold 9700 would probably last 1.5-2 days on heavy use, that's with e-mail push, fb, twitter etc notifications being pushed to me in real time, listening to music in the car on the way to work (1 hour+) and in the gym after work (1 hour), web surfing and playing games when on the toilet (haha, only time I play them!). Okay, it's not a touchscreen, it doesn't have a huge display, but it has a decent screen resolution and plenty big enough for the apps I use.

I've had a word with the guy at my phone shop, going to call him later and hopefully I'll be able to replace my handset this weekend.

I think my problem is I don't make full use of the screen. I have a TV app for watching live TV but the only time I'd use it is when I'm shopping with the girlfriend, on the train or something but then I'll worry about my battery dying which it inevitably would. I could also do without having a full touch phone. I like to have physical keys - I don't see the point of full touch other than it makes a) web surfing easier and b) gives you more gaming options. These are 2 points that are NOT a priority for me. My priorities are having a phone that gets through a day or 2 (we've all been on a night out or somewhere where we don't have access to a charger for a couple of days), has decent music, I'm able to get messaging (3 x e-mail accounts, bbm, facebook and twitter) in real time (pushed to me when they're received), decent camera and apps for office tool editing which is useful for e-mail attachments when you don't have access to a computer.

Of course there are other things I use the phone for too, but they're the main ones off the top of my head.

Another thing is that these full touch phones require is being much more delicate with. Other phones, like my old BB's held up well without cases, being dropped and so on - I'm super paranoid about the large touch screen being scratched but I refuse to use a horrible plastic screen cover (which again, I would have to buy regardless of how cheap it is).

But you know, it is all horses for courses like you say.

If/when I do get rid of this phone, there are a couple of things which I will miss. The customisation is pretty neat, the ergonimic feel of the phone is great (I use a case so I don't get to appreciate it much but I do like the feel, weight and size of it) and of course it doesn't use BIS which I have had problems with in the past.

I really wanted to love this phone but I just can't. I think there are too many faults with it and drawbacks and things which I took for granted on my old phone (which is 18 month or 2 year old technology) that the Desire HD simply is not capable of.

Sorry to hear you feel this way. There are also a lot of plus points to this phone which I love. And then again like every phone it isn't perfect. I did research a lot of this online prior to purchasing this phone so I knew what to expect, compared it to my lifestyle and then chose the phone that best matched to it so am happy with it. Guess the ground work and a little reading up went a long distance.

I'm curious to know if you are referring to the phone in it's immediate unboxed state or have you looked around for the many tweaks available for it to solve many of the issues you noted and then are posting that it is unsatisfactory (as you haven't mentioned them)

Regarding the camera there's this amazing thread and the quality of the photos shown on there are representative of the kind of quality you can get on this phone. I was having issues initially as well but looks like a lot have workarounds to it.
Take a look.

Regarding the battery there is this thread. A ton of reliable experienced users have noted that the method does work and it helps to a great extent. Do not expect magic of course and bear in mind the kind of giant screen it has to support from that little battery.
Official response from HTC RE: How to double battery Life (WORKS!) + 2nd Reply - xda-developers

The speakers are really crap but I've heard that changing the sound enhancement settings help to a great extent.
See this for some more info -this all about how crappy the speakers are and if there are any workarounds to it. IMHO, this is one place where the DHD has really sank but hope comes in the form of it might just be a software glitch as there are mixed reviews and the next OTA update will improve on this (hopefully)
video on how terrible the speaker is - xda-developers

Moreover a lot of people have reported that the OTA update that recently came out solved a lot of the problems that you have mentioned however there were a couple of bugs in the update so HTC pulled it down. It shouldn't be too long when we get another update that does indeed address the battery & camera issues to a great extent along with many others.

In general there is also this thread that has a compilation of know DHD issues along with their current status: SOLVED/UNSOLVED/RECENT/In Development, etc.
[READ before asking!] Compilation of DHD ISSUES - xda-developers

And a quick note - it's not that the unit owners will blindly back up a device cos they spent money on it and HAVE to convince themselves. Many people on here made calculated informed decisions to invest into the phone, understanding its caveats as well as the pros and like every single phone out there, will look at constructive solutions and development to strengthen that investment. Nothing else.

Cheers and really hope you enjoy your DHD someday.

AndroidFreud; do you know of a problem with music being way too quiet with headphones plugged in? On full volume it sounds like it

Hi there,

I recently upgraded to a HTC Desire HD and although I’m still getting use to the phone I am very disappointed. I will touch on the battery issue in a bit, but my main gripe with such a modern, apparently ‘cutting edge’ smartphone is the really shoddy MP3 player. I use my mobile phones for music, travelling around on the tube and also in the gym. My previous Blackberry Bold was pretty awesome – great sound, great player, no problems. However, the sound through the headphones on the Desire HD is really poor. It’s very quiet even at max volume and the bass/treble are awful. If I try and alter the gain to get a louder output it distorts something chronic. Is there ANYTHING I can do to improve the MP3 player at all? Or am I stuck with it being a really poor music device? Not really good enough when Sony Ericsson have been knocking out great MP3 players on their phones for years.

Try a diffrent mp3 play app from market, might just help

Secondly, customisable keys. Why is this not an option!? On my Bold I was able to adjust the physical keys on the side of the phone to pretty much any action I wanted. Unfortunately when holding the Desire HD, you end up accidentally pressing the volume keys on the side of the phone and adjusting the already quiet ‘loud’speaker is inconvenient to say the least.

customisable keys would have been good but you can customis the screen which am sure is good enough

The camera. First of all, it should have a lens cover as it sticks out from the back of the phone and is in an ideal position to be scratched. How on earth R&D managed to get this passed is a joke. Regardless of this poor design feature, the camera is again, lacking behind competition. I don’t care if it has 8mp (like it does!) or 80mp, it’s almost impossible to take a still picture on this phone and the general picture quality (esp in low, indoors light) is terrible.

not seen any phone that does good pics, to be honist if you want good pics mate you need a real camera, no phone will give you good enough pics, well no phone i have come accorss yet any way

Now, the biggest problem you’ve most probably been having emails about is the battery life. IT IS REALLY THAT BAD. What is the point in having a lovely large screen (one of very few positives about the phone) when you have to reduce the brightness to around 30% to make the battery last until the mid afternoon? The phone has many features, which, if you use, will drain the battery within a couple of hours. So what’s the point? GPS for example, what’s the point?

I get 24 ++ hours on the phone from one charge and I am a med level user,

regarding the gps comment, I own a tom tom nav system, let me tell u something, I cant use it for very long unless its on charge because the battery dies, the same applies to the phone, you cant expect it to do what it does plus give you extra long hours on navigation :S

It’s a ridiculously underpowered battery that really didn’t get enough thought when designing a phone with some many features. It is just incredible that again, something like this is overlooked. I just don’t understand HTC’s logic behind this.

cant comment as I have never had an issue with battery
