Have you considered an exchange? If you aren't in a weak signal area and your 3G signal strength is a lot lower than other 3G phones, I would consider an exchange rather than a complaint because to me that is unacceptable and not normal. I compared my nexus and he display nexus in the store with every other display phone in the store for 3g strength and LTE speeds and they all read the same. I actually did this on 2 different visits because I'm obsessed. I've compared to my husband's thunderbolt in all kinds of conditions and my friend's Razr and Rezound because he has both and even in weaker areas we all read similar 3G strengths. Even in weak areas my phone doesn't get hot. Sounds like you may need a swap if you are considering an exodus before the 15th.
As for my battery, I've done tests overnight in airplane, LTE and WiFi and had as low as 1-2.5% per hour battery drain depending on the test condition. I did have google sync turned off though, so i should do the tests again with that enabled. Maybe my battery is working as it should and I'm just paranoid.
Been back at work and haven't had much chance to read forums but appreciate the reply. One aspect of any forum is the genuine sharing of information and willingness to help one another. This thread and others helped me view my phone logically and objectively.
I truly loved the phone, ICS, the large screen etc. I don't think my phone was defective else a swap would have happened. The warm battery I think was largely due to it searching for a signal. This while on a nice 4 lane highway and we had a Droid global in the car which had no 3G issues. But the measured dbm on both phones was greatly different.
In the Verizon store my nexus was within 10 db of the razr and rezound (3G and 4G modes). Still, it was always the lowest but it matched their nexus pretty closely. There is always the possibility of a simple QC issue where some phones are just better. Doubtful but possible.
I returned my Nexus Sunday and exchanged it for a Rezound. My overall impressions thus far as (a) I like the Nexus phone better in terms of the screen size, the OS, and just the display in general (b) other than that the rezound is far better than was my nexus around home, at work, etc. At work my rezound can connect via 3G while the nexus at best was doing 1X. Around town I am holding 4G in areas I could only get 3G with the nexus. My readings in 4G are about 18-20 dbm better with the rezound, same in 3G only mode.
I disconnect my battery (extended) at 430 Am go to work and leave work around 430 PM and my battery is still about 65%. My Nexus would get close to dying with extended battery after about 8 hours at work. Obviously a spare charger fixes this issue, just an observed difference.
I will never bash the Nexus.. I really tried har dot keep it but for my specific needs/wants I just could not risk living with it for 2 years and having bad signla issues. Always a chance Verizon improves their network and perhaps software changes will fix it. I hope so. And am sure for many people the Gnex will work perfectly fine.
Good news for me is Verizon dropped the Rezound price by $100 this week and I called and they gave me the discount. My final price for the Rezound was $149 which makes me happy.
I do think the ReZound feels more plain. The Gnex is just a more eye grabbing phone in size shape and screen display, least to my eyes. wish I had measured my screen dimensions while I had it, specifically the length x width subtracting out the button area at bottom. I'm not sure it is that much larger than the ReZound but it just seems like it was bigger. i know it is wider. For now I don't miss the signal paranoia I was starting to have! Am i conected now? Am i conected now?
Again am not trashing the phone.. I really love the Gnex. I could have gotten past the battery issue via chargers but the loss of signals constantly was what I couldn't live with. It may just be where I live or even phone I had. Just know my ReZound isn't having those issues... it just doesn't quite have the eye candy the gnex has!
