Help Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide

how long it should take on Leave CS msg??may be i'm in a hurry to get JB.. :)

I'm not sure that I understand your question Arsl88. What are you trying to do, exactly?

UPDATE I think you mean flashing via Odin. The whole process should take about 10 min's. See the video in the link in #1.7.

Thanks to the Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide I am often asked about when such-and-such an operator will release Jelly Bean, particularly for the UK.

Two companies... well, one really, are conspicuous by their absence in the list of Jelly Bean updates for the UK.

Those two are Orange UK and T-Mobile UK, now known collectively as EE, (Everything Everywhere).

These are the only 2 UK carriers who have not released an update to Jelly Bean, Android 4.1.2.

Below is a brief history of UK, Jelly Bean, releases together with worldwide Jelly Bean releases to-date for Orange and T-Mobile. This shows that Orange and T-Mobile effectively ceased support for the Samsung Galaxy S2, GT-i9100, nearly 4 months ago or 22 months after its UK release, whilst other carriers continued to support it. It should also be noted that Orange and T-Mobile have released Jelly Bean in other countries and have released it for the GT-i9100P variant in the UK.

Key Jelly Bean, Android 4.1.2, release dates for the Galaxy S2...

Leaked, unofficial JB firmware release = Nov: 2012

Official JB rollout commences = 23 Jan: 2013

Official Vodafone UK release = 7 Mar: 2013

Official Orange UK & T-Mobile UK update release for ICS, Android 4.0.4 = 14 Mar: 2013 ???

Official Three network UK release = 21 Mar: 2013

Official O2 UK release = 10 Apr: 2013

Official, unbranded, UK firmware release = 10 May 2013

Official Orange UK update to JB for the P, (NFC), variant Galaxy S2 = 21 May 2013

Official CarPhoneWarehouse UK release = 5 Jun: 2013

Official Orange UK further update to JB for the P, (NFC), variant Galaxy S2 = 4 Jul: 2013

Worldwide Orange Jelly Bean, Android 4.1.2, releases...

Israel = 18 Feb 2013

Dominican Republic = 7 Mar: 2013

Romania = 8 Apr: 2013

France = 23 May 2013

Austria = 27 May 2013

Poland = 27 May 2013

Spain = 27 May 2013

Worldwide T-Mobile Jelly Bean, Android 4.1.2, releases...

Croatia = 3 May 2013

Netherlands = 7 May 2013

Czech Rep: = 15 May 2013

It would appear that anyone contacting Customer Support are still being given the runaround and told that there will be a release for Jelly Bean or that it is being released by IMEI numbers, (???), or that a mysterious leaked email confirms its release.

Make no mistake... this is not down to Google or Samsung. This is a decision made by Orange/T-Mobile/EE.

Just like to say had a rock solid, only a few apps, non-rooted S2 I9100 running JB and upgraded via KIES, because it told me to and I didn't know any better. Battery life was toasted after the upgrade.

Factory reset failed to resolve. But using ODIN and all that pain and time worked. Now superb battery life and everything cool.

Listen to Ironass! Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums gruff2! :)

Good to hear that you have got your phone sorted out. Jelly Bean is a lot more battery friendly than Gingerbread or ICS when installed correctly.

I knew from the outset, after the posts from the ICS update, that with the change in the file setup in JB that there would be some problems. Hence my tip in #1.2 and my reference to the Firmware update problems... what you can do! which begins...

I have personally used a number of the ICS ROM's, LPS, LP7, LP8, LPD, LPF, LPG and LPI, LPY and LPZ and the new Jelly Bean firmwares, LS8, LSD, LSE, LSJ, MS1, LSN, LSS and LSW and they are all stable and work well. So it's no good blaming the firmware itself I'm afraid.

and ends with...

As I said, this may seem a lot of hassle but the alternatives are:-

1. Put up with your phone the way that it is.

2. Take it to a Samsung Service Point and get them to re-flash it for you... in which case you will lose everything anyway.

3. Re-install your old firmware using Odin, which may not solve the problem anyway, and possibly lose everything.

The choice, as they say... is yours. ;)

My new motto is...

;)

Hi! I'm fairly new to android.
I purchased Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 a few days ago. The place I got it from did the v4.1.2 update for me, right after we opened the box. I'm thinking the phone must have been on v2.3. Anyway, I'm not sure how confident this staff member was with android... (he thought the phone already had Jelly Bean before we checked under Settings>About Device).
He used Odin to update the phone.

So I've been using the phone for a few days now and I'm noticing some annoyances...

Unable to lock phone - no lock screen appears.
Problem with my SIM - no service (no bars).
Charging the battery (hard to explain) - sometimes charging animation is distorted/pixelised and doesnt represent true battery percentage.

So as mentioned, I never had a chance to use the device at all before the Jelly Bean update, but currently, here is the version info:

Typing *#1234# into dialpad gives the following:

----------------------------------------------
PDA: I9100XWLSW

PHONE: I9100XXMS2

CSC: I9100XEULS5

Build Info: Thu May 16 09:42:01 KST 2013
----------------------------------------------

I'm thinking I might need to re-install Jelly Bean v4.1.2 and I'm unsure how to go about getting the official firmware that is compatible with my device in this current state. Kies tells me that that my current firmware does not support an update.

Any ideas/advice? Thank you!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums astrogas! :)

My initial reaction is that you take it back to where you bought it and demand that they sort it out for you in case it is a hardware problem.

The firmware that has been flashed, XEU, is the stock Samsung, unbranded, for the UK. It sounds as though they have flashed a different CSC codes firmware from its original... which would explain why Kies is not supporting it. See #1.5.

If you wish to download and re-flash the firmware again then just follow the instructions in #1.7 and use the tip in #1.2.

Hi ironass! Thanks, good to be here, and great thread you have started!

I'm not yet confident with the idea of installing myself, that's why I'm being super careful.
I purchased the phone parallel imported, so there was one guy in a small office running this operation. I'm not sure if it will make things any better if I ask him for help.

However, if you think it might be a hardware problem, perhaps I should go back?

Or perhaps I should try re-installing as per your advice? I'm unsure how to differentiate between what CSC code my phone actually has, and what CSC code refers to the current version I am running.

So, would I be looking to install the one with CSC code XEU again?

Thanks!

It sometimes tells you the CSC code it is expecting when you connect to Kies... but not always. I wouldn't bother too much about the original CSC code as you can always use Odin to update and I'm guessing that this is not a new phone with a 2 year warranty.
