Help Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide

Thanks ironass.
Another option if available is to forego the NFC feature as I've never used it since having the phone. Is there an unbranded 4.1.2 version out there?

Cheers

Overlook

Loads... as per #1.7. Nordic Countries, LSN, unbranded, is the latest.

I downloaded jb and my phone switched off and wont start what shall i do please x

Hello and welcome to Android Forums annhobson! :)

Sorry to learn that you are having problems with your JB update.

Rule #1... Don't panic!

A few more details would be helpful though.

Was your update via the Samsung PC suite, Kies, or OTA, (Over The Air)?

What model of phone do you have, (GT-i9100/G/M/P/T, this can be found on the white sticker under the battery)?

If you do not know your CSC code, see post #1, what is your location, (country), and was your firmware carrier branded, (did it have, say, Vodafone, Orange, Telus, Bell, etc: )?

Hello all,

Very quick question im in UK, currently on ICS 4.0.4 on carphone warehouse un branded handset (LPT) I've downloaded (LSN-NEE) and have yet to do anything-if i were to flash this JB would my kies see my phone to complete backups etc?

2) Lets say Samsung hit their head and release UK JB (LSO/P?) to avoid me flashing ICS to downgrade and then officially upgrade to new UK JB would i simply be able to flash the hypothetical new UK release over the top and factory reset? Or would i get away without wiping data?

Others have reported no problems with Kies apart from updating.

You should be able to just flash over the top using Odin.

A few people in Oz are saying you cannot download apps from non Google Play store under JB is that right ?

See #3.4. ;)

I don't know how to use this but I updated my samsung galaxy s2 to the 4.1.2 thing, does anyone know how to change the icon dock? I know you could change it before the update but now I can't. Help!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Melaniejanee! :)

For complete details and instructions on editing TouchWiz, see page 28 of the Jelly Bean User Manual mentioned in #1.1 in post #1.

See #3.4. ;)

I would guess that updating over the top would eradicate any issues with LSN etc?

An update to JB for the, "T", variant, GT-i9100T on CSC code...

TNZ = NEW ZEALAND T

A further JB update for the GT-i9100G on CSC code...

OZH = CHINA T (from LSF to LSG, see #1.9)

GT-i9100

TMZ = CZECH REPUBLIC (T-Mobile)

Hi IronAss, great thread, very informative :)

I recently purchased my first droid phone, having had Nokia phones forever. It's a I9100, but it's a factory unlocked refurbished model. *#1234* shows the following:

PDA: I9100XXLPQ
Phone: I9100XXLPQ
CSC: I9100OXALPQ
Build Info: Fri Mar 9 01:58:19 KST 2012.

Kies shows my CSC as CSC:LPQ (XXX)

I contacted Samsung Support here in New Zealand to see if they could flash my phone to whatever firmware it should be to receive updates via Kies and they were less than helpful (phone is not from New Zealand so go away basically).

So I guess my questions are:

1) What is my phones correct CSC (since Kies doesn't seem to show one)?

2) If my phone is factory unlocked with the above CSC showing is it possible to flash to a firmware that will allow updates via Kies?

3) If I do decide to go the 1.7 route and flash via Odin, how do I choose which Firmware to download from Sammobile, you've stated some of the earliest releases had some bugs etc, I understand all come with English language, so I guess I'm asking what's the most stable one you're aware of?

Thanks for your help

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Noob_Droid! :)

Lets have a look at your query as you have given me enough I think...

I recently purchased my first droid phone, having had Nokia phones forever. It's a I9100, but it's a factory unlocked refurbished model. *#1234* shows the following:

PDA: I9100XXLPQ
Phone: I9100XXLPQ
CSC: I9100OXALPQ
Build Info: Fri Mar 9 01:58:19 KST 2012.

Kies shows my CSC as CSC:LPQ (XXX)

The firmware running on your phone is ICS, Android 4.0.3, LPQ was the first, (and worst), release, for CSC code OXA which is the Open Europe/Poland code. See, here. The fact that Kies is showing XXX indicates that this was not the original code for the phone and was more than likely flashed to it during refurb. This means that you will not be able to use Kies for updating as it does not recognise your handset. See #1.5 and #1.6.

I contacted Samsung Support here in New Zealand to see if they could flash my phone to whatever firmware it should be to receive updates via Kies and they were less than helpful (phone is not from New Zealand so go away basically).

Strange! I have always found Samsung Service very helpful but I think I can understand their reluctance to try and trace your original CSC code... which may not help you in any case as it could literally be from anywhere in the world.

So I guess my questions are:

1) What is my phones correct CSC (since Kies doesn't seem to show one)?

Long shot. Just type *#272*Device IMEI# on your phone's dial pad. You may, or may not, be shown a 3 digit product/sales code.

2) If my phone is factory unlocked with the above CSC showing is it possible to flash to a firmware that will allow updates via Kies?

If you mean OXA, then no. If you discovered your original CSC code and flashed that firmware to your phone, then the answer is possibly. However, I would point out that your original CSC code could be anything... China, Guatamala, Baltic, Peru, etc: Either way, you will have to use Odin at some stage unless you attempt to change your product/sales code mentioned in my earlier reply. This would Factory Reset your phone though and there is no guarantee's.

3) If I do decide to go the 1.7 route and flash via Odin, how do I choose which Firmware to download from Sammobile, you've stated some of the earliest releases had some bugs etc, I understand all come with English language, so I guess I'm asking what's the most stable one you're aware of?

Providing your carrier does not use a network that requires a, "T", modem, some New Zealand carriers do, which will limit you to flashing only GT-i9100T firmware unless you root your phone and flash a different, (T), modem, then I would recommend going for the latest Nordic Countries release, LSN, as this is proving very good for myself and others.

Thanks for the super quick response Ironass :D

My product/sales code is KOR. You mentioned the possibility of changing this, what does this entail and what are the benefits/drawbacks of doing this vs just flashing via Odin?

KOR = Korea. So, no benefit really, I didn't think it would be. I would give up on that and just flash the latest firmware via Odin. Doing this means that, like me, you can always install the latest JB firmware when it is released, sometimes months ahead of your location/carriers release. Just note the warning in #1.7 and check out the T modem thing I mentioned with your carrier.

If my phone was the T variant the phone would show this at the end of the model number wouldn't it? It just shows model number as 'GT-I9100' so I should be ok without a T variant firmware correct?

Incorrect I'm afraid! ;)

Whilst I agree that your phone is a GT-i9100 which is unlocked and carrier free, if you intend using it on one of the networks that requires a T modem, you will need to flash a T modem to enable compatible connectivity. Thus turning it into a GT-i9100T for use on that network.

From post #190...

Providing your carrier does not use a network that requires a, "T", modem, some New Zealand carriers do, which will limit you to flashing only GT-i9100T firmware unless you root your phone and flash a different, (T), modem,

This is why Samsung have unbranded firmware for both the GT-i9100, (I9100NZCLS8), and the GT-i9100T, (I9100TTNZLSA), for New Zealand.

I've been using the phone as it is currently setup on the 2Degrees network, am I correct that based upon the current CSC code the firmware I have is not currently a T variant so to continue using the phone on this network I won't need a T Variant (granted if I want to change network I may need a T Variant)?

Possibly!

A T phone will work on a non T network and vice versa... just not as well.

A simple call by you to your carrier would, of course, settle the matter as I am not au fait with the various NZ carriers and their networks.

2 Degrees doesn't use the T variant.

I've just installed the nordic Jellybean as you suggested, working great so far, having been using a 3 year old nokia I though ICS looked great but jellybean is even better! :-)

Thanks heaps for this thread and your help Ironass, uch appreciated

My CSC is I9100CPWLPA, I guess that is because I bought it from carphone warrehouse. Any ideas how I go about getting JB on this phone?

Hi the_ace
It's not been released yet so you'll need to follow 1.7 if you want it prior to the official release. I'm very new to android and just followed those instructions and they worked like a charm.

Thanks for the quick reply mate, I was offered the OTA update but cancelled by mistake so I guess it must be available? My computer can't open the files from hotlink so I reckon i'm stuck. I may have to give in and get an iphone at least that way I can take it to an apple shop for things like this
