I would guess the update app is just in-case there are software issues they can push out an update to it. Kind of like what they did with the Esteem

The way they should've done on the connect.. don't get me started on how horrible that thing was out the box. I mean it was a super fast device, but battery temps exceeding 140degrees while in normal use is insane. But that phone is way more than the spirit, and if that didn't get any update when it sure as Hell needs it (still) I'm highly doubtful we'll ever see an official update on this device
