Root Jellytime on DHD - good enough for a work phone?

Hello! Have Desire HD. Tired of 2.3.5, had a play with a Nexus 7 and love 4.1. Also I wouldn't miss all the HTC bloatware. This seems to point to switching to a custom rom. I have never done this!

But... i use this phone for work, I want it to be reliable. Jellytime r22 looks on the face of it to be reliable (yes I have read several other threads on here before posting this) but my question is - has anyone used a recent jellytime rom on the DHD as their permanent rom for any significant period? If so, did you find it reliable?

I have been using Jelly time r21 for a few days now. Although this isn't a significant amount of time, I do use my phone all day everyday for a lot of different tasks.

It has been stable and given me no problems and is my favoured ROM at the moment.

Give it a go. If you don't like it you can always go back.

Many thanks! Which software/instructions did you use to root and install it, out of interest? Or do you just know how to do it?

Hey jlparsons - welcome to the forums... thanks for joining!! :)

You should check out this thread - http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-...tting-desire-hd-have-no-idea-where-start.html - it's a recent discussion on the same thing :)

If you have any questions, feel free to ask in here. My first bit of advice is to read as much as possible and make sure you've understood before actually acting on the instructions. It's easier to ask questions before you get stuck ;)

Cheers,
D :D

I found it pretty good.

Make sure you disable hw overlays.

How long have you been using it?

D-U-R-X, many thanks! I read the "Getting the Desire HD an have no idea where to start" before creating this one, I'm now looking for a more 'lived with' opinion. Most posts on tech forums appear to be from folk immediately before or after whatever they're doing/planning. So far so good!

I actually meant that there was discussion on how to root in that thread ;)

I haven't used this ROM, which is why I can't give you my impressions of it. Others have said it's quite good. Mehta's probably going to be one of the best people to speak to though, as I think he's been on JT for a while :)

Marvellous, thanks! I think that's all the confidence I need to crack on and do it! Will report back when done... wish me luck.

Ok, downgrade appears to have been successful but when I run "adb reboot bootloader" i get S-on however. Tried "fastboot oem lock", it says waiting for device, then nothing...

Any suggestions?

Yes. I ran it again and it appears to be working this time touch wood! Cross your fingers and hold onto your hats...

... no joy. Everything appeared to work fine that time but still S-ON. I am perplexed.

As long as you diabled your anti-virus program/firewall everything should be okay :D

Running from debian 6 lxde amd64, installed required 32 bit libraries. Trying again now, seems to have accepted the downgrade easily enough but it's still stubbornly S-ON...

... Ok more is happening this time, different screens etc. S-OFF showing!! Still doesn't appear to be finished...

Anyone else notice that the manual seems to be talking about different software?? ;)

Yes it works! Only bug I've found so far is that the mic doesn't work on speaker phone but I haven't actually tried to fix it. Taking some getting used to and some customising.

Thanks for your help folks!

Ok, all looking good. Black everything, all animations off, Just the speakerphone to worry about. I haven't been able to find a fix online but even if I can't, that's something I can live without for now I guess. Haven't trist bluetooth calling yet, that's something which must work (car).

Only other issues were the lack of cursor keys on the main keyboard (I've found an option to use the volume keys for this purpose which will do for now) and I can't find a way to use a numeric predictive-text keyboard instead of qwerty in portrait mode (I have giant sausage fingers), but I suspect these are vanilla android issues rather than rom-specific issues.

The only constant issues of JellyTime are the speakerphone mute button and the headset buttons.

There appears to be consensus on battery drain. With R7.2 and R8, it was not the most powerful efficient ROM I tried, but far from the worst.

There can be some glitches with the camera and video when rotating the screen.

The other issues are solved and sometimes come back as features are added and change.

With a stable release it is as good as Ice Cold, with the cool new Jelly Bean features. Following this ROM from release to release is like riding a roller coaster.

My advice, when you find a good build, skip the next few.

Been using R21 for almost a week now and it’s been fantastic, certainly feels faster than Stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 and Blackout ICS 3.1.

The only things not working as already mentioned: Speakerphone mute and Headset buttons.

Other minor bugs are mainly to do with the stock camera: Green screen as image slides to gallery after taking picture and Glitches in Panoramic mode.

The only issues I personally have with this ROM, these may be just with R21 or I might be doing something wrong: Battery is not as good as Blackout ICS but I’ve read R22 is a lot better, No Galley settings, No DLNA option to stream to TV over WiFi and my SD Card media is not showing via Gallery or Apollo although I can view them via ES File Explorer… I understand I need to format my SD Card to fix this. I’ve also noticed today that after each reboot the ‘Disable HW overlays’ checkbox keeps getting unchecked.

I also miss the Sense widgets and keyboard.

I use this ROM daily with regular internet searching, reading news on-line, taking pictures/videos, watching YouTube, listening to radio via Tune in and my daughter even plays games on it and so far no performance issues, in fact I'm very impressed.

Looking forward to upgrading this weekend to R22 or maybe R23 if one is released by then.

Hear, Hear. This ROM is like my "home" ROM at the moment. I'll be on Blackout ICS this weekend though. Starting to miss sense widgets a little bit.
