Juice Defender

I went to download the beta after reading this thread. Permissions looked reasonable, so I went to install...next thing I knew it asked for superuser permission, although the app description didn't say it required root. After that, it asked to install AOSP Helper, with a rather alarming list of permissions for that.

What does the app do with superuser permission that it doesn't do without it? And does anyone know what AOSP Helper does?

Similar sitch here... If I open my phone from a locked (or blank screen) state, the browser data connection is not there until I refresh for the second time. But I dont need to reboot or anything...

The only thing that has gone wrong with mine is somtimes it doesnt turn the data connection back on when i wake up my phone. It has only happened twice, but both times i had to restart the phone to get my 3G to come back on.

I don't see your problem. Why did you root if you don't want to use superuser?
I want to be the one to control how I use it. We're frequently cautioned around here that rooting brings additional responsibilities when it comes to security (not to mention the potential to thoroughly mess up our phones).

The app may be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but without knowing more about it, I find it disquieting that it wants to install an additional app with just about every permission in the book, and grabs superuser permission even when the request is denied (and it's not even described as a for-root app in the Market that I could see). And if nobody else knows why it's behaving that way either, I plan to just go on being cautious until more information becomes available.

I had been using Juice Defender beta and getting great battery savings, registering anywhere from x1.7 to x2.1. I uninstalled and loaded the 'stable' version for a week, and was only averaging x1.1 to x1.5, so not even an overlap.

I went back to the beta version, and once again, now, it's at x1.82.

I am using the stable version and love it. I get battery life extended by about 1.5-1.7x and my phone is in use often (push Exchange emails, Gmail, texts, etc) and I get everything in a timely manner. I might play with the beta and see if I can extend my life even more.

Oh ok. I see how that would be a problem. Unrooted here, i was confused on the problem.

Back to the app, i have quit using it. It seemed liek everytime i needed to turn my phone on to check something real quick i would get stuck with the data off. I will try again, but it is annoying.

I've been pleased with the data being turned off - I'm on the 200 mb plan. I need to conserve as much as I can! My Cappy is rooted, JD seems to be really helping with the battery, I can go 36 hours between charges.

I have been using the paid version for 2-3 weeks now. Some days are better than others best 17 hours @ 57%, worst needed to recharge after 8 hours. At home where I have a wireless LAN, I have to manually turn on WIFI as it seems to favor 3G even though the cell signal is weak. I used the standard set up and also tried to customize tho the few overrides including the location do not seem to make any difference.

Overall, I think it is better with than without, but having to turn on wifi before using the internet or marketplace seems contrary to what I thought this app does automatically.

I know that a lot of folks swear by this app, but I just disabled 'always on mobile data'. Doesn't affect email, talk, or messaging in any way, just certain things don't sync all the time automatically.

In the case of my phone's configuration, the only thing it affects is weather and news. I have the tiny Android news and weather widget on my main desktop; touching weather changes to the weather app screen and forces a refresh. Touching news changes to the news app screen and forces a refresh. So, they only sync when I want to view the information...I have no problem with that.

In fact, I've found that any app that no longer syncs automatically due to that system setting syncs automatically when I access the app, so I really see no downside. The upside is that this can save a great deal of battery time.

The downside is that if you're a person that wants the Facebook app to give you notifications every time someone posts, etc, that won't work. But, on my rooted ROM, I've removed the Facebook app completely (Titanium Backup), get Facebook notifications via email (not affected by the setting) and view them when I want via web browser. Again, no down side to me.

I'm not saying that this is the way to go, just 'a' way to go. I hope that it helps someone else. Thank you for your time.

if data is off, wouldnt i have to manually refresh gmail?

I can't figure out why Juice Defender fails to initialize data sometimes when waking the phone up. There is no rhyme or reason to when it happens but it sure is a pain. It happens to me about 25% of the time I wake up the phone. The only way to reactivate data is to reboot the device. Anyone found any solutions for this?

Do you have the beta version or the regular version installed? I had problems with the "stable" one initially; the beta seems to be treating me better.

I've got the regular version. I tried the beta version but I couldn't get over the icon in the notification bar....yuk. Is there a way around that?

In the regular version you have to toggle to Advanced mode and then toggle off "notification". Haven't tried the beta yet (will soon) but I don't know why that setting would be different.

Last time I tried the beta that option was not available. I'm hoping that will change with future releases.....or maybe I'm just missing something.

i just installed this, and then uninstalled it. only because i'm new to all this and couldn't figure out how to work it. It messed all my stuff up. I couldn't send an email or a picture message and my weather thing was all out of whack and 3G was gone...

Of course once i uninstalled and rebooted my battery went about half way down...

The trick to this app is to not touch it! lol

Install it, open it, enable it, forget about it. Period.

When screen is off, it keeps data turned off. Every 15min it will turn data back on for 60 seconds to pull new emails, weather, whatever. Then it turns it back off.

When you unlock or wake the phone, it turns data on so the phone acts as if the app isnt even installed.

People who will see the biggest benefit from this app are those who keep the screen off for a lot of the day.

will this app help with my phone always searching for a signal?? I work in a building where i have almost no signal, so it kills my battery.

It seems to work ok but I dumped it. My 3G was spotty at best, which drove me nuts! I wasn't crazy about superuser rights and I am a heavy IM user. whenever I would get a new IM and turn my phone on..It would take 30-45 sec before I could reply.

It's deceptive. Load the beta, and it'll automatically enable JD. Disable it, and when you re-enable it, you should get a prompt asking what kind of notification you want. Pick none.

I have to say that I was a little skeptical at first that a free app could do so much good for a devices battery life. I downloaded it yesterday and I have seen nearly a 100% increase in battery life since.... Thrills! Just like those Showtime Rotisserie's you "set it and forget it" :D
