So I just got my EVO last week prior to that I had a hero that was rooted used it for a while it crashed idk how it just stopped working got it replaced and kept it stock...
And now with renewal I decided to go with the EVO and its great and all I keep reading is ROOT
Now i want to but I'm skeptical about it and don't want to have a deja vu
What are some benefits and how should I go about rooting

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
first of all do you know of you have gingerbread or not installed on your phone? go to settings/about phone/software info/what android and software version do you see? if it is says android 2.3.3 and software 4.22 or 4.24 then you will have to wait as you can't root gingerbread yet. check out:You Can't Root Your Gingerbread 2.3.3. Evo....Just Yet.

however if it says android 2.2 and software 3.70 then we are in business. we can get you rooted.

edit: you can read this:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/129648-quick-intro-rooting-those-new-rooting.html. to get to understand what root is. and also read this http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide. get to know it well before you root your phone.

The good news is they are hard at work on gaining root on the new software so hopefully it will not be too long. In the mean time, like Ocn said read the Rooting Guide and the Quick Intro guide. They are filled with information about rooting. As far as the Hero, I had one that was rooted before getting my Evo. The Evo is far superior to the machine the Hero was. Think of it as an upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 7. :)

Thx guys I actually started reading both and will definately do sone extensive reading....
Yeah I can already tell that the hero has nothing on my evo :)

Ha, to answer your question, yes you SHOULD, but obviously by now you see that you can't just yet. Once you root you'll never go back. The Evo is an amazing device. Some of us are in the same boat as you are with getting a replacement phone with the update preinstalled.
