Root Just got iPad, need to root

OK, there's probably a thousand threads on this but I did do a search. This thread states to wait for the unrevoked team to release an update.

However, I just purchased my iPad over the weekend and I need to tether. My friend told me to visit http://unrevoked.com/ to do it. The problem is I want to backup everything on my phone before I root because I'm terrified of losing everything.

What's the best way to backup everything before I root?

Thank U

Your paid apps are already backed up in market thru your gmail account. As is your contacts. To backup your nonpaid apps download Astro File Manager (or something like it) and back them up. I wouldn't suggest using unrevoked3 to root your phone though. It can cause a lot of problems. I would suggest doing it the 'long, hard' way. Read the stickies at the top of this section.

Thank you. I'll do it the LONG hard way. Thank you for answering my question about purchased apps. I've already found an app to backup my texts. I'll try the long method tonight. I REALLY don't want to mess anything up but I refuse to pay $29.99/mo.

The "long hard way" is ultimately going to do the exact same thing, and give you s-off via unrevoked-forever. Yes, unrevoked3 can have its problems, but if you're not comfortable with all of the steps in any of the other methods, you're more likely to break things than you are with unrevoked3. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but you should know that ultimately, there is no difference. Unrevoked has since been updated to work with all versions. That being said, if you have an older phone, you can use universal autoroot's quick method (search for it at xda) to root via the engineering bootloader. It will only work if your phone does not have the newer partitions, and should not be attempted if you already have hboot 2.02 or up.

I've completed all the steps up until Recovery Mode. I'm holding down the VOL DOWN+PWR however my phone vibrates and the phone options appear.

How long do I have to hold both buttons down? Recovery mode is not appearing.

Thnx

What do you mean by phone options? What you are doing will take you to hboot, which is a white screen with menu options. You should only have to hold down those buttons for a few seconds until you get to that screen. From there, you can select recovery. Just to make sure you're on the right track, what method are you doing?

I'm here:

STEP 2: BOOTLOADER MODE
Hold down VOL DOWN + POWER until device boots into a White Screen.
Move to BOOTLOADER by using the VOL DOWN toggle and select by using POWER button. The device will now boot into Recovery mode.

You should now see something like this when it fully loads.

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.97.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab

I'm using unrevoked method? That white screeen isn't coming up.

The reason I don't suggest Unrevoked3 is because of the problems it caused my phone.

Fair enough. I've seen it cause problems before, and I wouldn't expect you to think it's the best method out there if it didn't work out well for you. That being said, I've seen some of the more manual methods break things not only more often, but in worse ways. If you follow directions closely and know what you're doing, you're likely to come out of it just fine. I will say one thing - it's easier to track what the manual methods are doing, whereas unrevoked is somewhat of a closed box. Generally speaking though, it's usually pretty easy to fix most of the problems unrevoked3 can cause.

Yes. I downloaded the software on my Mac and it successfully rooted my phone.

Great, so now you're just trying to get to recovery? The exact order is:

1) Make sure phone is off
2) Press and hold volume down button
3) While still pressing volume down, press power button and hold both
4) The screen should turn on, and in a few seconds take you to the white hboot screen. You can let go as soon as you see that. It will run through a quick scan for PC36IMG files, then you will see the menu options.

Is that what you tried?

I definintely get what you are saying. What I see a lot is people aren't reading enough and learning and understanding before they jump into rooting. That is why they screw up their phones. If people read more and understood then there would be a whole heck of a lot less threads started that are 'help I screwed up my phone' type threads. I am sure that won't happen though.

I hear ya. Unrevoked's greatest strength and worst weakness is that it supposedly makes rooting easy.

No! I was trying it with the phone ON! Thank U!

Okay...I've completed all the steps and created a NAND backup. And my sys shows S-OFF.

I tried to run Sprint Hotspot however whenever I activate it the 3G internet drops?? Do I need to do anything else to get it working?

You can't use Sprint Hotspot on the stock ROM. You have two choices:

1) Install android wifi tether from the market (the easier option)
2) Flash a ROM that has the Sprint Hotspot unlocked (myn's warm, mikfroyo, etc.).

Since you're just starting out, I recommend you go with option 1.
