Help Just got the Galaxy Nexus... Somewhat dissapointed...

Hello,

This is the first post I have here, but I have been searching for assistance with my droid x for a while and now with the Galaxy Nexus.

I may not need to start a new thread, but some of the ones out there have gone so long and off topic at times, that I wanted to get a fresh perspective.

I like many others out there am having difficulties with my Nexus. I will be sitting in one spot and have 2-3 bars 4g (signal around -96-100db) and then all of a sudden the bar indicator goes blank and signal strength goes to -120. When this happens all calls are dropped, no data connection, etc.

I have read a lot of this is happening to ppl out there when their phones are asleep, but this happens to my while I am actively using it.

I just got it Saturday and the issues were happening right out of the store. I got home did some searching, found that the official 4.0.4 ROM was out and proceeded to unlock the bootloader, and upgrade to that ROM (I have since flashed it back and locked the bootloader back down).

This made no difference in my signal. I could be in an area where the service is all bars -60db, and then BOOM, no service.

My question is, I am aware some have the issue and some dont, so I am not sure if this is a hardware issue with the phone I have or not. My Verizon rep is going to replace both the phone and sim card when I get to the store tomorrow. If this doesnt make a difference in the service, and the ROM i installed hadn't changed anything, is it worth waiting for Verizon to push the upgrade to see if that makes a difference?

By what I am reading the radios had a slight upgrade, and I am assuming that they are the same in the ROM I installed as the one they are going to push? Or am I somewhat off base here.

Just wanted an opinion, I love the phone and don't want to change it for something else, but it isnt much good to me if I cant carry on a conversation.

PS. It seems that if I force it to stay in 3g it functions ok with calls, but what good is a 4g phone if I have to leave it in 3g all the time?

IMO if i were you i'd take it back.

There are some Nexus owners that haven't had any problems.

However there are a lot of Nexus owners (me included, i have the same problem you have and i'm on #2) that have had the problems and have been waiting since December for a fix.

I say that if i were you i'd take it back only because i have made the decision that i can no longer recommend the G Nex to anyone on Verizon.

Yeah this has become a real PIA for a lot of people. I'm one of the lucky ones but I really feel for those who haven't been so fortunate. Having those issues every day would be maddening.

yeah it's driving me nuts I can't even carry on a conversation for more than 4 to 5 minutes before the damn thing just drops. Does anybody have any idea on my questions? I really wanna love this phone but I can tolerate 2 years of this.

Welcome to the forums! :D

If you rooted and ROMmed, and then flashed the 4.0.4 radios and it STILL didn't fix the problem, then I would also suggest a replacement.

If the device simply won't do what you want/need it to do, there's no sense owning it... even if it IS cool.

Fortunately, I have never dropped a call. But a lot of Nexus owners out there are having problems... the updated radios generally fix that, though.

Thank you all for your suggestions, I'm headed up to the verizon store tomorrow to have them swap it out. I am rather surprise it a brand new device has an issue but I guess it happens...

Welcome here. Good luck with that tell us when your swapped and rockin' a new GN.

I am surprised when a brand new device doesn't have an issue.

For all the amazing features, it seems quality control is lacking, as the experience from person to person has varied wildly.

I am more shocked that you go from full bars to No bars like that. i could see going from 1 or 2 bars to no bars. makes me think it was a bad sim card. hopefully you get a better phone/SIM card this time.

its a fantastic phone that has been marred by slow updates and bad radios.
thankfully i Rooted and have been on 4.0.4 and the new radios for a while now with absolutely no issues with the phone.

Replaced my Sprint Gnex to no avail, same signal strength issues. Can there be THAT MANY bad phones out there?

Rooting is my next port of call

Well they replaced my phone and SIM card tonight... I don't want to say too much too soon, but... so far so good.

I only dropped signal 2 times tonight, but I was trying to xfer all the data from my old droid to the Nexus at the time (several gigs at once), so I am hoping that was the reason for it.

Also when I was on the drive home, I kept looking at the signal reading on the phone, and it bounced around a bit (as I would expect), but it was between -75 and -100 for the most part. The other phone barley broke -95 or so. At home its still poor, but the phone has indicated 4g most of the night which was not the case before.

On a side note, this may be a silly question, but is it normal for you to lose 4g connection on longer stretches of highway? I noticed in the area where there were shops and homes I had a full 4g signal, but in areas that was just highway, I had a full 3g signal... I assume that is the norm, but just wanted to ask for others opinions.

Keep your fingers crossed, and for the others out there, I feel your pain, hopefully it will work out for you all in the end.

Yeah, that's normal. There are far fewer 4G towers than 3G, so naturally there will be less 4G coverage than 3G. Note, in the 4G friendly areas you were in you most likely were also in 3G friendly areas too, but your phone chose 4G because it connects to LTE whenever it is available.

I always find it strange and consider myself lucky when I hear stuff like this. I can hold a call or browse internet with 0 bars in a known BAD service area. I'm not aware of a single call I've dropped on my Nexus and I do not live in a major metro area...in fact I live in a town of 1,000 people and the nearest city with any sizable population is 50 miles away. I travel pretty frequently (on the interstates driving/riding) with the family and honestly can't recall one dropped call.

I would say that you have a hardware issue and agree with others you should take it back. However, I noticed some key things in what you said below. First off, I notice you flashed a 4.0.4 ROM but see no mention of flashing the radios. I do not believe flashing the ROM will upgrade the radios. I am pretty sure that has to be done separately, could be why you saw no difference. The last statement about it doing ok when you turn LTE off also leads me to believe that you didn't upgrade the radios because it seems like an issue of swapping from 3G to 4G (LTE) which the 4.0.4 radios supposedly fixed.

This is the link to the radios you should have flashed as well as the ROM

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on the 4.0.4 ROM not including the radios.

my 3rd Gnex will be here today with a new sim card. I'm anxious to see how it does. This is the first time they've sent me a new sim. My 2nd G Nex was no better than the launch day one i got.

Trophy...I'm real interested in hearing your feedback on your 3rd Galaxy Nexus. Although I'm not too optimistic for you, I am in exactly the same boat and may request a 3rd G-Nex if you have luck with yours.

I haven't had any call drop issues on my GNex and in the 6 months I've had it I have been to good 4G areas, bad 4G areas, and no 4G areas. It's so disconcerting to keep hearing of these issues for people, it just makes me get nervous for my next phone purchase as I want to stay with Android and a Nexus phone but if Samsung makes the next Nexus it will really be touch and go. No radio issues aside for me, i still have not as good data connectivity as other phones I've owned, name the Rezound.

I'm a little confused... So if you update the radio's to 4.0.4, the reception is better? For phones with issues that is.

i think you saw this in that other thread. but for the others....

the third nexus is just as bad even with a new sim card.

A friend that lives one street over came to my house with a RAZR MAXX....he held 3 bars of 4G for twenty minutes while in my home. He stayed around the mid -90 dbm range. ...i stayed at -120dbm...as i always do at home. :shot:
