Root Just root, nothing else

Hey

Is there any way to root android phone without anything else added? I mean, root so that the current user becomes superuser?

I'm not keen on installing anything that replaces the RECOVERY menu on the loader or anything like that. just roots please.

Then, is there any way to gain S_OFF access to the system, say what was previously okay with clockworkmod and recovery mode, then usb access there and then I could remove system/app files. I know it's not possible with S_ON, and I would like to keep S_ON.

thanks! :)

Give us more than 2 hours to answer your question.

Yes, that is absolutely possible. Without knowing what device you have, I cant tell you how to do it. But with my phone, an Evo, I rooted using the Unrevoked method. All that does is give you s-off, installs clockwork, and give you superuser. You can then do anything that requires root, and still keep your stock rom.

yeah well I did unrevoked and noticed it goes into places I won't want it

for an example, it placed the text "clockworkmod" on my recovery page, even before android even booted. that's a no-go in my books.

and it installed superuser permissions which I didn't want. so that method is out of the question for me.

just a simple from limited user to> superuser script that doesn't spread spelling errors around my phone will do :)

how is an android rooted anyhow? couldn't a virus do the same trick? and if rooting apps are banned from android market, is rooting androids like homebrewing PSP's so they can play backup games?

in very short, all I want is to remove some stock apps which I don't need or even want. for that I need root, not s-off. but then again I might not be able to connect via ADB to my phone before android boots without a mod such as clockwork.

sigh. :)

I rooted my SGS4G via One-Click. Just to freeze bloatware. Doubletwist kept turning itself on. I have the stock ROM, and don't really want an upgrade as I mostly use the phone as a PDA.

it placed the text "clockworkmod" on my recovery page

Rooting requires a custom recovery, so unrevoked automatically installs clockworkmod.

and it installed superuser permissions which I didn't want. so that method is out of the question for me.

Again, to root your phone, you NEED the superuser app. WIthout it, you will not be able to run any apps that require root.

couldn't a virus do the same trick?

Possibly, if the person who put the virus there has physical access to your phone. Since it requires a computer and a few reboots, somebody would physically have to have your phone. A simple program wont to it.

and if rooting apps are banned from android market

Rooting apps are NOT banned from the market. Just recently, Google removed wireless tether apps, because they violate every carrier's terms of agreement. All other root apps are still there, and will always be there, as google doesnt care if you root your phone.

is rooting androids like homebrewing PSP's so they can play backup games?

It's similar, but should never be used top get games/apps for free.

for that I need root, not s-off.

Again, root IS s-off. If you have s-on, you are not rooted.

you CAN root without s-off my phone isnt HTC but a friend had a rooted eris with s-on and superuser and without a custom recovery. but i dont know about your particular phone. yes, TRUE root access requires both to flash custom ROMs and have root 4 life guaranteed. however you can use something like Super One Click (i think will work on your phone) that will give you super user only. you can then remove bloatware and unroot. ive seen more than one phone with ONLY superuser no s-off bootloader and no custom recovery. again the OP obviously ONLY wants to remove bloatware, you dont need soff or a custom recovery to do that. and the market DID remove the oneclick root apps like universal androot and z4root. they do have apps that require root. wireless tether apps are still there. YOUR CARRIER blocks them. but for root you MUST have superuser. you can have a custom recovery and no root in your ROM and remove apps via adb in recovery. but either way to get root you will need to root your phone. it sounds like you want root without root if that makes sense.

yeah well I would like root without anything else happening, such as it installing something on my recovery or some such

just root, rename Flickr.apk to Flickr.bak and unroot

:)

how is ADB useful if you're developing on android and do you always need root then? well, you can access the phone but cannot write to /system/app at least :(

It is strange to see this topic in Android Applications section...
CWM does the root and install recovery. S-OFF is a separate process.

How about going through with CWM and rooting the phone, then find a ROM similar to stock, edit it by removing bloatware (simply delete the apk files from the zip) and flashing back to phone? The advantage is that you don't need S-OFF, but you will have a custom Recovery. At that stage, you can even flash an HTC startup logo in the phone.

What were you expecting to happen? Nothing else is supposed to happen after root. You can now flash custom roms and use extra apps but YOU have to do that yourself.
