so im new to the android scene and was wonderin a few questions. im a long time fanboy of apple and idevices but i will be getting a lg optimus m in febuary during tax time. my question is if i upgrade to 2.3 gingerbread will i still be able to jailbreak or mod or root or whatever it is called or is updating ify like it is on apple devices? and every update for android, will it break my mod? what are some cool things i can do with the phone when i mod it? thanks to all of you that help. i just want to make sure i read into the modding of the phone so i can do it as soon as i get it.

I may very well be way off, but from what I have been reading, upgrading to 2.3 will not be possible at all until LG releases a firmware update supporting it. I doubt they even will if that is true. So until then just wait. Hopefully I don't get corrected for being terribly wrong.

i think your right i dont remember where i read that lg has to come up with the update, however i think that if are rooted you wont get an ota update when i had a mytouch a while ago this was the case. what you can do is flash a custom rom later on with the update while also keeping root privleges :}

As far as I know and had been said many times before, MetroPCS does not distribute updates OTA. At least not with the Optimus M.

what is the latest update that is avalible for the phone. whaen i go to lgs website and type in the model number LGMS690 it says that an update is avalible and it has me download a program LG Mobile Support Tool. if an update isnt avalible whats the tool for? again im getting the device next month so i cant play around with it so im trying to figure out things b4 i get it.

The lastest update for MS690 is the 2.2.1 update. It blocked the exploit used by z4root and others to root the phone. As far as I know, no other root method has been found. So no you cannot root it. And if you buy the Optimus M with your tax money, then chances are you phone will already have the 2.2.1 update. You dont want that. But thanks to andyo70 and others on the site, you can push the 2.2 update back onto your phone. Have had it for a while now, and i havent seen problem one. Thanks again andyo70. And dont download LG Mobile Support Tool.

And as said earlier in the thread the Optimus M doesn't do any OTA updates so the LG Updater is the only way they can get 2.2.1 back on your phone.

Correct. I know for sure the MS690 wont do any OTA, and havent heard of any MetroPCS phone that does push OTA updates. Just another MetroPCS got right. :D

ok so if im understanding right my optimus will come with 2.2.1 but i can downgrade it to 2.2 to root it right out of the box to downgrade it how would i do that?

yup i just found im downloading the software now and i copyed the tutorial to my computer just in case it gets pulled of of the internet for one reason or another. lol thank you all! now what are some cool things i can do once its downgraded and rooted? is it just like the iphone where i can do just about anything that i or someone else can code? like changing the lock screen and themes and stuff like that? anyone familliar with the iphone? is the costomization better or worse? sorry bout all the questions. just one more: when its rooted is there like a program i go to to download stuff like a cydia equivalent for android? how does that work?

This phone is pretty sweet as far as what you can do to customize it in my opinion. After you root there is not much to do except have fun and customize away. One program that you will need just to accomplish file managing is rootexplorer. It's in the market but you can also google it and find out it for free. If you do that you will need astrofilemanager, thats free on the market. Good luck!
