Just wondering, how many iPhone refugees here?

My wife and I had been iPhonies since the first generation. Happily switching over from AT&T and with the V I haven't missed a beat. The iPhone might have more style, but I haven't seen a lack of substance in my Optimus.

I also don't miss NOT being tied to that dreaded iTunes one bit. I love being able to sync without being tethered! K9 mail is a bit clunky at first, but it's a workable replacement to iPhone mail. Handcent is a great Text client. Note Everything is a good replacement for Notes. And GTasks syncs great with gmail.

Add the monthly savings from AT&T to VirginMobile and this was a "no-brainer" move.

Not me. I would not pay $1200+ a year to use a smartphone. $300 a year is worth it to me. I have been using an Ipod touch and minus a few apps and the retina screen, I am not missing it much (I do wish Zipcar would get off their a**es and make an app for the 'droid).

Yeah. I have a ipod touch for my 3yr old's educational programs and videos which I also use from time to time for certain games I love which are not available on android. I can't see paying 1200+ a year for phone service when I get 98% of the time coverage on VM for just 25/month right now. And I have a backup Tracfone for areas with no VM voice service (don't need 3G all the time). So:

iPhone: 1200+/year
VM with backup tracfone : 420/yr (with unlimited data right now)

No brainer.

I moved from the iphone 3g to the optimus v.

Couldn't be happier.

Loved the iphone, but wasn't signing another 2 year agreement to get further updates, and wow on the savings every month.

Mike

I have been an iPhone Guy switched to the blackberry on boost that phone was crap compared to the iPhone so I switched to the optimus and I'm loving every minute of it

I also would love to have an iphone but don't justify paying that kind of money a month, and if it ever made it to the prepaid market spending 600 dollars on any mobile devices is just a waste,i also had a Blackberry on VM,what junk the RIM os and app store was garbage,if all you want to do with a Blackberry is send texts make call or push emails then get it but the prepaid ones are a ripoff, the V on the other hand is well worth the 150 down 43.00 a month price and then some, hell the phone and deal is even worth 200 down.

Very much wanted an iPhone, but was going to wait until I could get it with Verizon instead of AT&T. Then THAT became available but I realized that I couldn't justify $70/month for a phone/data plan (I'd been paying $5/month with my old non-smart VM phone, with an as needed $1.50 per day data plan).

But $20 more per month, for unlimited data and 300 minutes? THAT I could justify. So went with VM and the OV a month ago, haven't looked back. Iphone, shmiPhone. :D

I had an iPhone 3G. I only had it because it was given to me. I had it on the prepay plan and was spending almost 60 a month just for data. Decided to come back to VM and get an Optimus V (I had a Kyocera XTC before I got the iPhone).

I still have the iPhone for some of the games (Plants VS Zombies, Civ Revolution, Trenches VS).

I wanted an iPhone but couldn't come close to affording it. In fact, I didn't think I would be able to afford any type of smartphone until VM came out with their $25/month plan.

There should be a reward for the first person to get an iphone working on a VM plan :)

Virgin Mobile in Canada does have an iphone available. :P

From what I have gathered, Virgin Mobile anywhere but the US is a great company.

I've had Virgin Mobile for almost 10 years and it's only been the last 5-6 months that I've noticed an increase in problems. So far, I've been problem free for a month or so now.

We'll see how well they do with the update for the Intercept.

I'm the opposite of this thread. I went from VM optimus v to verizon iphone 4. For me no amount of savings was worth the constant data headaches (I use data a lot, over 1gb in 5 days) I was having with VM. I thought I would be able to accept this at the time due to the cost but it turns out I wasn't.

I'm sure I'll probably cringe when my first bill comes in from verizon but just knowing I have dependable 3g service that works just about everywhere, even my dungeon of a basement is more then worth the additional cost.

please know to that my post was in no way intended to bash VM or the optimus V. I loved the phone and the concept of the service when I had them and am hopeful that they will be able to provide dependable service to their users in the near future.

Pretty dependable for my needs and works everywhere in my house and around my state, but coverage is the key when choosing a provider, but you will have to curb that data usage or your bills will resemble mortgage payments,Verizon has far superior service i use Fios in my home and love it,but their wireless charges should be considered a crime.

verizons data rate is reasonable. Its having to have a minimum 39.99 voice plan to start off that makes the cost high. I was originally looking at ATT but as soon as I saw they charge 25. for only 2gb of data I was forget this. That is robbery. There is no way I could budget my data use like that. I'll be over 2gb of data in less then two weeks.

you're right too that coverage is the key. on the optimus V I would never get a consistent data connection at my house and at work. Now I'm not really sure why that was the case because I believe sprint and verizon use the same towers but it was what it was.

I'm really glad that you're having dependable data service with VM and the optimus V. Once they can figure out how to get constant and dependable service to the masses they'll be making a fortune and really putting a hurt on the contract providers and force them to adopt their business model. I really hope VM can pull it off.

Plus did you add in texting, and what does Verizon conceive as being unlimited Data, before they throttle,or start adding overcharges,in my case i have no house phone no need, but i can't make it a month with anything less then 600 minutes on a voice plan, but the real killer would be that 2 year contract, but the fact that VM service did not work for you is unfortunate, seeing the price difference for my needs it would be 70 dollars more a month than i am paying now.to go with a verizon contract on a smartphone.

I have been with VM for about 8 years now. The Optimus is my first smartphone. Been wanting one for a long time but I just couldn't fathom the expensive monthly contracts. Nor do I want to have another $5-15 additional fees and taxes tacked on as a surprise.

I did delve into the iOS market last year with an iPad and iPod Touch though. I like the app market ecosystem, but you do end up paying more for content. First thing I did when I got my iPad WiFi was pick up a VM MiFi for the unlimited $40/month plan. I keep that in a bag with my Touch now so I can have the iPhone app experience without the monthly contract. Only thing I miss is the GPS.

I am considering trying a family plan next year though. My family is big on Verizon and the increased phone choices would be nice. But I'm not sure if I'd want to go with iPhone or Android. Either way I don't think I'll be giving up my unlimited VM MiFi plan. The data speeds aren't fantastic but it does work for me. It was really nice having the MiFi over the winter when the cablemodem went out in a storm.

As far as iOS vs Android is concerned the only thing I miss right now is Netflix. And I haven't figured out how to stream video from my PC. But most everything else works smoothly.

Only one other issue bugs me. The tiny screen of the Optimus. At 3.2 inches it's hard to do much with text. The Touch/iPhone isn't really that much better at 3.5 inches.

from what I read they throttle heavy users and and may do the same with streaming video services such as netflix, hulu and mlb that reduces video quality but I'm pretty sure all the carriers do that. As for overcharges the only thing I read in my contract that would incur over charges is if I go over allotted minutes for the month. My monthly bill will be 75.00 a month + taxes so I'm paying 35.00 (give or take a few) premium over vm which does stinks but like we've discussed, it's all about how the service is in your area.

reading through the optimus forum it seems vm still has some work to do to get the overall 3g data service to be more reliable and really hope they can because it'll ultimately be good for the consumer.

cheers.

Yeah but what are the taxes? My brother says his is another $15.

VM charges me sales tax on my $25 month plan (because I have live in the greediest state in the union... damn politicians!) but that's just another $1.25. My MiFi plan has no taxes.

I am so leery of the big carriers because of those hidden and extra fees.

that's probably about the average but the taxes have nothing to do with the cellular provider. that's on the government (on the local, state and federal level).

I'm def. not denying that I'm one of those chumps that pays it because that's what it costs.

My question is what fees are being assessed. Sales tax is a known quantity. It's those other universal subscriber fees and other bogus taxes the government puts on the bill I don't like. I gave up my landline years ago because I was paying more in government fees than for the actual service.

Maybe when you get your first bill you can come back here and give a breakdown of your charges.

the optimus V was my first smartphone too. I really do praise VM for releasing such a great smartphone at the price they did. I'm sure their biggest issue is the data they're allocated on sprints network as well as the priority vm users get to is, esp. during peak hours, especially in areas like mine where the signal isn't the best to begin with.

as for ios vs. android both have their strengths and weaknesses. androids seem to be more customizable and there's a larger selection of free apps from the android market vs. the higher end apps. for ios. Netflix and tosh.0 apps are the best for a slow day at work. Nothing beats being able to watch the trailer park boys during my lunch break.

both IMO are great operating systems for a smart phone and you really can't go wrong with either.

oh how I dream of the day when we can just pay a fair price for whatever phone we want and get a fair price for the service without a contract... haven't we been having this prayer for like 15 years now?

haha, yeah so you can all call laugh and snicker at me while I weep in the corner curled up in a fetal position screaming "whyyyy verizon, whyyyyyy" :P

and I got what you were talking about. I was just clumping those "fees" into taxes.
